Robust measurement-based buffer overflow probability estimators for QoS provisioning and traffic anomaly prediction applicationm

Suitable estimators for a class of Large Deviation approximations of rare event probabilities based on sample realizations of random processes have been proposed in our earlier work. These estimators are expressed as non-linear multi-dimensional optimization problems of a special structure. In this paper, we develop an algorithm to solve these optimization problems very efficiently based on their characteristic structure. After discussing the nature of the objective function and constraint set and their peculiarities, we provide a formal proof that the developed algorithm is guaranteed to always converge. The existence of efficient and provably convergent algorithms for solving these problems is a prerequisite for using the proposed estimators in real time problems such as call admission control, adaptive modulation and coding with QoS constraints, and traffic anomaly detection in high data rate communication networks

Detecting abnormal events on binary sensors in smart home environments

With a rising ageing population, smart home technologies have been demonstrated as a promising paradigm to enable technology-driven healthcare delivery. Smart home technologies, composed of advanced sensing, computing, and communication technologies, offer an unprecedented opportunity to keep track of behaviours and activities of the elderly and provide context-aware services that enable the elderly to remain active and independent in their own homes. However, experiments in developed prototypes demonstrate that abnormal sensor events hamper the correct identification of critical (and potentially life-threatening) situations, and that existing learning, estimation, and time-based approaches to situation recognition are inaccurate and inflexible when applied to multiple people sharing a living space. We propose a novel technique, called CLEAN, that integrates the semantics of sensor readings with statistical outlier detection. We evaluate the technique against four real-world datasets across different environments including the datasets with multiple residents. The results have shown that CLEAN can successfully detect sensor anomaly and improve activity recognition accuracies.PostprintPeer reviewe

An Anomaly Detection Algorithm of Cloud Platform Based on Self-Organizing Maps

    Get PDF
Virtual machines (VM) on a Cloud platform can be influenced by a variety of factors which can lead to decreased performance and downtime, affecting the reliability of the Cloud platform. Traditional anomaly detection algorithms and strategies for Cloud platforms have some flaws in their accuracy of detection, detection speed, and adaptability. In this paper, a dynamic and adaptive anomaly detection algorithm based on Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) for virtual machines is proposed. A unified modeling method based on SOM to detect the machine performance within the detection region is presented, which avoids the cost of modeling a single virtual machine and enhances the detection speed and reliability of large-scale virtual machines in Cloud platform. The important parameters that affect the modeling speed are optimized in the SOM process to significantly improve the accuracy of the SOM modeling and therefore the anomaly detection accuracy of the virtual machine
