    New technologies for urban designers: the VENUE project

    In this report, we first outline the basic idea of VENUE. This involves developing digital tools froma foundation of geographic information systems (GIS) software which we then apply to urbandesign, a subject area and profession which has little tradition in using such tools. Our project wasto develop two types of tool, namely functional analysis based on embedding models of movementin local environments into GIS based on ideas from the field of space syntax; and secondlyfashioning these ideas in a wider digital context in which the entire range of GIS technologies werebrought to bear at the local scale. By local scale, we mean the representation of urban environmentsfrom about 1: 500 to around 1: 2500

    Sketching as a Tool for Efficient Networked Systems

    Today, computer systems need to cope with the explosive growth of data in the world. For instance, in data-center networks, monitoring systems are used to measure traffic statistics at high speed; and in financial technology companies, distributed processing systems are deployed to support graph analytics. To fulfill the requirements of handling such large datasets, we build efficient networked systems in a distributed manner most of the time. Ideally, we expect the systems to meet service-level objectives (SLOs) using the least amount of resource. However, existing systems constructed with conventional in-memory algorithms face the following challenges: (1) excessive resource requirements (e.g., CPU, ASIC, and memory) with high cost; (2) infeasibility in a larger scale; (3) processing the data too slowly to meet the objectives. To address these challenges, we propose sketching techniques as a tool to build more efficient networked systems. Sketching algorithms aim to process the data with one or several passes in an online, streaming fashion (e.g., a stream of network packets), and compute highly accurate results. With sketching, we only maintain a compact summary of the entire data and provide theoretical guarantees on error bounds. This dissertation argues for a sketching based design for large-scale networked systems, and demonstrates the benefits in three application contexts: (i) Network monitoring: we build generic monitoring frameworks that support a range of applications on both software and hardware with universal sketches. (ii) Graph pattern mining: we develop a swift, approximate graph pattern miner that scales to very large graphs by leveraging graph sketching techniques. (iii) Halo finding in N-body simulations: we design scalable halo finders on CPU and GPU by leveraging sketch-based heavy hitter algorithms

    A one-pass clustering based sketch method for network monitoring

    Network monitoring solutions need to cope with increasing network traffic volumes, as a result, sketch-based monitoring methods have been extensively studied to trade accuracy for memory scalability and storage reduction. However, sketches are sensitive to skewness in network flow distributions due to hash collisions, and need complicated performance optimization to adapt to line-rate packet streams. We provide Jellyfish, an efficient sketch method that performs one-pass clustering over the network stream. One-pass clustering is realized by adapting the monitoring granularity from the whole network flow to fragments called subflows, which not only reduces the ingestion rate but also provides an efficient intermediate representation for the input to the sketch. Jellyfish provides the network-flow level query interface by reconstructing the network-flow level counters by merging subflow records from the same network flow. We provide probabilistic analysis of the expected accuracy of both existing sketch methods and Jellyfish.     Packet Transactions: High-level Programming for Line-Rate Switches

    Many algorithms for congestion control, scheduling, network measurement, active queue management, security, and load balancing require custom processing of packets as they traverse the data plane of a network switch. To run at line rate, these data-plane algorithms must be in hardware. With today's switch hardware, algorithms cannot be changed, nor new algorithms installed, after a switch has been built. This paper shows how to program data-plane algorithms in a high-level language and compile those programs into low-level microcode that can run on emerging programmable line-rate switching chipsets. The key challenge is that these algorithms create and modify algorithmic state. The key idea to achieve line-rate programmability for stateful algorithms is the notion of a packet transaction : a sequential code block that is atomic and isolated from other such code blocks. We have developed this idea in Domino, a C-like imperative language to express data-plane algorithms. We show with many examples that Domino provides a convenient and natural way to express sophisticated data-plane algorithms, and show that these algorithms can be run at line rate with modest estimated die-area overhead.Comment: 16 page
