    State of the art on methodologies for the development of a metadata application profile

    This article presents the state of the art on methodologies for the development of a metadata application profile. For this purpose we have performed searches in scientific on-line databases and made other efforts such as global searches on the Web and calls on the mailing lists of the metadata communities to find articles and Web pages about metadata application profiles development and metadata best practices or methodologies. These searches produced 21 items of which 9 have information on how the metadata application profiles were developed. As a result of this analysis we have found small formulas or private recipes for very particular phases of the process, but none is described in detail. We have also found guidelines that were too global and not sufficiently detailed for the metadata application profile development.     POSTDATA – Towards publishing European poetry as linked open data

    POSTDATA is a 5 year's European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant Project that started in May 2016 and is hosted by the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), Madrid, Spain. The context of the project is the corpora of European Poetry (EP), with a special focus on poetic materials from different languages and literary traditions. POSTDATA aims to offer a standardized model in the philological field and a metadata application profile (MAP) for EP in order to build a common classification of all these poetic materials. The information of Spanish, Italian and French repertoires will be published in the Linked Open Data (LOD) ecosystem. Later we expect to extend the model to include additional corpora. There are a number of Web Based Information Systems in Europe with repertoires of poems available to human consumption but not in an appropriate condition to be accessible and reusable by the Semantic Web. These systems are not interoperable; they are in fact locked in their databases and proprietary software, not suitable to be linked in the Semantic Web. A way to make this data interoperable is to develop a MAP in order to be able to publish this data available in the LOD ecosystem, and also to publish new data that will be created and modeled based on this MAP. To create a common data model for EP is not simple since the existent data models are based on conceptualizations and terminology belonging to their own poetical traditions and each tradition has developed an idiosyncratic analytical terminology in a different and independent way for years. The result of this uncoordinated evolution is a set of varied terminologies to explain analogous metrical phenomena through the different poetic systems whose correspondences have been hardly studied – see examples in González-Blanco & Rodríguez (2014a and b). This work has to be done by domain experts before the modeling actually starts. On the other hand, the development of a MAP is a complex task though it is imperative to follow a method for this development. The last years Curado Malta & Baptista (2012, 2013a, 2013b) have been studying the development of MAP's in a Design Science Research (DSR) methodological process in order to define a method for the development of MAPs (see Curado Malta (2014)). The output of this DSR process was a first version of a method for the development of Metadata Application Profiles (Me4MAP) (paper to be published). The DSR process is now in the validation phase of the Relevance Cycle to validate Me4MAP. The development of this MAP for poetry will follow the guidelines of Me4MAP and this development will be used to do the validation of Me4MAP. The final goal of the POSTDATA project is: i) to be able to publish all the data locked in the WIS, in LOD, where any agent interested will be able to build applications over the data in order to serve final users; ii) to build a Web platform where: a) researchers, students and other final users interested in EP will be able to access poems (and their analyses) of all databases; b) researchers, students and other final users will be able to upload poems, the digitalized images of manuscripts, and fill in the information concerning the analysis of the poem, collaboratively contributing to a LOD dataset of poetry.Starting Grant research project: Poetry Standardization and Linked Open Data: POSTDATA (ERC-2015-STG-679528), funded by European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon2020 research and innovation programme

    A method for the development of Dublin Core Application Profiles (Me4DCAP V0.2): detailed description

    Our research in progress project aims the design of a method for the development of Dublin Core Application Profiles (Me4DCAP). This paper describes Me4DCAP V0.2, an early version of a method for the development of DCAP. The development of Me4DCAP was based on a Design Science Research methodological approach and has as starting points the Singapore framework for DCAP and the Rational Unified Process; integrates knowledge from: (i) the practices of the metadata community concerning DCAP development, and (ii) software development processes and techniques, focusing on the early stages of the processes that deal with data modeling. Me4DCAP establishes a way for the development of a DCAP.     The development process of a metadata application profile for the social and solidarity economy

