    The complexity and the intensity of crisis-related situations require the use of advanced distributed systems infrastructures. In order to develop such infrastructures, specific architectures need to be applied such as Component-based Modelling, Object-Oriented, Aspect-Oriented and Service-Oriented Design. This paper focuses on the use of Service-Oriented Design techniques for the development of the ATHENA Crisis Management Distributed System. The function of the ATHENA Crisis Management Distributed System is based on the use of data generated by social media for the evaluation of the severity of the conditions of a crisis and the coordination of the appropriate measures in response to the crisis. The paper presents a new definition for Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and specifies the benefits that are generated by the use of this new definition in the development of the ATHENA system.     The 5th JRC ECML Crisis Management Technology Workshop on Software and data formats used in Crisis Management Rooms and Situation Monitoring Centres for information collection and display, organised by the European Commission Joint Research Centre in collaboration with the DRIVER Consortium Partners, took place in the European Crisis Management Laboratory (ECML) of the JRC in Ispra, Italy, from 16 to 18 June 2014. 32 participants from stakeholders in civil protection, academia, and industry attended the workshop. The workshop's purpose was to present, demonstrate, and explore IT solutions for Situation Awareness and Incident Management and the related design considerations, applied within the context of humanitarian aid and civil protection.     With the advancement of technology, patient information has been being computerized in order to facilitate the work of healthcare professionals and improve the quality of healthcare delivery. However, there are many heterogeneous information systems that need to communicate, sharing information and making it available when and where it is needed. To respond to this requirement the Agency for Integration, Diffusion, and Archiving of medical information (AIDA) was created, a multi-agent and service-based platform that ensures interoperability among healthcare information systems. In order to improve the performance of the platform, beyond the SWOT analysis performed, a system to prevent failures that may occur in the platform database and also in machines where the agents are executed was created. The system has been implemented in the Centro Hospitalar do Porto (one of the major Portuguese hospitals), and it is now possible to define critical workload periods of AIDA, improving high availability and load balancing.     The rapid growth in data volume and complexity has needed the adoption of advanced technologies to extract valuable insights for decision-making. This project aims to address this need by developing a comprehensive framework that combines Big Data processing, analytics, and visualization techniques to enable effective analysis of World Bank data. The problem addressed in this study is the need for a scalable and efficient Business Intelligence solution that can handle the vast amounts of data generated by the World Bank. Therefore, a Big Data architecture is implemented on a real use case for the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development. The findings of this project demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution. Through the integration of Apache Spark and Apache Hive, data is processed using Extract, Transform and Load techniques, allowing for efficient data preparation. The use of Apache Kylin enables the construction of a multidimensional model, facilitating fast and interactive queries on the data. Moreover, data visualization techniques are employed to create intuitive and informative visual representations of the analysed data. The key conclusions drawn from this project highlight the advantages of a Big Data-driven Business Intelligence solution in processing and analysing World Bank data. The implemented framework showcases improved scalability, performance, and flexibility compared to traditional approaches. In conclusion, this bachelor thesis presents a Business Intelligence solution based on a Big Data architecture for processing and analysing the World Bank data. The project findings emphasize the importance of scalable and efficient data processing techniques, multidimensional modelling, and data visualization for deriving valuable insights. The application of these techniques contributes to the field by demonstrating the potential of Big Data Business Intelligence solutions in addressing the challenges associated with large-scale data analysis
