European governance challenges in bio-engineering : making perfect life : bio-engineering (in) the 21st century : final report

In the STOA project Making Perfect Life four fields were studied of 21st century bio-engineering: engineering of living artefacts, engineering of the body, engineering of the brain, and engineering of intelligent artefacts. This report describes the main results of the project. It shows how developments in the four fields of bio-engineering are shaped by two megatrends: "biology becoming technology" and "technology becoming biology". These developments result in a broadening of the bio-engineering debate in our society. The report addresses the long term views that are inspiring this debate and discusses a multitude of ethical, legal and social issues that arise from bio-engineering developments in the fields described. Against this background four specific developments are studied in more detail: the rise of human genome sequencing, the market introduction of neurodevices, the capturing by information technology of the psychological and physiological states of users, and the pursuit of standardisation in synthetic biology. These developments are taken in this report as a starting point for an analysis of some of the main European governance challenges in 21st century bio-engineering

The challenges of legal translation: An error analysis of trainees' translations

There has been a remarkable growth in legal translation in the last years due to globalization and the world’s connectedness. The aim of this study was to examine and evaluate which are the main translation errors committed by non-expert translators when dealing with legal texts in English and Italian. The participants of this study were students attending a master’s degree in translation at the University of Padua. The texts analysed for this dissertation include three different genres of legal texts in order to have a better understanding of the results of this research. The findings revealed the following hypothesis. The legal text’s typology mostly influenced the lexical and syntactic choices in the target text (TT). Furthermore, one of the major issues was the difference between legal systems, that is common law and civil law and their respective sources. Lastly, this dissertation may turn out to be a useful resource for teachers of English-Italian translation as they could be able to predict the main difficulties of trainee students in translating legal texts from English into Italian and, as a consequence, provide adequate solutions

Conflict in Palestine 1917-1948: Palestinian responses to Zionist settlement in Palestine with particular reference to the attempts to solve the conflict

There are two themes contained in this thesis: firstly, the examination of the Palestinian attitude, concept and views towards Zionist settlement in Palestine during the period 1917-1948, secondly, the analysis of their arguments and responses to the different attempts to solve the Palestine conflict during this period. The Palestinians viewed Zionism as a European political movement which was connected with Western colonialism, and sought to transform Palestine into an exclusively Jewish state. Therefore, they resisted this alien settlement in their country by all possible means, political as well as military. The Palestinians, however, failed to persuade the British Government to grant them independence or to stop Zionist settlement because they, as a traditional society, did not possess the material or military power to match the combined forces of the British Empire and the Zionist movement. However, during this period the British Government suggested certain proposals to solve the conflict, but these proposals were rejected by the Palestinians, the Zionists or by both. Therefore, in 1947 the British Government transferred the problem to the United Nations. On 29th November 1947 the U.N., under the influence of the Western powers and the approval of the Soviet Union, endorsed a partition scheme, similar to a partition plan suggested by the Royal Commission in 1937, which proposed the establishment of two independent states, Arab and Jewish. The Palestinians rejected the proposal on the grounds that it was not based on the principles of justice, equality and the right to self-determination. This study suggests that the Palestine conflict was created as result of alien settlement in a country which was already inhabited by a people who were unwilling to compromise on what they saw as their right to independence under a national government which would represent the wishes of the majority
