    Out of Sight,...:How Asymmetry in Video-Conference Affects Social Interaction

    As social-mediated interaction is becoming increasingly important and multi-modal, even expanding into virtual reality and physical telepresence with robotic avatars, new challenges emerge. For instance, video calls have become the norm and it is increasingly common that people experience a form of asymmetry, such as not being heard or seen by their communication partners online due to connection issues. Previous research has not yet extensively explored the effect on social interaction. In this study, 61 Dyads, i.e. 122 adults, played a quiz-like game using a video-conferencing platform and evaluated the quality of their social interaction by measuring five sub-scales of social presence. The Dyads had either symmetrical access to social cues (both only audio, or both audio and video) or asymmetrical access (one partner receiving only audio, the other audio and video). Our results showed that in the case of asymmetrical access, the party receiving more modalities, i.e. audio and video from the other, felt significantly less connected than their partner. We discuss these results in relation to the Media Richness Theory (MRT) and the Hyperpersonal Model: in asymmetry, more modalities or cues will not necessarily increase feeling socially connected, in opposition to what was predicted by MRT. We hypothesize that participants sending fewer cues compensate by increasing the richness of their expressions and that the interaction shifts towards an equivalent richness for both participants

    Natural language generation for social robotics: Opportunities and challenges

    In the increasingly popular and diverse research area of social robotics, the primary goal is to develop robot agents that exhibit socially intelligent behaviour while interacting in a face-to-face context with human partners. An important aspect of face-to-face social conversation is fluent, flexible linguistic interaction: as Bavelas et al. [1] point out, face-to-face dialogue is both the basic form of human communication and the richest and most flexible, combining unrestricted verbal expression with meaningful non-verbal acts such as gestures and facial displays, along with instantaneous, continuous collaboration between the speaker and the listener. In practice, however, most developers of social robots tend not to use the full possibilities of the unrestricted verbal expression afforded by face-to-face conversation; instead, they generally tend to employ relatively simplistic processes for choosing the words for their robots to say. This contrasts with the work carried out Natural Language Generation (NLG), the field of computational linguistics devoted to the automated production of high-quality linguistic content: while this research area is also an active one, in general most effort in NLG is focussed on producing high-quality written text. This article summarises the state-of-the-art in the two individual research areas of social robotics and natural language generation. It then discusses the reasons why so few current social robots make use of more sophisticated generation techniques. Finally, an approach is proposed to bringing some aspects of NLG into social robotics, concentrating on techniques and tools that are most appropriate to the needs of socially interactive robots

    Advances in Human-Robot Handshaking

    The use of social, anthropomorphic robots to support humans in various industries has been on the rise. During Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), physically interactive non-verbal behaviour is key for more natural interactions. Handshaking is one such natural interaction used commonly in many social contexts. It is one of the first non-verbal interactions which takes place and should, therefore, be part of the repertoire of a social robot.     Touching a mechanical body: tactile contact with body parts of a humanoid robot is physiologically arousing

    A large literature describes the use of robots’ physical bodies to support communication with people. Touch is a natural channel for physical interaction, yet it is not understood how principles of interpersonal touch might carry over to human-robot interaction. Ten students participated in an interactive anatomy lesson with a small, humanoid robot. Participants either touched or pointed to an anatomical region of the robot in each of 26 trials while their skin conductance response was measured. Touching less accessible regions of the robot (e.g., buttocks and genitals) was more physiologically arousing than touching more accessible regions (e.g., hands and feet). No differences in physiological arousal were found when just pointing to those same anatomical regions. Social robots can elicit tactile responses in human physiology, a result that signals the power of robots, and should caution mechanical and interaction designers about positive and negative effects of human-robot interactions

    A Comparison of Avatar-, Video-, and Robot-Mediated Interaction on Users’ Trust in Expertise

    Communication technologies are becoming increasingly diverse in form and functionality. A central concern is the ability to detect whether others are trustworthy. Judgments of trustworthiness rely, in part, on assessments of non-verbal cues, which are affected by media representations. In this research, we compared trust formation on three media representations. We presented 24 participants with advisors represented by two of the three alternate formats: video, avatar, or robot. Unknown to the participants, one was an expert, and the other was a non-expert. We observed participants’ advice-seeking behavior under risk as an indicator of their trust in the advisor. We found that most participants preferred seeking advice from the expert, but we also found a tendency for seeking robot or video advice. Avatar advice, in contrast, was more rarely sought. Users’ self-reports support these findings. These results suggest that when users make trust assessments, the physical presence of the robot representation might compensate for the lack of identity cues

