Vehicular Fog Computing Enabled Real-time Collision Warning via Trajectory Calibration
Vehicular fog computing (VFC) has been envisioned as a promising paradigm for
enabling a variety of emerging intelligent transportation systems (ITS).
However, due to inevitable as well as non-negligible issues in wireless
communication, including transmission latency and packet loss, it is still
challenging in implementing safety-critical applications, such as real-time
collision warning in vehicular networks. In this paper, we present a vehicular
fog computing architecture, aiming at supporting effective and real-time
collision warning by offloading computation and communication overheads to
distributed fog nodes. With the system architecture, we further propose a
trajectory calibration based collision warning (TCCW) algorithm along with
tailored communication protocols. Specifically, an application-layer
vehicular-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication delay is fitted by the Stable
distribution with real-world field testing data. Then, a packet loss detection
mechanism is designed. Finally, TCCW calibrates real-time vehicle trajectories
based on received vehicle status including GPS coordinates, velocity,
acceleration, heading direction, as well as the estimation of communication
delay and the detection of packet loss. For performance evaluation, we build
the simulation model and implement conventional solutions including cloud-based
warning and fog-based warning without calibration for comparison. Real-vehicle
trajectories are extracted as the input, and the simulation results demonstrate
that the effectiveness of TCCW in terms of the highest precision and recall in
a wide range of scenarios
A City-Scale ITS-G5 Network for Next-Generation Intelligent Transportation Systems: Design Insights and Challenges
As we move towards autonomous vehicles, a reliable Vehicle-to-Everything
(V2X) communication framework becomes of paramount importance. In this paper we
present the development and the performance evaluation of a real-world
vehicular networking testbed. Our testbed, deployed in the heart of the City of
Bristol, UK, is able to exchange sensor data in a V2X manner. We will describe
the testbed architecture and its operational modes. Then, we will provide some
insight pertaining the firmware operating on the network devices. The system
performance has been evaluated under a series of large-scale field trials,
which have proven how our solution represents a low-cost high-quality framework
for V2X communications. Our system managed to achieve high packet delivery
ratios under different scenarios (urban, rural, highway) and for different
locations around the city. We have also identified the instability of the
packet transmission rate while using single-core devices, and we present some

Next-Generation SDN and Fog Computing: A New Paradigm for SDN-Based Edge Computing
In the last few years, we have been able to see how terms like Mobile Edge Computing, Cloudlets, and Fog computing have arisen as concepts that reach a level of popularity to express computing towards network Edge. Shifting some processing tasks from the Cloud to the Edge brings challenges to the table that might have been non-considered before in next-generation Software-Defined Networking (SDN). Efficient routing mechanisms, Edge Computing, and SDN applications are challenging to deploy as controllers are expected to have different distributions. In particular, with the advances of SDN and the P4 language, there are new opportunities and challenges that next-generation SDN has for Fog computing. The development of new pipelines along with the progress regarding control-to-data plane programming protocols can also promote data and control plane function offloading. We propose a new mechanism of deploying SDN control planes both locally and remotely to attend different challenges. We encourage researchers to develop new ways to functionally deploying Fog and Cloud control planes that let cross-layer planes interact by deploying specific control and data plane applications. With our proposal, the control and data plane distribution can provide a lower response time for locally deployed applications (local control plane). Besides, it can still be beneficial for a centralized and remotely placed control plane, for applications such as path computation within the same network and between separated networks (remote control plane)
Service Migration from Cloud to Multi-tier Fog Nodes for Multimedia Dissemination with QoE Support.
A wide range of multimedia services is expected to be offered for mobile users via various wireless access networks. Even the integration of Cloud Computing in such networks does not support an adequate Quality of Experience (QoE) in areas with high demands for multimedia contents. Fog computing has been conceptualized to facilitate the deployment of new services that cloud computing cannot provide, particularly those demanding QoE guarantees. These services are provided using fog nodes located at the network edge, which is capable of virtualizing their functions/applications. Service migration from the cloud to fog nodes can be actuated by request patterns and the timing issues. To the best of our knowledge, existing works on fog computing focus on architecture and fog node deployment issues. In this article, we describe the operational impacts and benefits associated with service migration from the cloud to multi-tier fog computing for video distribution with QoE support. Besides that, we perform the evaluation of such service migration of video services. Finally, we present potential research challenges and trends
