Evaluating musical software using conceptual metaphors
An open challenge for interaction designers is to find ways of designing software to enhance the ability of novices to perform tasks that normally require specialized domain expertise. This challenge is particularly demanding in areas such as music analysis, where complex, abstract, domain-specific concepts and notations occur. One promising theoretical foundation for this work involves the identification of conceptual metaphors and image schemas, found by analyzing discourse. This kind of analysis has already been applied, with some success, both to musical concepts and, separately, to user interface design. The present work appears to be the first to combine these hitherto distinct bodies of research, with the aim of devising a general method for improving user interfaces for music. Some areas where this may require extensions to existing method are noted.
This paper presents the results of an exploratory evaluation of Harmony Space, a tool for playing, analysing and learning about harmony. The evaluation uses conceptual metaphors and image schemas elicited from the dialogues of experienced musicians discussing the harmonic progressions in a piece of music. Examples of where the user interface supports the conceptual metaphors, and where support could be improved, are discussed. Scaling Construction Grammar up to Production Systems: the SCIM
While a great effort has concerned the development of fully integrated
modular understanding systems, few researches have focused on the problem of
unifying existing linguistic formalisms with cognitive processing models. The
Situated Constructional Interpretation Model is one of these attempts. In this
model, the notion of "construction" has been adapted in order to be able to
mimic the behavior of Production Systems. The Construction Grammar approach
establishes a model of the relations between linguistic forms and meaning, by
the mean of constructions. The latter can be considered as pairings from a
topologically structured space to an unstructured space, in some way a special
kind of production rules
Compensation methods to support cooperative applications: A case study in automated verification of schema requirements for an advanced transaction model
Compensation plays an important role in advanced transaction models, cooperative work and workflow systems. A schema designer is typically required to supply for each transaction another transaction to semantically undo the effects of . Little attention has been paid to the verification of the desirable properties of such operations, however. This paper demonstrates the use of a higher-order logic theorem prover for verifying that compensating transactions return a database to its original state. It is shown how an OODB schema is translated to the language of the theorem prover so that proofs can be performed on the compensating transactions

Automatic view schema generation in object-oriented databases
An object-oriented data schema is a complex structure of classes interrelated via generalization and property decomposition relationships. We define an object-oriented view to be a virtual schema graph with possibly restructured generalization and decomposition hierarchies - rather than just one individual virtual class as proposed in the literature. In this paper, we propose a methodology, called MultiView, for supporting multiple such view schemata. MultiView is anchored on the following complementary ideas: (a) the view definer derives virtual classes and then integrates them into one consistent global schema graph and (b) the view definer specifies arbitrarily complex view schemata on this augmented global schema. The focus of this paper is, however, on the second, less explored, issue. This part of the view definition is performed using the following two steps: (1) view class selection and (2) view schema graph generation. For the first, we have developed a view definition language that can be used by the view definer to specify the selection of the desired view classes from the global schema. For the second, we have developed two algorithms that automatically augment the set of selected view classes to generate a complete, minimal and consistent view class generalization hierarchy. The first algorithm has linear complexity but it assumes that the global schema graph is a tree. The second algorithm overcomes this restricting assumption and thus allows for multiple inheritance, but it does so at the cost of a higher complexity

A graph database is a database where the data structures for the schema
and/or instances are modeled as a (labeled)(directed) graph or generalizations
of it, and where querying is expressed by graph-oriented operations and type
constructors. In this article we present the basic notions of graph databases,
give an historical overview of its main development, and study the main current
systems that implement them
XSRL: An XML web-services request language
One of the most serious challenges that web-service enabled e-marketplaces face is the lack of formal support for expressing service requests against UDDI-resident web-services in order to solve a complex business problem. In this paper we present a web-service request language (XSRL) developed on the basis of AI planning and the XML database query language XQuery. This framework is designed to handle and execute XSRL requests and is capable of performing planning actions under uncertainty on the basis of refinement and revision as new service-related information is accumulated (via interaction with the user or UDDI) and as execution circumstances necessitate change
Managing polyglot systems metadata with hypergraphs
A single type of data store can hardly fulfill every end-user requirements in the NoSQL world. Therefore, polyglot systems use different types of NoSQL datastores in combination. However, the heterogeneity of the data storage models makes managing the metadata a complex task in such systems, with only a handful of research carried out to address this. In this paper, we propose a hypergraph-based approach for representing the catalog of metadata in a polyglot system. Taking an existing common programming interface to NoSQL systems, we extend and formalize it as hypergraphs for managing metadata. Then, we define design constraints and query transformation rules for three representative data store types. Furthermore, we propose a simple query rewriting algorithm using the catalog itself for these data store types and provide a prototype implementation. Predicting Anchor Links between Heterogeneous Social Networks
People usually get involved in multiple social networks to enjoy new services
or to fulfill their needs. Many new social networks try to attract users of
other existing networks to increase the number of their users. Once a user
(called source user) of a social network (called source network) joins a new
social network (called target network), a new inter-network link (called anchor
link) is formed between the source and target networks. In this paper, we
concentrated on predicting the formation of such anchor links between
heterogeneous social networks. Unlike conventional link prediction problems in
which the formation of a link between two existing users within a single
network is predicted, in anchor link prediction, the target user is missing and
will be added to the target network once the anchor link is created. To solve
this problem, we use meta-paths as a powerful tool for utilizing heterogeneous
information in both the source and target networks. To this end, we propose an
effective general meta-path-based approach called Connector and Recursive
Meta-Paths (CRMP). By using those two different categories of meta-paths, we
model different aspects of social factors that may affect a source user to join
the target network, resulting in the formation of a new anchor link. Extensive
experiments on real-world heterogeneous social networks demonstrate the
