    Stable Matching for Dynamic Ride-sharing Systems

    Dynamic ride-sharing systems enable people to share rides and increase the efficiency of urban transportation by connecting riders and drivers on short notice. Automated systems that establish ride-share matches with minimal input from participants provide the most convenience and the most potential for system-wide performance improvement, such as reduction in total vehicle-miles traveled. Indeed, such systems may be designed to match riders and drivers to maximize system performance improvement. However, system-optimal matches may not provide the maximum benefit to each individual participant. In this paper we consider a notion of stability for ride-share matches and present several mathematical programming methods to establish stable or nearly-stable matches, where we note that ride-share matching optimization is performed over time with incomplete information. Our numerical experiments using travel demand data for the metropolitan Atlanta region show that we can significantly increase the stability of ride-share matching solutions at the cost of only a small degradation in system-wide performance

    A stochastic user-operator assignment game for microtransit service evaluation: A case study of Kussbus in Luxembourg

    This paper proposes a stochastic variant of the stable matching model from Rasulkhani and Chow [1] which allows microtransit operators to evaluate their operation policy and resource allocations. The proposed model takes into account the stochastic nature of users' travel utility perception, resulting in a probabilistic stable operation cost allocation outcome to design ticket price and ridership forecasting. We applied the model for the operation policy evaluation of a microtransit service in Luxembourg and its border area. The methodology for the model parameters estimation and calibration is developed.     When Hashing Met Matching: Efficient Spatio-Temporal Search for Ridesharing

    Carpooling, or sharing a ride with other passengers, holds immense potential for urban transportation. Ridesharing platforms enable such sharing of rides using real-time data. Finding ride matches in real-time at urban scale is a difficult combinatorial optimization task and mostly heuristic approaches are applied. In this work, we mathematically model the problem as that of finding near-neighbors and devise a novel efficient spatio-temporal search algorithm based on the theory of locality sensitive hashing for Maximum Inner Product Search (MIPS). The proposed algorithm can find kk near-optimal potential matches for every ride from a pool of nn rides in time O(n1+ρ(k+logn)logk)O(n^{1 + \rho} (k + \log n) \log k) and space O(n1+ρlogk)O(n^{1 + \rho} \log k) for a small ρ<1\rho < 1. Our algorithm can be extended in several useful and interesting ways increasing its practical appeal. Experiments with large NY yellow taxi trip datasets show that our algorithm consistently outperforms state-of-the-art heuristic methods thereby proving its practical applicability

    Shared Mobility - Operations and Economics

    In the last decade, ubiquity of the internet and proliferation of smart personal devices have given rise to businesses that are built on the foundation of the sharing economy. The mobility market has implemented the sharing economy model in many forms, including but not limited to, carsharing, ride-sourcing, carpooling, taxi-sharing, ridesharing, bikesharing, and scooter sharing. Among these shared-use mobility services, ridesharing services, such as peer-to-peer (P2P) ridesharing and ride-pooling systems, are based on sharing both the vehicle and the ride between users, offering several individual and societal benefits. Despite these benefits, there are a number of operational and economic challenges that hinder the adoption of various forms of ridesharing services in practice. This dissertation attempts to address these challenges by investigating these systems from two different, but related, perspectives. The successful operation of ridesharing services in practice requires solving large-scale ride-matching problems in short periods of time. However, the high computational complexity and inherent supply and demand uncertainty present in these problems immensely undermines their real-time application. In the first part of this dissertation, we develop techniques that provide high-quality, although not necessarily optimal, system-level solutions that can be applied in real time. More precisely, we propose a distributed optimization technique based on graph partitioning to facilitate the implementation of dynamic P2P ridesharing systems in densely populated metropolitan areas. Additionally, we combine the proposed partitioning algorithm with a new local search algorithm to design a proactive framework that exploits historical demand data to optimize dynamic dispatching of a fleet of vehicles that serve on-demand ride requests. The main purpose of these methods is to maximize the social welfare of the corresponding ridesharing services. Despite the necessity of developing real-time algorithmic tools for operation of ridesharing services, solely maximizing the system-level social welfare cannot result in increasing the penetration of shared mobility services. This fact motivated the second stream of research in this dissertation, which revolves around proposing models that take economic aspects of ridesharing systems into account. To this end, the second part of this dissertation studies the impact of subsidy allocation on achieving and maintaining a critical mass of users in P2P ridesharing systems under different assumptions. First, we consider a community-based ridesharing system with ride-back guarantee, and propose a traveler incentive program that allocates subsidies to a carefully selected set of commuters to change their travel behavior, and thereby, increase the likelihood of finding more compatible and profitable matches. We further introduce an approximate algorithm to solve large-scale instances of this problem efficiently. In a subsequent study for a cooperative ridesharing market with role flexibility, we show that there may be no stable outcome (a collusion-free pricing and allocation scheme). Hence, we introduced a mathematical formulation that yields a stable outcome by allocating the minimum amount of external subsidy. Finally, we propose a truthful subsidy scheme to determine matching, scheduling, and subsidy allocation in a P2P ridesharing market with incomplete information and a budget constraint on payment deficit. The proposed mechanism is shown to guarantee important economic properties such as dominant-strategy incentive compatibility, individual rationality, budget-balance, and computational efficiency.     An investigation into machine learning approaches for forecasting spatio-temporal demand in ride-hailing service

