    Co-creating “smart” sustainable food futures with urban food growers

    The futuristic visions, infrastructures, and developments of smart cities continue to gather pace, with municipal authorities and businesses in the UK investing increasing amounts of resources into their manifestation. At the same time local communities continue to be hard hit by austerity, with more local services being affected by government cuts, with the North-East of England being particularly affected. In this paper we report on a case study that aimed to explore how the top-down, technocentric, and corporate visions of smart cities stand in contrast to the reality of grassroots communities who are dealing with the consequences of austerity. Our case study focuses on a community of urban food growers. We describe our speculative and participatory approach that we devised for co-designing “smart” urban food-growing futures from the bottom-up with local residents in a deprived neighbourhood of Newcastle upon Tyne, and reflect on how they elicited realities and future visions that stand as a counterpoint to the corporate visions of future cities

    Hungry 24/7? HCI Design for Sustainable Food Culture: Proceedings of the Workshop held in conjunction with OZCHI 2009

    This workshop proposes to explore new approaches to cultivate and support sustainable food culture in urban environments via human computer interaction design and ubiquitous technologies. Food is a challenging issue in urban contexts: while food consumption decisions are made many times a day, most food interaction for urbanites occurs based on convenience and habitual practices. This situation is contrasting to the fact that food is at the centre of global environment, health, and social issues that are becoming increasingly immanent and imminent. As such, it is timely and crucial to ask: what are feasible, effective, and innovative ways to improve human-food-interaction through human-computer-interaction in order to contribute to environmental, health, and social sustainability in urban environments? This workshop brings together insights across disciplines to discuss this question, and plan and promote individual, local, and global change for sustainable food culture

    Making Sustainability Fashionable: Understanding Fashion-Making in Technology-Mediated Social Participation

    Recently, the notion of fashion has been embraced and considered a useful paradigm of thinking to address challenges in HCI and sustainability. One of the suggested ways to learn from fashion is to make sustainability fashionable in order to increase uptake, interactivity, and proliferation of sustainability initiatives. This paper reports an exploratory study on the use of fashion-inspired ideas around the use of interactive technologies as a strategy to augment social participation in sustainability. Through an interpretive case study of an urban agriculture community in Indonesia, the paper illuminates the potential of using fashion thinking as a lens to examine techno-cultural aspects of human behavior. Implications of the study findings on the design, evaluation, and implementation of interactive systems in organizational and cultural contexts are also discussed

    Hitting the triple bottom line: widening the HCI approach to sustainability

    Sustainable Development (SD) in its dimensions – environment, economy, and society – is a growing area of concern within the HCI community. This paper advances a systematic literature review on sustainability across the Sustainable Human-Computer Interaction (SHCI) body of work. The papers were classified according to the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework to understand how the pillars of SD play into the HCI discourse on sustainability. The economic angle was identified as a gap in SHCI literature. To meet the TBL of SD, however, a balance needs to be sought across all ‘lines’. In this paper, we propose that HCI can advance the discussion and the understanding of the economic concepts around sustainability through taking a sociology perspective on the economic angle of the TBL. We sustain this claim by discussing economic concepts and the role that digital can play in redefining the established foundations of our economic system
