Queensland University of Technology at TREC 2005
The Information Retrieval and Web Intelligence (IR-WI) research group is a research team at the Faculty of Information Technology, QUT, Brisbane, Australia. The IR-WI group participated in the Terabyte and Robust track at TREC 2005, both for the first time. For the Robust track we applied our existing information retrieval system that was originally designed for use with structured (XML) retrieval to the domain of document retrieval. For the Terabyte track we experimented with an open source IR system, Zettair and performed two types of experiments. First, we compared Zettair’s performance on both a high-powered supercomputer and a distributed system across seven midrange personal computers. Second, we compared Zettair’s performance when a standard TREC title is used, compared with a natural language query, and a query expanded with synonyms. We compare the systems both in terms of efficiency and retrieval performance. Our results indicate that the distributed system is faster than the supercomputer, while slightly decreasing retrieval performance, and that natural language queries also slightly decrease retrieval performance, while our query expansion technique significantly decreased performance
Vision systems with the human in the loop
The emerging cognitive vision paradigm deals with vision systems that apply machine learning and automatic reasoning in order to learn from what they perceive. Cognitive vision systems can rate the relevance and consistency of newly acquired knowledge, they can adapt to their environment and thus will exhibit high robustness. This contribution presents vision systems that aim at flexibility and robustness. One is tailored for content-based image retrieval, the others are cognitive vision systems that constitute prototypes of visual active memories which evaluate, gather, and integrate contextual knowledge for visual analysis. All three systems are designed to interact with human users. After we will have discussed adaptive content-based image retrieval and object and action recognition in an office environment, the issue of assessing cognitive systems will be raised. Experiences from psychologically evaluated human-machine interactions will be reported and the promising potential of psychologically-based usability experiments will be stressed
A Database Approach to Content-based XML retrieval
This paper describes a rst prototype system for content-based retrieval from XML data. The system's design supports both XPath queries and complex information retrieval queries based on a language modelling approach to information retrieval. Evaluation using the INEX benchmark shows that it is beneficial if the system is biased to retrieve large XML fragments over small fragments
Dublin City University video track experiments for TREC 2002
Dublin City University participated in the Feature Extraction task and the Search task of the TREC-2002 Video
Track. In the Feature Extraction task, we submitted 3 features: Face, Speech, and Music. In the Search task, we
developed an interactive video retrieval system, which incorporated the 40 hours of the video search test collection and supported user searching using our own feature extraction data along with the donated feature data and ASR transcript from other Video Track groups. This video retrieval system allows a user to specify a query based on the 10 features and ASR transcript, and the query result is a ranked list of videos that can be further browsed at the shot level. To evaluate the usefulness of the feature-based query, we have developed a second system interface that
provides only ASR transcript-based querying, and we conducted an experiment with 12 test users to compare these 2 systems. Results were submitted to NIST and we are currently conducting further analysis of user performance with these 2 systems
Multilingual search for cultural heritage archives via combining multiple translation resources
The linguistic features of material in Cultural Heritage (CH) archives may be in various languages requiring a facility for effective multilingual search. The specialised
language often associated with CH content introduces problems for automatic translation to support search applications. The MultiMatch project is focused on enabling
users to interact with CH content across different media types and languages. We present results from a MultiMatch study exploring various translation techniques for
the CH domain. Our experiments examine translation techniques for the English language CLEF 2006 Cross-Language
Speech Retrieval (CL-SR) task using Spanish, French and German queries. Results compare effectiveness of our query
translation against a monolingual baseline and show improvement when combining a domain-specific translation lexicon with a standard machine translation system
PFTijah: text search in an XML database system
This paper introduces the PFTijah system, a text search system that is integrated with an XML/XQuery database management system. We present examples of its use, we explain some of the system internals, and discuss plans for future work. PFTijah is part of the open source release of MonetDB/XQuery
Document expansion for image retrieval
Successful information retrieval requires e�ective matching
between the user's search request and the contents of relevant
documents. Often the request entered by a user may
not use the same topic relevant terms as the authors' of the
documents. One potential approach to address problems
of query-document term mismatch is document expansion
to include additional topically relevant indexing terms in a
document which may encourage its retrieval when relevant
to queries which do not match its original contents well. We
propose and evaluate a new document expansion method
using external resources. While results of previous research
have been inconclusive in determining the impact of document
expansion on retrieval e�ectiveness, our method is
shown to work e�ectively for text-based image retrieval of
short image annotation documents. Our approach uses the
Okapi query expansion algorithm as a method for document
expansion. We further show improved performance can be
achieved by using a \document reduction" approach to include
only the signi�cant terms in a document in the expansion
process. Our experiments on the WikipediaMM task at
ImageCLEF 2008 show an increase of 16.5% in mean average
precision (MAP) compared to a variation of Okapi BM25 retrieval
model. To compare document expansion with query
expansion, we also test query expansion from an external resource
which leads an improvement by 9.84% in MAP over
our baseline. Our conclusion is that the document expansion
with document reduction and in combination with query expansion
produces the overall best retrieval results for shortlength
document retrieval. For this image retrieval task, we
also concluded that query expansion from external resource
does not outperform the document expansion method
The Lowlands team at TRECVID 2007
In this report we summarize our methods and results for the search tasks in\ud
TRECVID 2007. We employ two different kinds of search: purely ASR based and\ud
purely concept based search. However, there is not significant difference of the\ud
performance of the two systems. Using neighboring shots for the combination of\ud
two concepts seems to be beneficial. General preprocessing of queries increased\ud
the performance and choosing detector sources helped. However, for all automatic\ud
search components we need to perform further investigations
