A comparison of inventory control policies for a joint manufacturing/Remanufacturing environment with remanufacturing yield loss

We consider a joint manufacturing / remanufacturing environment with remanufacturing yield loss. Demand and return follow independent stationary Poisson processes. Returns can be disposed off upon arrival to the system. Manufacturing and remanufacturing operations performed in the same facility at exponential rates. Yield information becomes available after remanufacturing. Demands that are not directly satisfied are lost. We investigate what inventories to consider when making production and disposal decisions, with the objective of maximizing the long-run average expected profit. Four different policies are compared that base disposal decisions on either the local (returns) inventory or the global inventory, and production decisions on either the local (serviceable) inventory or the global inventory. By modelling the system as a Markov process, expressions for the profit associated with each policy are derived. An extensive numerical study shows that it is always optimal to base disposal decisions on the local inventory and production decisions on the global inventory within the parameter sets considered. Coordinating forward and reverse flows of products for a manufacturer-retailer supply chain model

In this paper, we formulate and analyze a manufacturer-retailer supply chain model with product remanufacturing. This model takes into account both forward flow of the new product as well as reverse flow of the used product. Specifically, we assume that the manufacturer can control the wholesale price of the new product as well the transfer price of the used product from the retailer while the retailer can control the retail price of the new product and the collecting price of the used product. Under this assumption, we compare and contrast the coordinated scenario vs. the uncoordinated scenario. Managerial insights and a numerical example are illustrated

A Total Product System Concept - a case study of the smart (tm) automobile

Increasing demand from consumers plus EU legislation has raised awareness within the automotive production sector of the urgent need to reduce the environmental impacts from the three main stages in vehicle life – car manufacture, car use and end-of life vehicle processing. The paper reviews how the originator and manufacturer of the smart automobile has worked directly with its main system partners to address environmental issues in these three stages while optimizing performance across the parameters of commercial viability. This required the creation of strategic relationships within the supply chain. Overall, this innovative approach is viewed in the context of a total product system. The smart car highlights the following critical areas: use of modularity in product design and production facility layout; emphasis on partner participation from product creation to after-sales; and the use of highly customised build-to-order product system to 'green' the entire supply chain. In particular, the case study compares the process characteristics empoyed at the smart car factory, called 'smartville', with more traditional approaches to vehicle manufacture. It exmaines these issues in a preliminary attempt to establish the actual or potential reduction of environmental impact in the three stages of vehicle life, including the role of main suppliers in this process

Reverse logistics in the editorial sector: An exploratory study

Nowadays, the Reverse Logistics field is becoming very important. On one hand, laws are imposing companies to be responsible for the contamination made by their products. On the other hand, companies have discovered the profits derived from a good Reverse Logistics process. This paper is the result of the work done by a group of companies from the Spanish Editorial sector to understand and improve their Reverse Logistics process.
