Revolutionizing Future Connectivity: A Contemporary Survey on AI-empowered Satellite-based Non-Terrestrial Networks in 6G
Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) are expected to be a critical component of 6th
Generation (6G) networks, providing ubiquitous, continuous, and scalable
services. Satellites emerge as the primary enabler for NTN, leveraging their
extensive coverage, stable orbits, scalability, and adherence to international
regulations. However, satellite-based NTN presents unique challenges, including
long propagation delay, high Doppler shift, frequent handovers, spectrum
sharing complexities, and intricate beam and resource allocation, among others.
The integration of NTNs into existing terrestrial networks in 6G introduces a
range of novel challenges, including task offloading, network routing, network
slicing, and many more. To tackle all these obstacles, this paper proposes
Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a promising solution, harnessing its ability to
capture intricate correlations among diverse network parameters. We begin by
providing a comprehensive background on NTN and AI, highlighting the potential
of AI techniques in addressing various NTN challenges. Next, we present an
overview of existing works, emphasizing AI as an enabling tool for
satellite-based NTN, and explore potential research directions. Furthermore, we
discuss ongoing research efforts that aim to enable AI in satellite-based NTN
through software-defined implementations, while also discussing the associated
challenges. Finally, we conclude by providing insights and recommendations for
enabling AI-driven satellite-based NTN in future 6G networks.Comment: 40 pages, 19 Figure, 10 Tables, Surve
Architectures and synchronization techniques for distributed satellite systems: a survey
Cohesive Distributed Satellite Systems (CDSSs) is a key enabling technology for the future of remote sensing and communication missions. However, they have to meet strict synchronization requirements before their use is generalized. When clock or local oscillator signals are generated locally at each of the distributed nodes, achieving exact synchronization in absolute phase, frequency, and time is a complex problem. In addition, satellite systems have significant resource constraints, especially for small satellites, which are envisioned to be part of the future CDSSs. Thus, the development of precise, robust, and resource-efficient synchronization techniques is essential for the advancement of future CDSSs. In this context, this survey aims to summarize and categorize the most relevant results on synchronization techniques for Distributed Satellite Systems (DSSs). First, some important architecture and system concepts are defined. Then, the synchronization methods reported in the literature are reviewed and categorized. This article also provides an extensive list of applications and examples of synchronization techniques for DSSs in addition to the most significant advances in other operations closely related to synchronization, such as inter-satellite ranging and relative position. The survey also provides a discussion on emerging data-driven synchronization techniques based on Machine Learning (ML). Finally, a compilation of current research activities and potential research topics is proposed, identifying problems and open challenges that can be useful for researchers in the field. This work was supported by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), through the CORE Project COHEsive SATellite (COHESAT): Cognitive Cohesive Networks of Distributed Units for Active and Passive Space Applications, under Grant FNR11689919.Award-winningPostprint (published version

Failure Analysis in Next-Generation Critical Cellular Communication Infrastructures
The advent of communication technologies marks a transformative phase in
critical infrastructure construction, where the meticulous analysis of failures
becomes paramount in achieving the fundamental objectives of continuity,
security, and availability. This survey enriches the discourse on failures,
failure analysis, and countermeasures in the context of the next-generation
critical communication infrastructures. Through an exhaustive examination of
existing literature, we discern and categorize prominent research orientations
with focuses on, namely resource depletion, security vulnerabilities, and
system availability concerns. We also analyze constructive countermeasures
tailored to address identified failure scenarios and their prevention.
Furthermore, the survey emphasizes the imperative for standardization in
addressing failures related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the ambit of
the sixth-generation (6G) networks, accounting for the forward-looking
perspective for the envisioned intelligence of 6G network architecture. By
identifying new challenges and delineating future research directions, this
survey can help guide stakeholders toward unexplored territories, fostering
innovation and resilience in critical communication infrastructure development
and failure prevention
Location-Enabled IoT (LE-IoT): A Survey of Positioning Techniques, Error Sources, and Mitigation
The Internet of Things (IoT) has started to empower the future of many
industrial and mass-market applications. Localization techniques are becoming
key to add location context to IoT data without human perception and
intervention. Meanwhile, the newly-emerged Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN)
technologies have advantages such as long-range, low power consumption, low
cost, massive connections, and the capability for communication in both indoor
and outdoor areas. These features make LPWAN signals strong candidates for
mass-market localization applications. However, there are various error sources
that have limited localization performance by using such IoT signals. This
paper reviews the IoT localization system through the following sequence: IoT
localization system review -- localization data sources -- localization
algorithms -- localization error sources and mitigation -- localization
performance evaluation. Compared to the related surveys, this paper has a more
comprehensive and state-of-the-art review on IoT localization methods, an
original review on IoT localization error sources and mitigation, an original
review on IoT localization performance evaluation, and a more comprehensive
review of IoT localization applications, opportunities, and challenges. Thus,
this survey provides comprehensive guidance for peers who are interested in
enabling localization ability in the existing IoT systems, using IoT systems
for localization, or integrating IoT signals with the existing localization

Exploring the Synergy: A Review of Dual-Functional Radar Communication Systems
This review paper examines the concept and advancements in the evolving
landscape of Dual-functional Radar Communication (DFRC) systems. Traditionally,
radar and communication systems have functioned independently, but current
research is actively investigating the integration of these functionalities
into a unified platform. This paper discusses the motivations behind the
development of DFRC systems, the challenges involved, and the potential
benefits they offer. A discussion on the performance bounds for DFRC systems is
also presented. The paper encompasses a comprehensive analysis of various
techniques, architectures, and technologies used in the design and optimization
of DFRC systems, along with their performance and trade-offs. Additionally, we
explore potential application scenarios for these joint communication and
sensing systems, offering a comprehensive perspective on the multifaceted
landscape of DFRC technology.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