    Human-Robot Handshaking: A Review

    For some years now, the use of social, anthropomorphic robots in various situations has been on the rise. These are robots developed to interact with humans and are equipped with corresponding extremities. They already support human users in various industries, such as retail, gastronomy, hotels, education and healthcare. During such Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) scenarios, physical touch plays a central role in the various applications of social robots as interactive non-verbal behaviour is a key factor in making the interaction more natural. Shaking hands is a simple, natural interaction used commonly in many social contexts and is seen as a symbol of greeting, farewell and congratulations. In this paper, we take a look at the existing state of Human-Robot Handshaking research, categorise the works based on their focus areas, draw out the major findings of these areas while analysing their pitfalls. We mainly see that some form of synchronisation exists during the different phases of the interaction. In addition to this, we also find that additional factors like gaze, voice facial expressions etc. can affect the perception of a robotic handshake and that internal factors like personality and mood can affect the way in which handshaking behaviours are executed by humans. Based on the findings and insights, we finally discuss possible ways forward for research on such physically interactive behaviours.Comment: Pre-print version.     Social Responses to Media Technologies in the 21st Century: The Media are Social Actors Paradigm

    Clifford Nass and his colleagues proposed the Computers Are Social Actors (CASA) paradigm in the 1990s and demonstrated that we treat computers in some of the ways we treat humans. To account for technological advances and to refine explanations for CASA results, this paper proposes the Media Are Social Actors (MASA) paradigm. We begin by distinguishing the roles of primary and secondary cues in evoking medium-as-social-actor presence and social responses. We then discuss the roles of individual differences and contextual factors in these responses and identify mindless and mindful anthropomorphism as two major complementary mechanisms for understanding MASA phenomena. Based on evolutionary psychology explanations for socialness, we conclude with nine formal propositions and suggestions for future research to test and apply MASA

    Personality Perception of Robot Avatar Teleoperators in Solo and Dyadic Tasks

    Humanoid robot avatars are a potential new telecommunication tool, whereby a user is remotely represented by a robot that replicates their arm, head, and possible face movements. They have been shown to have a number of benefits over more traditional media such as phones or video calls. However, using a teleoperated humanoid as a communication medium inherently changes the appearance of the operator, and appearance-based stereotypes are used in interpersonal judgments (whether consciously or unconsciously). One such judgment that plays a key role in how people interact is personality. Hence, we have been motivated to investigate if and how using a robot avatar alters the perceived personality of teleoperators. To do so, we carried out two studies where participants performed 3 communication tasks, solo in study one and dyadic in study two, and were recorded on video both with and without robot mediation. Judges recruited using online crowdsourcing services then made personality judgments of the participants in the video clips. We observed that judges were able to make internally consistent trait judgments in both communication conditions. However, judge agreement was affected by robot mediation, although which traits were affected was highly task dependent. Our most important finding was that in dyadic tasks personality trait perception was shifted to incorporate cues relating to the robot’s appearance when it was used to communicate.     International audienceCet ouvrage rassemble les travaux d’études et de recherche effectués dans le cadre du cours «Cognition, Affects et Interaction » que nous avons animé au 1er semestre 2015-2016. Cette deuxième édition de cours poursuit le principe inauguré en 2014 : aux cours magistraux donnés sur la thématique "Cognition, Interaction & Affects" qui donnent les outils méthodologiques des composantes de l’interaction socio-communicative, nous avons couplé une introduction à la robotique sociale et un apprentissage actif par travail de recherche en binômes. Le principe de ces travaux d’études et de recherche est d’effectuer une recherche bibliographique et de rédiger un article de synthèse sur un aspect de l’interaction homme-robot. Si plusieurs sujets ont été proposés aux étudiants en début d’année, certains binômes ont choisi d’aborder l’interaction avec un angle original qui reflète souvent les trajectoires de formation variés des étudiants en sciences cognitives (ingénierie, sociologie, psychologie, etc). Le résultat dépasse nos espérances : le lecteur trouvera une compilation d’articles argumentés de manière solide, rédigés de manière claire et présentés avec soin. Ces premières «publications» reflètent les capacités singulières de réflexion de cette promotion en nette augmentation par rapport à l’année précédente. Nous espérons que cette série d’ouvrages disponibles sous HAL puisse servir de point d’entrée à des étudiants ou chercheurs intéressés à explorer ce champ de recherches pluri-disciplinaire
