    An active, ontology-driven network service for Internet collaboration

    Web portals have emerged as an important means of collaboration on the WWW, and the integration of ontologies promises to make them more accurate in how they serve users’ collaboration and information location requirements. However, web portals are essentially a centralised architecture resulting in difficulties supporting seamless roaming between portals and collaboration between groups supported on different portals. This paper proposes an alternative approach to collaboration over the web using ontologies that is de-centralised and exploits content-based networking. We argue that this approach promises a user-centric, timely, secure and location-independent mechanism, which is potentially more scaleable and universal than existing centralised portals

    The design and implementation of a P2P-based composite event notification system

    The development of large, open, and heterogeneous distributed systems is becoming increasingly dependent on event services to bind together the components of an application in such a way that they are able to react to changes in other components. One way to distribute event notifications around a distributed environment is to use content-based publish/ subscribe communication. Such a system mediates between publishers of information and subscribers who sign up to receive information by routing messages across the network from their source to the point of subscription using the message content and the client subscriptions. Although content-based publish/subscribe has been used successfully to develop simple event notification systems, in which events are routed through from external publisher to external client, more complex systems are possible that create new events, known as composites, based on the detection of patterns of events. Composite event notification, however, poses a number of challenges, including network management and network routing. In this paper, we discuss the design and implementation of a composite event notification system over a Chord-based peer-to-peer network using JXTA, and how we have addressed these challenges

    This report starts by, in Chapter 1, outlining aspects of querying and updating resources on the Web and on the Semantic Web, including the development of query and update languages to be carried out within the Rewerse project. From this outline, it becomes clear that several existing research areas and topics are of interest for this work in Rewerse. In the remainder of this report we further present state of the art surveys in a selection of such areas and topics. More precisely: in Chapter 2 we give an overview of logics for reasoning about state change and updates; Chapter 3 is devoted to briefly describing existing update languages for the Web, and also for updating logic programs; in Chapter 4 event-condition-action rules, both in the context of active database systems and in the context of semistructured data, are surveyed; in Chapter 5 we give an overview of some relevant rule-based agents frameworks

    Complex Event Processing (CEP) is the method of choice for the observation of system states and situations by means of events. A number of systems have been introduced that provide CEP in selected environments. Some are restricted to centralised systems, or to systems with synchronous communication, or to a limited space of event relations that are defined in advance. Many modern systems, though, are inherently distributed and asynchronous, and require a more powerful CEP. We present Cordies, a distributed system for the detection of correlated events that is designed for the operation in large-scale, heterogeneous networks and adapts dynamically to changing network conditions. With its expressive language to describe event relations, it is suitable for environments where neither the event space nor the situations of interest are predefined but are constantly adapted. In addition, Cordies supports Quality-of-Service (QoS) for communication in distributed event correlation detection

    TESLA: a formally defined event specification language

    The need for timely processing large amounts of information, flowing from the peripheral to the center of a system, is common to different application domains, and it has justified the development of several languages to describe how such information has to be processed. In this paper, we analyze such languages showing how most approaches lack the expressiveness required for the applications we target, or do not provide the precise semantics required to clearly state how the system should behave. Moving from these premises, we present TESLA, a complex event specification language. Each TESLA rule considers incoming data items as notifications of events and defines how certain patterns of events cause the occurrence of others, said to be "complex". TESLA has a simple syntax and a formal semantics, given in terms of a first order, metric temporal logic. It provides high expressiveness and flexibility in a rigorous framework, by offering content and temporal filters, negations, timers, aggregates, and fully customizable policies for event selection and consumption. The paper ends by showing how TESLA rules can be interpreted by a processing system, introducing an efficient event detection algorithm based on automata

    Efficient Aggregated Deliveries with Strong Guarantees in an Event-based Distributed System

    A popular approach to designing large scale distributed systems is to follow an event-based approach. In an event-based approach, a set of software components interact by producing and consuming events. The event-based model allows for the decoupling of software components, allowing distributed systems to scale to a large number of components. Event correlation allows for higher order reasoning of events by constructing complex events from single, consumable events. In many cases, event correlation applications rely on centralized setups or broker overlay networks. In the case of centralized setups, the guarantees for complex event delivery are stronger, however, centralized setups create performance bottlenecks and single points of failure. With broker overlays, the performance and fault tolerance are improved but at the cost of weaker guarantees
