Multiple Access Techniques for Next Generation Wireless: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives
The advances in multiple access techniques has been one of the key drivers in moving from one cellular generation to another. Starting from the first generation, several multiple access techniques have been explored in different generations and various emerging multiplexing/multiple access techniques are being investigated for the next generation of cellular networks. In this context, this paper first provides a detailed review on the existing Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) related works. Subsequently, it highlights the main features and the drawbacks of various existing and emerging multiplexing/multiple access techniques. Finally, we propose a novel concept of clustered orthogonal signature division multiple access for the next generation of cellular networks. The proposed concept envisions to employ joint antenna coding in order to enhance the orthogonality of SDMA beams with the objective of enhancing the spectral efficiency of future cellular networks
Cognitive Orthogonal Precoder for Two-tiered Networks Deployment
In this work, the problem of cross-tier interference in a two-tiered
(macro-cell and cognitive small-cells) network, under the complete spectrum
sharing paradigm, is studied. A new orthogonal precoder transmit scheme for the
small base stations, called multi-user Vandermonde-subspace frequency division
multiplexing (MU-VFDM), is proposed. MU-VFDM allows several cognitive small
base stations to coexist with legacy macro-cell receivers, by nulling the
small- to macro-cell cross-tier interference, without any cooperation between
the two tiers. This cleverly designed cascaded precoder structure, not only
cancels the cross-tier interference, but avoids the co-tier interference for
the small-cell network. The achievable sum-rate of the small-cell network,
satisfying the interference cancelation requirements, is evaluated for perfect
and imperfect channel state information at the transmitter. Simulation results
for the cascaded MU-VFDM precoder show a comparable performance to that of
state-of-the-art dirty paper coding technique, for the case of a dense cellular
layout. Finally, a comparison between MU-VFDM and a standard complete spectrum
separation strategy is proposed. Promising gains in terms of achievable
sum-rate are shown for the two-tiered network w.r.t. the traditional bandwidth
management approach.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted and to appear in IEEE Journal on

Review on Radio Resource Allocation Optimization in LTE/LTE-Advanced using Game Theory
Recently, there has been a growing trend toward ap-plying game theory (GT) to various engineering fields in order to solve optimization problems with different competing entities/con-tributors/players. Researches in the fourth generation (4G) wireless network field also exploited this advanced theory to overcome long term evolution (LTE) challenges such as resource allocation, which is one of the most important research topics. In fact, an efficient de-sign of resource allocation schemes is the key to higher performance. However, the standard does not specify the optimization approach to execute the radio resource management and therefore it was left open for studies. This paper presents a survey of the existing game theory based solution for 4G-LTE radio resource allocation problem and its optimization
Advanced Radio Resource Management for Multi Antenna Packet Radio Systems
In this paper, we propose fairness-oriented packet scheduling (PS) schemes
with power-efficient control mechanism for future packet radio systems. In
general, the radio resource management functionality plays an important role in
new OFDMA based networks. The control of the network resource division among
the users is performed by packet scheduling functionality based on maximizing
cell coverage and capacity satisfying, and certain quality of service
requirements. Moreover, multiantenna transmit-receive schemes provide
additional flexibility to packet scheduler functionality. In order to mitigate
inter-cell and co-channel interference problems in OFDMA cellular networks soft
frequency reuse with different power masks patterns is used. Stemming from the
earlier enhanced proportional fair scheduler studies for single-input
multiple-output (SIMO) and multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) systems, we
extend the development of efficient packet scheduling algorithms by adding
transmit power considerations in the overall priority metrics calculations and
scheduling decisions. Furthermore, we evaluate the proposed scheduling schemes
by simulating practical orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)
based packet radio system in terms of throughput, coverage and fairness
distribution among users. As a concrete example, under reduced overall transmit
power constraint and unequal power distribution for different sub-bands, we
demonstrate that by using the proposed power-aware multi-user scheduling
schemes, significant coverage and fairness improvements in the order of 70% and
20%, respectively, can be obtained, at the expense of average throughput loss
of only 15%.Comment: 14 Pages, IJWM

LTE-Advanced radio access enhancements: A survey
Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-Advanced) is the next step in LTE evolution and allows operators to improve network performance and service capabilities through smooth deployment of new techniques and technologies. LTE-Advanced uses some new features on top of the existing LTE standards to provide better user experience and higher throughputs. Some of the most significant features introduced in LTE-Advanced are carrier aggregation, enhancements in heterogeneous networks, coordinated multipoint transmission and reception, enhanced multiple input multiple output usage and deployment of relay nodes in the radio network. Mentioned features are mainly aimed to enhance the radio access part of the cellular networks. This survey article presents an overview of the key radio access features and functionalities of the LTE-Advanced radio access network, supported by the simulation results. We also provide a detailed review of the literature together with a very rich list of the references for each of the features. An LTE-Advanced roadmap and the latest updates and trends in LTE markets are also presented
Spectral-energy efficiency trade-off for next-generation wireless communication systems
The data traffic in cellular networks has had and will experience a rapid exponential
rise. Therefore, it is essential to innovate a new cellular architecture with
advanced wireless technologies that can offer more capacity and enhanced spectral
efficiency to manage the exponential data traffic growth. Managing such mass
data traffic, however, brings up another challenge of increasing energy consumption.