    In this paper, we present machine learning approaches for characterizing and forecasting the short-term demand for on-demand ride-hailing services. We propose the spatio-temporal estimation of the demand that is a function of variable effects related to traffic, pricing and weather conditions. With respect to the methodology, a single decision tree, bootstrap-aggregated (bagged) decision trees, random forest, boosted decision trees, and artificial neural network for regression have been adapted and systematically compared using various statistics, e.g. R-square, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and slope. To better assess the quality of the models, they have been tested on a real case study using the data of DiDi Chuxing, the main on-demand ride hailing service provider in China. In the current study, 199,584 time-slots describing the spatio-temporal ride-hailing demand has been extracted with an aggregated-time interval of 10 mins. All the methods are trained and validated on the basis of two independent samples from this dataset. The results revealed that boosted decision trees provide the best prediction accuracy (RMSE=16.41), while avoiding the risk of over-fitting, followed by artificial neural network (20.09), random forest (23.50), bagged decision trees (24.29) and single decision tree (33.55).Comment: Currently under review for journal publicatio

    Balancing the Tradeoff between Profit and Fairness in Rideshare Platforms During High-Demand Hours

    Rideshare platforms, when assigning requests to drivers, tend to maximize profit for the system and/or minimize waiting time for riders. Such platforms can exacerbate biases that drivers may have over certain types of requests. We consider the case of peak hours when the demand for rides is more than the supply of drivers. Drivers are well aware of their advantage during the peak hours and can choose to be selective about which rides to accept. Moreover, if in such a scenario, the assignment of requests to drivers (by the platform) is made only to maximize profit and/or minimize wait time for riders, requests of a certain type (e.g. from a non-popular pickup location, or to a non-popular drop-off location) might never be assigned to a driver. Such a system can be highly unfair to riders. However, increasing fairness might come at a cost of the overall profit made by the rideshare platform. To balance these conflicting goals, we present a flexible, non-adaptive algorithm, \lpalg, that allows the platform designer to control the profit and fairness of the system via parameters α\alpha and β\beta respectively. We model the matching problem as an online bipartite matching where the set of drivers is offline and requests arrive online. Upon the arrival of a request, we use \lpalg to assign it to a driver (the driver might then choose to accept or reject it) or reject the request. We formalize the measures of profit and fairness in our setting and show that by using \lpalg, the competitive ratios for profit and fairness measures would be no worse than α/e\alpha/e and β/e\beta/e respectively. Extensive experimental results on both real-world and synthetic datasets confirm the validity of our theoretical lower bounds. Additionally, they show that \lpalg under some choice of (α,β)(\alpha, \beta) can beat two natural heuristics, Greedy and Uniform, on \emph{both} fairness and profit

    Decentralized Ride-Sharing and Vehicle-Pooling Based on Fair Cost-Sharing Mechanisms

    Ride-sharing or vehicle-pooling allows commuters to team up spontaneously for transportation cost sharing. This has become a popular trend in the emerging paradigm of sharing economy. One crucial component to support effective ride-sharing is the matching mechanism that pairs up suitable commuters. Traditionally, matching has been performed in a centralized manner, whereby an operator arranges ride-sharing according to a global objective (e.g., total cost of all commuters). However, ride-sharing is a decentralized decision-making paradigm, where commuters are self-interested and only motivated to team up based on individual payments. Particularly, it is not clear how transportation cost should be shared fairly between commuters, and what ramifications of cost-sharing are on decentralized ride-sharing. This paper sheds light on the principles of decentralized ride-sharing and vehicle-pooling mechanisms based on stable matching, such that no one would be better off to deviate from a stable matching outcome. We study various fair cost-sharing mechanisms and the induced stable matching outcomes. We compare the stable matching outcomes with a social optimal outcome (that minimizes total cost) by theoretical bounds of social optimality ratios, and show that several fair cost-sharing mechanisms can achieve high social optimality. We also corroborate our results with an empirical study of taxi sharing under fair cost-sharing mechanisms by a data analysis on New York City taxi trip dataset, and provide useful insights on effective decentralized mechanisms for practical ride-sharing and vehicle-pooling.Comment: To appear in IEEE Trans. on Intelligent Transportation System
