Combining Static and Dynamic Features for Multivariate Sequence Classification
Model precision in a classification task is highly dependent on the feature
space that is used to train the model. Moreover, whether the features are
sequential or static will dictate which classification method can be applied as
most of the machine learning algorithms are designed to deal with either one or
another type of data. In real-life scenarios, however, it is often the case
that both static and dynamic features are present, or can be extracted from the
data. In this work, we demonstrate how generative models such as Hidden Markov
Models (HMM) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) artificial neural networks can
be used to extract temporal information from the dynamic data. We explore how
the extracted information can be combined with the static features in order to
improve the classification performance. We evaluate the existing techniques and
suggest a hybrid approach, which outperforms other methods on several public

Improving Trust in Deep Neural Networks with Nearest Neighbors
Deep neural networks are used increasingly for perception and decision-making in UAVs. For example, they can be used to recognize objects from images and decide what actions the vehicle should take. While deep neural networks can perform very well at complex tasks, their decisions may be unintuitive to a human operator. When a human disagrees with a neural network prediction, due to the black box nature of deep neural networks, it can be unclear whether the system knows something the human does not or whether the system is malfunctioning. This uncertainty is problematic when it comes to ensuring safety. As a result, it is important to develop technologies for explaining neural network decisions for trust and safety. This paper explores a modification to the deep neural network classification layer to produce both a predicted label and an explanation to support its prediction. Specifically, at test time, we replace the final output layer of the neural network classifier by a k-nearest neighbor classifier. The nearest neighbor classifier produces 1) a predicted label through voting and 2) the nearest neighbors involved in the prediction, which represent the most similar examples from the training dataset. Because prediction and explanation are derived from the same underlying process, this approach guarantees that the explanations are always relevant to the predictions. We demonstrate the approach on a convolutional neural network for a UAV image classification task. We perform experiments using a forest trail image dataset and show empirically that the hybrid classifier can produce intuitive explanations without loss of predictive performance compared to the original neural network. We also show how the approach can be used to help identify potential issues in the network and training process
Investigation of sequence processing: A cognitive and computational neuroscience perspective
Serial order processing or sequence processing underlies
many human activities such as speech, language, skill
learning, planning, problem-solving, etc. Investigating
the neural bases of sequence processing enables us to
understand serial order in cognition and also helps in
building intelligent devices. In this article, we review
various cognitive issues related to sequence processing
with examples. Experimental results that give evidence
for the involvement of various brain areas will be described.
Finally, a theoretical approach based on statistical
models and reinforcement learning paradigm is
presented. These theoretical ideas are useful for studying
sequence learning in a principled way. This article
also suggests a two-way process diagram integrating
experimentation (cognitive neuroscience) and theory/
computational modelling (computational neuroscience).
This integrated framework is useful not only in the present
study of serial order, but also for understanding
many cognitive processes
Experiences in Mining Educational Data to Analyze Teacher's Performance: A Case Study with High Educational Teachers
Educational Data Mining (EDM) is a new paradigm aiming to mine and extract
knowledge necessary to optimize the effectiveness of teaching process. With normal
educational system work it’s often unlikely to accomplish fine system optimizing due to
large amount of data being collected and tangled throughout the system. EDM resolves
this problem by its capability to mine and explore these raw data and as a consequence of
extracting knowledge. This paper describes several experiments on real educational data
wherein the effectiveness of Data Mining is explained in migration the educational data
into knowledge. The experiments goal at first to identify important factors of teacher
behaviors influencing student satisfaction. In addition to presenting experiences gained
through the experiments, the paper aims to provide practical guidance of Data Mining
solutions in a real application
