Using the Internet to improve university education: Problem-oriented web-based learning and the MUNICS environment
Up to this point, university education has largely remained unaffected by the developments of novel approaches to web-based learning. The paper presents a principled approach to the design of problem-oriented, web-based learning at the university level. The principles include providing authentic contexts with multimedia, supporting collaborative knowledge construction, making thinking visible with dynamic visualisation, quick access to content resources via Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), and flexible support by tele-tutoring. These principles are used in the Munich Net-based Learning In Computer Science (MUNICS) learning environment, which is designed to support students of computer science to apply their factual knowledge from the lectures to complex real-world problems. For example, students can model the knowledge management in an educational organisation with a graphical simulation tool. Some more general findings from a formative evaluation study with the MUNICS prototype are reported and discussed. Es werden theoretisch begründete Prinzipien für die Gestaltung problemorientierter, web-basierter Lernumgebungen an der Universität formuliert. Zu diesen Prinzipien gehören die Nutzung von Multimedia-Technologien für die Realisierung authentischer Problemkontexte, die Unterstützung der gemeinsamen Wissenskonstruktion, die dynamische Visualisierung, der schnelle Zugang zu weiterführenden Wissensressourcen mit Hilfe von Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien sowie die flexible Unterstützung durch Teletutoring. Diese Prinzipien wurden bei der Gestaltung der MUNICS Lernumgebung umgesetzt. MUNICS soll Studierende der Informatik bei der Wissensanwendung im Kontext komplexer praktischer Problemstellungen unterstützen. So können die Studierenden u.a. das Wissensmanagement in einer Bildungsorganisation mit Hilfe eines graphischen Simulationswerkzeugs modellieren. Es werden Ergebnisse einer formativen Evaluationsstudie berichtet und diskutiert. VisIVO - Integrated Tools and Services for Large-Scale Astrophysical Visualization
VisIVO is an integrated suite of tools and services specifically designed for
the Virtual Observatory. This suite constitutes a software framework for
effective visual discovery in currently available (and next-generation) very
large-scale astrophysical datasets. VisIVO consists of VisiVO Desktop - a stand
alone application for interactive visualization on standard PCs, VisIVO Server
- a grid-enabled platform for high performance visualization and VisIVO Web - a
custom designed web portal supporting services based on the VisIVO Server
functionality. The main characteristic of VisIVO is support for
high-performance, multidimensional visualization of very large-scale
astrophysical datasets. Users can obtain meaningful visualizations rapidly
while preserving full and intuitive control of the relevant visualization
parameters. This paper focuses on newly developed integrated tools in VisIVO
Server allowing intuitive visual discovery with 3D views being created from
data tables. VisIVO Server can be installed easily on any web server with a
database repository. We discuss briefly aspects of our implementation of VisiVO
Server on a computational grid and also outline the functionality of the
services offered by VisIVO Web. Finally we conclude with a summary of our work
and pointers to future developments
Using GIS to Explore the Technical and Social Aspects of Site Selection for Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities
This working paper reviews the current situation regarding radioactive waste disposal in the UK and questions the pursuance of a purely engineering approach to gaining public support. Past histories concerning the siting of nuclear industry facilities; power stations and latterly, waste repositories, are briefly discussed and used to demonstrate that more attention needs to be paid to the geographical and social science if current proposlas for a rock laboratory, and ultimately and operational repository, at Longlands Farm near Sellafield are to succeed. The usefulness of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and associated spatial information technologies are highlighted. Suggestions are made as to how these may be made available for public use via the Internet in adopting a more open approach to public information, consultation and participation
Historic Costume Simulation and its Application
This study highlights the potential of new technology as a means to provide new possibility for costumes in fragile condition to be utilised. The aim of this study is to create accurate digital duplicates of costumes from historical sources, and to explore the possibility of developing them as an exhibitory and educational method applying 3D apparel CAD and new media. To achieve this, three attributes for qualities of effective digital costumes were suggested: faithful reproduction, virtual fabrication, and interactive and stereographic appreciation. Most research data collections created or used by astronomers are
intrinsically multi-dimensional. In contrast, all visual representations of
data presented within research papers are exclusively 2-dimensional. We present
a resolution of this dichotomy that uses a novel technique for embedding
3-dimensional (3-d) visualisations of astronomy data sets in electronic-format
research papers. Our technique uses the latest Adobe Portable Document Format
extensions together with a new version of the S2PLOT programming library. The
3-d models can be easily rotated and explored by the reader and, in some cases,
modified. We demonstrate example applications of this technique including: 3-d
figures exhibiting subtle structure in redshift catalogues, colour-magnitude
diagrams and halo merger trees; 3-d isosurface and volume renderings of
cosmological simulations; and 3-d models of instructional diagrams and

Applying a User-centred Approach to Interactive Visualization Design
Analysing users in their context of work and finding out how and why they use different information resources is essential to provide interactive visualisation systems that match their goals and needs. Designers should actively involve the intended users throughout the whole process. This chapter presents a user-centered approach for the design of interactive visualisation systems. We describe three phases of the iterative visualisation design process: the early envisioning phase, the global specification hase, and the detailed specification phase. The whole design cycle is repeated until some criterion of success is reached. We discuss different techniques for the analysis of users, their tasks and domain. Subsequently, the design of prototypes and evaluation methods in visualisation practice are presented. Finally, we discuss the practical challenges in design and evaluation of collaborative visualisation environments. Our own case studies and those of others are used throughout the whole chapter to illustrate various approaches
