    Efficient learning of robust quadruped bounding using pretrained neural networks

    Bounding is one of the important gaits in quadrupedal locomotion for negotiating obstacles. The authors proposed an effective approach that can learn robust bounding gaits more efficiently despite its large variation in dynamic body movements. The authors first pretrained the neural network (NN) based on data from a robot operated by conventional model-based controllers, and then further optimised the pretrained NN via deep reinforcement learning (DRL). In particular, the authors designed a reward function considering contact points and phases to enforce the gait symmetry and periodicity, which improved the bounding performance. The NN-based feedback controller was learned in the simulation and directly deployed on the real quadruped robot Jueying Mini successfully. A variety of environments are presented both indoors and outdoors with the authors’ approach. The authors’ approach shows efficient computing and good locomotion results by the Jueying Mini quadrupedal robot bounding over uneven terrain

    A Comprehensive Introduction of Visual-Inertial Navigation

    In this article, a tutorial introduction to visual-inertial navigation(VIN) is presented. Visual and inertial perception are two complementary sensing modalities. Cameras and inertial measurement units (IMU) are the corresponding sensors for these two modalities. The low cost and light weight of camera-IMU sensor combinations make them ubiquitous in robotic navigation. Visual-inertial Navigation is a state estimation problem, that estimates the ego-motion and local environment of the sensor platform. This paper presents visual-inertial navigation in the classical state estimation framework, first illustrating the estimation problem in terms of state variables and system models, including related quantities representations (Parameterizations), IMU dynamic and camera measurement models, and corresponding general probabilistic graphical models (Factor Graph). Secondly, we investigate the existing model-based estimation methodologies, these involve filter-based and optimization-based frameworks and related on-manifold operations. We also discuss the calibration of some relevant parameters, also initialization of state of interest in optimization-based frameworks. Then the evaluation and improvement of VIN in terms of accuracy, efficiency, and robustness are discussed. Finally, we briefly mention the recent development of learning-based methods that may become alternatives to traditional model-based methods.Comment: 35 pages, 10 figure

    Robust and efficient robotic mapping

Locally accurate maps are critical to collision avoidance, while large-scale maps (accurate both metrically and topologically) are necessary for efficient route planning. Solutions to these problems have immediate and important applications to autonomous vehicles, precision surveying, and domestic robots. Building accurate maps can be cast as an optimization problem: find the map that is most probable given the set of observations of the environment. However, the problem rapidly becomes difficult when dealing with large maps or large numbers of observations. Sensor noise and non-linearities make the problem even more difficult especially when using inexpensive (and therefore preferable) sensors. This thesis describes an optimization algorithm that can rapidly estimate the maximum likelihood map given a set of observations. The algorithm, which iteratively reduces map error by considering a single observation at a time, scales well to large environments with many observations. The approach is particularly robust to noise and non-linearities, quickly escaping local minima that trap current methods. Both batch and online versions of the algorithm are described. In order to build a map, however, a robot must first be able to recognize places that it has previously seen. Limitations in sensor processing algorithms, coupled with environmental ambiguity, make this difficult. Incorrect place recognitions can rapidly lead to divergence of the map. This thesis describes a place recognition algorithm that can robustly handle ambiguous data. We evaluate these algorithms on a number of challenging datasets and provide quantitative comparisons to other state-of-the-art methods, illustrating the advantages of our methods.by Edwin B.     Bio-Inspired Robotics

    Modern robotic technologies have enabled robots to operate in a variety of unstructured and dynamically-changing environments, in addition to traditional structured environments. Robots have, thus, become an important element in our everyday lives. One key approach to develop such intelligent and autonomous robots is to draw inspiration from biological systems. Biological structure, mechanisms, and underlying principles have the potential to provide new ideas to support the improvement of conventional robotic designs and control. Such biological principles usually originate from animal or even plant models, for robots, which can sense, think, walk, swim, crawl, jump or even fly. Thus, it is believed that these bio-inspired methods are becoming increasingly important in the face of complex applications. Bio-inspired robotics is leading to the study of innovative structures and computing with sensory–motor coordination and learning to achieve intelligence, flexibility, stability, and adaptation for emergent robotic applications, such as manipulation, learning, and control. This Special Issue invites original papers of innovative ideas and concepts, new discoveries and improvements, and novel applications and business models relevant to the selected topics of ``Bio-Inspired Robotics''. Bio-Inspired Robotics is a broad topic and an ongoing expanding field. This Special Issue collates 30 papers that address some of the important challenges and opportunities in this broad and expanding field

