A proposal for dependent optimization in scalabale region-based coding systems
We address in this paper the problem of optimal coding in the framework of region-based video coding systems, with a special stress on content-based functionalities. We present a coding system that can provide scaled layers (using PSNR or temporal content-based scalability) such that each one has an optimal partition with optimal bit allocation among the resulting regions. This coding system is based on a dependent optimization algorithm that can provide joint optimality for a group of layers or a group of frames.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Acute silencing of hippocampal CA3 reveals a dominant role in place field responses.
Neurons in hippocampal output area CA1 are thought to exhibit redundancy across cortical and hippocampal inputs. Here we show instead that acute silencing of CA3 terminals drastically reduces place field responses for many CA1 neurons, while a smaller number are unaffected or have increased responses. These results imply that CA3 is the predominant driver of CA1 place cells under normal conditions, while also revealing heterogeneity in input dominance across cells
Prioritized Sweeping Neural DynaQ with Multiple Predecessors, and Hippocampal Replays
During sleep and awake rest, the hippocampus replays sequences of place cells
that have been activated during prior experiences. These have been interpreted
as a memory consolidation process, but recent results suggest a possible
interpretation in terms of reinforcement learning. The Dyna reinforcement
learning algorithms use off-line replays to improve learning. Under limited
replay budget, a prioritized sweeping approach, which requires a model of the
transitions to the predecessors, can be used to improve performance. We
investigate whether such algorithms can explain the experimentally observed
replays. We propose a neural network version of prioritized sweeping
Q-learning, for which we developed a growing multiple expert algorithm, able to
cope with multiple predecessors. The resulting architecture is able to improve
the learning of simulated agents confronted to a navigation task. We predict
that, in animals, learning the world model should occur during rest periods,

Predictability: a way to characterize Complexity
Different aspects of the predictability problem in dynamical systems are
reviewed. The deep relation among Lyapunov exponents, Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy,
Shannon entropy and algorithmic complexity is discussed. In particular, we
emphasize how a characterization of the unpredictability of a system gives a
measure of its complexity. Adopting this point of view, we review some
developments in the characterization of the predictability of systems showing
different kind of complexity: from low-dimensional systems to high-dimensional
ones with spatio-temporal chaos and to fully developed turbulence. A special
attention is devoted to finite-time and finite-resolution effects on
predictability, which can be accounted with suitable generalization of the
standard indicators. The problems involved in systems with intrinsic randomness
is discussed, with emphasis on the important problems of distinguishing chaos
from noise and of modeling the system. The characterization of irregular
