    A novel approach to modelling and simulating the contact behaviour between a human hand model and a deformable object

    A deeper understanding of biomechanical behaviour of human hands becomes fundamental for any human hand-operated Q2 activities. The integration of biomechanical knowledge of human hands into product design process starts to play an increasingly important role in developing an ergonomic product-to-user interface for products and systems requiring high level of comfortable and responsive interactions. Generation of such precise and dynamic models can provide scientific evaluation tools to support product and system development through simulation. This type of support is urgently required in many applications such as hand skill training for surgical operations, ergonomic study of a product or system developed and so forth. The aim of this work is to study the contact behaviour between the operators’ hand and a hand-held tool or other similar contacts, by developing a novel and precise nonlinear 3D finite element model of the hand and by investigating the contact behaviour through simulation. The contact behaviour is externalised by solving the problem using the bi-potential method. The human body’s biomechanical characteristics, such as hand deformity and structural behaviour, have been fully modelled by implementing anisotropic hyperelastic laws.     A Unified Particle System Framework for Multi-Phase, Multi-Material Visual Simulations

    We introduce a unified particle framework which integrates the phase-field method with multi-material simulation to allow modeling of both liquids and solids, as well as phase transitions between them. A simple elasto-plastic model is used to capture the behavior of various kinds of solids, including deformable bodies, granular materials, and cohesive soils. States of matter or phases, particularly liquids and solids, are modeled using the non-conservative Allen-Cahn equation. In contrast, materials---made of different substances---are advected by the conservative Cahn-Hilliard equation. The distributions of phases and materials are represented by a phase variable and a concentration variable, respectively, allowing us to represent commonly observed fluid-solid interactions. Our multi-phase, multi-material system is governed by a unified Helmholtz free energy density. This framework provides the first method in computer graphics capable of modeling a continuous interface between phases. It is versatile and can be readily used in many scenarios that are challenging to simulate. Examples are provided to demonstrate the capabilities and effectiveness of this approach

    Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics-Based Viscous Deformable Object Modelling

    Materials like fluids are long since important research objects of continuum mechanics as well as of computer graphics. Smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH) is one of the representation methods employed for continuous materials. Its simplicity in implementation and its realistic representation are drastically improved during the last decades. More recently, highly viscous fluids like honey, jam, and bread dough based on the SPH formulation have gained attention with impressive results. In this chapter, a novel implicit viscosity method is proposed. The internal viscosity forces are recursively calculated from the difference of the nearby velocities of the particles until they are small enough to be neglected. The proposed approach has longer time-steps compared with existing explicit viscosity methods, resulting in shorter computation time. Besides, the proposed method uses a physical viscosity coefficient, not an artificial one like in existing implicit viscosity methods, which helps predict the viscous behavior of continuous materials more accurately. The obtained results show that the computational time for the proposed approach is pre- dictable, while the accuracy in modelling the viscosity behaviour is similar or higher than existing methods

    A unified operator splitting approach for multi-scale fluid-particle coupling in the lattice Boltzmann method

    A unified framework to derive discrete time-marching schemes for coupling of immersed solid and elastic objects to the lattice Boltzmann method is presented. Based on operator splitting for the discrete Boltzmann equation, second-order time-accurate schemes for the immersed boundary method, viscous force coupling and external boundary force are derived. Furthermore, a modified formulation of the external boundary force is introduced that leads to a more accurate no-slip boundary condition. The derivation also reveals that the coupling methods can be cast into a unified form, and that the immersed boundary method can be interpreted as the limit of force coupling for vanishing particle mass. In practice, the ratio between fluid and particle mass determines the strength of the force transfer in the coupling. The integration schemes formally improve the accuracy of first-order algorithms that are commonly employed when coupling immersed objects to a lattice Boltzmann fluid. It is anticipated that they will also lead to superior long-time stability in simulations of complex fluids with multiple scales