This is because it contributes into a growing fraction of the carbon dioxide
(CO2) emission which is a global concern today due to its negative impact on
the environment. This has resulted in creating a new paradigm shift towards both
spectral and energy efficient orientated design for the next-generation wireless access
networks. Acquiring both improved energy efficiency and spectral efficiency
has, nonetheless, shown to be a difficult goal to achieve as it seems improving one
is at the detriment to the other. Therefore, the trade-off between the spectral and
energy efficiency is of paramount importance to assess the energy consumption in
a wireless communication system required to attain a specific spectral efficiency.
This thesis looks into this problem. It studies the spectral-energy efficiency tradeoff
for some of the emerging wireless communication technologies which are seen
as potential candidates for the fifth generation (5G) mobile cellular system. The
focus is on the orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), mobile
femtocell (MFemtocell), cognitive radio (CR), and the spatial modulation (SM).
Firstly, the energy-efficient resource allocation scheme for multi-user OFDMA
(MU-OFDMA) system is studied. The spectral-energy efficiency trade-off is
analysed under the constraint of maintaining the fairness among users. The
energy-efficient optimisation problem has been formulated as integer fractional
programming. We then apply an iterative method to simplify the problem to an
integer linear programming (ILP) problem.
Secondly, the spectral and energy efficiency for a cellular system with MFemtocell
deployment is investigated using different resource partitioning schemes.
Femtocells are low range, low power base stations (BSs) that improve the coverage
inside a home or office building. MFemtocell adopts the femtocell solution to be deployed in public transport and emergency vehicles. Closed-form expressions
for the relationships between the spectral and energy efficiency are derived for
a single-user (SU) MFemtocell network. We also study the spectral efficiency
for MU-MFemtocells with two opportunistic scheduling schemes.
Thirdly, the spectral-energy efficiency trade-off for CR networks is analysed at
both SU and MU CR systems against varying signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values.
CR is an innovative radio device that aims to utilise the spectrum more efficiently
by opportunistically exploiting underutilised licensed spectrum. For the SU system,
we study the required energy to achieve a specific spectral efficiency for a
CR channel under two different types of power constraints in different fading environments.
In this scenario, interference constraint at the primary receiver (PR)
is also considered to protect the PR from harmful interference. At the system
level, we study the spectral and energy efficiency for a CR network that shares
the spectrum with an indoor network. Adopting the extreme-value theory, we
are able to derive the average spectral efficiency of the CR network.
Finally, we propose two innovative schemes to enhance the capability of (SM). SM
is a recently developed technique that is employed for a low complexity multipleinput
multiple-output (MIMO) transmission. The first scheme can be applied for
SU MIMO (SU-MIMO) to offer more degrees of freedom than SM. Whereas the
second scheme introduces a transmission structure by which the SM is adopted
into a downlink MU-MIMO system. Unlike SM, both proposed schemes do not
involve any restriction into the number of transmit antennas when transmitting
signals. The spectral-energy efficiency trade-off for the MU-SM in the massive
MIMO system is studied. In this context, we develop an iterative energy-efficient
water-filling algorithm to optimises the transmit power and achieve the maximum
energy efficiency for a given spectral efficiency.
In summary, the research presented in this thesis reveals mathematical tools to
analysis the spectral and energy efficiency for wireless communications technologies.
It also offers insight to solve optimisation problems that belong to a class
of problems with objectives of enhancing the energy efficiency
