The Regeneration of Aspen Stands in Southern Utah

    Get PDF
This fact sheet describes research conducted at Utah State University that identified factors to improve the success of regenerating aspen in southern Utah. Evaluating past silvicultural regeneration treatments indicated that the presence of pre-harvest advance reproduction, site preparation by broadcast burning, and decreasing browsing pressure could increase the quantity of aspen regeneration. The outcomes are generalized into an easy-to-use model, the Aspen Pyramid, to facilitate decision-making regarding regenerating aspen

    Get PDF
The purpose of the study was to make an evaluation of curricula-training effectiveness, applicability, and need for additional training within four of the state-supported college-universities of Utah. The schools researched were Utah State University, the University of Utah, Weber State College, and Southern Utah State College. The descriptive research techniques of a closed-form questionnaire were utilized to obtain informational data for the years 1969-1971 from graduates, faculties, and selected graduates concerning common and traditional curricular areas of Ca) music theory, (b) scoring and arranging, (c) music history, Cd) conducting and rehearsal techniques, (e) vocal methods and materials, (f) instrumental methods and materials, (g) group instruction, (h) private instruction on the major instrument, (i) performance, and (j) minor instrument repair. The data revealed that there was no significant difference in the responses to the questionnaire across graduates, across faculties, across institutions, or across graduates and faculty from the same institution. The conclusions from the study indicated: present training effectiveness is generally excellent in all areas of the music education curricula in all four schools; training is highly applicable; although the training is excellent and applicable, there remains the strong desire by both graduates and faculty for additional training in all areas of curricula with the exception of traditional-music history

The purpose of this study was to obtain faculty attitude information toward distance education at the Utah public colleges and universities. Faculty attitudes were deemed important with more and more money being allocated in Utah to the development of distance education; A survey of Utah public higher education faculty was conducted in the fall of 1997. The survey achieved a 66% return rate, a total of 421 faculty members; The survey found that 95% of the Utah faculty was familiar with distance education and that a high number would be willing to teach distance courses, even if they hadn\u27t already done so. Communication, Education and Business were the most willing academic areas and the most willing group was the comprehensive university group of Southern Utah University and Weber State University; The faculty believed distance education was an effective educational method and they were supportive of their institutions being involved in distance education delivery; They were slightly positive toward using distance education in their academic areas, but held slightly negative attitudes toward the use of distance education in their own courses. They were most familiar with correspondence study, but favored the use of two-way video and two-way audio methods; Nonverbal communication skills were important t faculty, but they did not agree that nonverbal skills could be as effective in the distance classrooms. Accessibility issues were important to faculty to increase education opportunities and availability in rural areas; The faculty stressed the need students have for face-to-face interaction with professors and with their peers, but weren\u27t sure distance education methods could deliver the needed interaction; The study concluded that administrators and organizers of distance education in Utah should continue to move ahead with distance education programs based on the willingness of the Utah faculty to teach distance education courses. The study also determined that the Utah faculty needs to be furnished with information concerning the effectiveness and quality of distance education