This chapter presents the process of developing a Metadata Application Profile for the Social and Solidarity Economy (DCAP-SSE) using Me4MAP, a method for developing Application Profiles that was being put forth by the authors. The DCAPSSE and Me4MAP were developed iteratively, feeding new developments into each other. This paper presents how the DCAP-SSE was developed showing the steps followed through the development of the activities and the techniques used, and the final deliverables obtained at the end of each activity. It also presents the work-team and how each profile of the team contributed for the DCAP-SSE development process. The DCAP-SSE has been endorsed by the SSE community and new perspectives of SSE activities have been defined for future enlargement of the DCAP-SSE.     A panoramic view on metadata application profiles of the last decade

    This paper describes a study developed with the goal to understand the panorama of the metadata Application Profiles (AP): (i) what AP have been developed so far; (ii) what type of institutions have developed these AP; (iii) what are the application domains of these AP; (iv) what are the Metadata Schemes (MS) used by these AP; (v) what application domains have been producing MS; (vi) what are the Syntax Encoding Schemes (SES) and the Vocabulary Encoding Schemes (VES) used by these AP; and finally (vii) if these AP have followed the Singapore Framework (SF). We found (i) 74 AP; (ii) the AP are mostly developed by the scientific community, (iii) the ‘Learning Objects’ domain is the most intensive producer; (iv) Dublin Core metadata vocabularies are the most used and are being used in all domains of application and IEEE LOM is the second most used but only inside the ‘Learning Objects’ application domain; (v) the most intensive producer of MS is the domain of ‘Libraries and Repositories’; (vi) 13 distinct SES and 90 distinct VES were used; (vi) five of the 74 AP found follow the SF.This work is sponsored by FEDER funds through the Competitivity Factors Operational Programme (COMPETE) and by National funds through Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) within the scope of the project: FCOMP01-0124-FFEDER-022674.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Towards a metadata standard for field spectroscopy

    This thesis identifies the core components for a field spectroscopy metadata standard to facilitate discoverability, interoperability, reliability, quality assurance and extended life cycles for datasets being exchanged in a variety of data sharing platforms. The research is divided into five parts: 1) an overview of the importance of field spectroscopy, metadata paradigms and standards, metadata quality and geospatial data archiving systems; 2) definition of a core metadataset critical for all field spectroscopy applications; 3) definition of an extended metadataset for specific applications; 4) methods and metrics for assessing metadata quality and completeness in spectral data archives; 5) recommendations for implementing a field spectroscopy metadata standard in data warehouses and ‘big data’ environments. Part 1 of the thesis is a review of the importance of field spectroscopy in remote sensing; metadata paradigms and standards; field spectroscopy metadata practices, metadata quality; and geospatial data archiving systems. The unique metadata requirements for field spectroscopy are discussed. Conventional definitions and metrics for measuring metadata quality are presented. Geospatial data archiving systems for data warehousing and intelligent information exchange are explained. Part 2 of the thesis presents a core metadataset for all field spectroscopy applications, derived from the results of an international expert panel survey. The survey respondents helped to identify a metadataset critical to all field spectroscopy campaigns, and for specific applications. These results form the foundation of a field spectroscopy metadata standard that is practical, flexible enough to suit the purpose for which the data is being collected, and/or has sufficient legacy potential for long-term sharing and interoperability with other datasets. Part 3 presents an extended metadataset for specific application areas within field spectroscopy. The key metadata is presented for three applications: tree crown, soil, and underwater coral reflectance measurements. The performance of existing metadata standards in complying with the field spectroscopy metadataset was measured. Results show they consistently fail to accommodate the needs of both field spectroscopy scientists in general as well as the three application areas. Part 4 presents criteria for measuring the quality and completeness of field spectroscopy metadata in a spectral archive. Existing methods for measuring quality and completeness of metadata were scrutinized against the special requirements of field spectroscopy datasets. Novel field spectroscopy metadata quality parameters were defined. Two spectral libraries were examined as case studies of operationalized metadata. The case studies revealed that publicly available datasets are underperforming on the quality and completeness measures. Part 5 presents recommendations for adoption and implementation of a field spectroscopy standard, both within the field spectroscopy community and within the wider scope of IT infrastructure for storing and sharing field spectroscopy metadata within data warehouses and big data environments. The recommendations are divided into two main sections: community adoption of the standard, and integration of standardized metadatasets into data warehouses and big data platforms. This thesis has identified the core components of a metadata standard for field spectroscopy.