    Experience-driven optimal motion synthesis in complex and shared environments

    Optimal loco-manipulation planning and control for high-dimensional systems based on general, non-linear optimisation allows for the specification of versatile motion subject to complex constraints. However, complex, non-linear system and environment dynamics, switching contacts, and collision avoidance in cluttered environments introduce non-convexity and discontinuity in the optimisation space. This renders finding optimal solutions in complex and changing environments an open and challenging problem in robotics. Global optimisation methods can take a prohibitively long time to converge. Slow convergence makes them unsuitable for live deployment and online re-planning of motion policies in response to changes in the task or environment. Local optimisation techniques, in contrast, converge fast within the basin of attraction of a minimum but may not converge at all without a good initial guess as they can easily get stuck in local minima. Local methods are, therefore, a suitable choice provided we can supply a good initial guess. If a similarity between problems can be found and exploited, a memory of optimal solutions can be computed and compressed efficiently in an offline computation process. During runtime, we can query this memory to bootstrap motion synthesis by providing a good initial seed to the local optimisation solver. In order to realise such a system, we need to address several connected problems and questions: First, the formulation of the optimisation problem (and its parametrisation to allow solutions to transfer to new scenarios), and related, the type and granularity of user input, along with a strategy for recovery and feedback in case of unexpected changes or failure. Second, a sampling strategy during the database/memory generation that explores the parameter space efficiently without resorting to exhaustive measures---i.e., to balance storage size/memory with online runtime to adapt/repair the initial guess. Third, the question of how to represent the problem and environment to parametrise, compute, store, retrieve, and exploit the memory efficiently during pre-computation and runtime. One strategy to make the problem computationally tractable is to decompose planning into a series of sequential sub-problems, e.g., contact-before-motion approaches which sequentially perform goal state planning, contact planning, motion planning, and encoding. Here, subsequent stages operate within the null-space of the constraints of the prior problem, such as the contact mode or sequence. This doctoral thesis follows this line of work. It investigates general optimisation-based formulations for motion synthesis along with a strategy for exploration, encoding, and exploitation of a versatile memory-of-motion for providing an initial guess to optimisation solvers. In particular, we focus on manipulation in complex environments with high-dimensional robot systems such as humanoids and mobile manipulators. The first part of this thesis focuses on collision-free motion generation to reliably generate motions. We present a general, collision-free inverse kinematics method using a combination of gradient-based local optimisation with random/evolution strategy restarting to achieve high success rates and avoid local minima. We use formulations for discrete collision avoidance and introduce a novel, computationally fast continuous collision avoidance objective based on conservative advancement and harmonic potential fields. Using this, we can synthesise continuous-time collision-free motion plans in the presence of moving obstacles. It further enables to discretise trajectories with fewer waypoints, which in turn considerably reduces the optimisation problem complexity, and thus, time to solve. The second part focuses on problem representations and exploration. We first introduce an efficient solution encoding for trajectory library-based approaches. This representation, paired with an accompanying exploration strategy for offline pre-computation, permits the application of inexpensive distance metrics during runtime. We demonstrate how our method efficiently re-uses trajectory samples, increases planning success rates, and reduces planning time while being highly memory-efficient. We subsequently present a method to explore the topological features of the solution space using tools from computational homology. This enables us to cluster solutions according to their inherent structure which increases the success of warm-starting for problems with discontinuities and multi-modality. The third part focuses on real-world deployment in laboratory and field experiments as well as incorporating user input. We present a framework for robust shared autonomy with a focus on continuous scene monitoring for assured safety. This framework further supports interactive adjustment of autonomy levels from fully teleoperated to automatic execution of stored behaviour sequences. Finally, we present sensing and control for the integration and embodiment of the presented methodology in high-dimensional real-world platforms used in laboratory experiments and real-world deployment. We validate our presented methods using hardware experiments on a variety of robot platforms demonstrating generalisation to other robots and environments

    Hybrid approaches for mobile robot navigation

    The work described in this thesis contributes to the efficient solution of mobile robot navigation problems. A series of new evolutionary approaches is presented. Two novel evolutionary planners have been developed that reduce the computational overhead in generating plans of mobile robot movements. In comparison with the best-performing evolutionary scheme reported in the literature, the first of the planners significantly reduces the plan calculation time in static environments. The second planner was able to generate avoidance strategies in response to unexpected events arising from the presence of moving obstacles. To overcome limitations in responsiveness and the unrealistic assumptions regarding a priori knowledge that are inherent in planner-based and a vigation systems, subsequent work concentrated on hybrid approaches. These included a reactive component to identify rapidly and autonomously environmental features that were represented by a small number of critical waypoints. Not only is memory usage dramatically reduced by such a simplified representation, but also the calculation time to determine new plans is significantly reduced. Further significant enhancements of this work were firstly, dynamic avoidance to limit the likelihood of potential collisions with moving obstacles and secondly, exploration to identify statistically the dynamic characteristics of the environment. Finally, by retaining more extensive environmental knowledge gained during previous navigation activities, the capability of the hybrid navigation system was enhanced to allow planning to be performed for any start point and goal point
