    CARMA : complete autonomous responsible management agent (system)

Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.The continuing expansion of telecommunication service domains, from Quality of Service guaranteed connectivity to ubiquitous cloud environments, has introduced an ever increasing level of complexity in the field of service management. This complexity arises not only from the sheer variability in service requirements but also through the required but ill-defined interaction of multiple organisations and providers. As a result of this complexity and variability, the provisioning and performance of current services is adversely affected, often with little or no accountability to the users of the service. This exposes a need for total coverage in the management of such complex services, a system which provides for service responsibility. Service responsibility is defined as the provisioning of service resilience and the judgement of service risk across all the service components. To be effective in responsible management for current complex services, any framework must be able to interact with multiple providers and management systems. The CARMA framework proposed by this thesis, aims to fulfil these requirements through a multi-agent system, that is based in a global market, and can negotiate and be responsible for multiple complex services. The research presented in this thesis draws upon previous research in the fields of Network Management and Cloud service management, and utilises agent technology to build a system that is capable of providing resilient and risk aware management of services comprised of multiple providers. To this end the research aims to present the architecture, agent functionality and interactions of the CARMA system, as well as the structure of the marketplace, contract specification and risk management. As the scope and concepts of the proposed system are relatively unexplored, a model and simulation were developed to verify the concepts, explore the issues, assess the assumptions and validate the system. The results of the simulation determined that the introduction of CARMA has the potential to reduce the risk in contracting new services, increase the reliability of contracted services, and increase the utility of providers participating in the market

    Automated ubiquitos delivery of generalised services in a open market

Faculty of Information Technology.Telecommunications networks, and the services delivered over those networks have become an integral part of most people's lives in the developed world. The range and availability of these services is increasing, however the management of services still lags well behind technical capability, providing unnecessary barriers to the adoption of available technology. The work described in this dissertation has a primary goal of enabling flexible, automated delivery of any telecommunication-based service. More specifically, a mechanism to solve the administrative problems in enabling end users to automatically establish service agreements for any available service, from any available provider. The aims of this work are to: 1. enable the description of service level agreements(SLA) for generalised telecommunication-based services, and 2. provide mechanisms by which those service level agreements may be managed. The term “generalised services” means that all service types are managed using a common framework and set of processes. To derive at a suitable service level agreement description language, the characteristics of telecommunication-based services are first analysed, along with considerations in delivering a service, including service quality, resource allocation and configuration, service pricing and service ubiquity. The current art in SLA description is studied and the requirements of an appropriate language are proposed. An ontological approach to SLA description is adopted, and an SLA description language is developed based on semantic web technologies. To develop the mechanisms for SLA management, the current art is first analysed, and a set of requirements for a suitable SLA management framework are proposed. These requirements are used to guide the design of a multi-agent SLA negotiation framework, including a detailed description of the communication model, framework processes, and social behaviour of the agents involved. Finally, the SLA description language and the negotiation framework are compared with the closest art, and are assessed against tightly argued criteria. An experimental framework and use cases are developed to explore an application of the proposed solution, and to validate completeness. The approach taken has led to the following two key contributions: 1. A set of formal ontologies that may be used to semantically describe secure service level agreements for any application domain. 2. A multi-agent system providing an open market where services can be discovered, participants identified, and negotiation performed using context specific mechanisms. The conclusions of the work are that an ontology-based SLA description language is appropriate for describing generalised SLAs, and that a distributed, agent based negotiation platform that is based on an open market and uses a minimal set of core processes with an extensible, ontology based communication mechanism is appropriate for managing service level agreements in a generalised, automated and ubiquitous way

    A Curriculum for Training Extension Agents in the Field of Animal Science.

    The purpose of the study was to develop a curriculum for inservice training of Extension agents involved in animal science work. Selected aspects of curriculum and learning theory furnished the basis for a curriculum model applicable to the work area of animal science. The curriculum was derived from inputs obtained from Extension specialists in animal science, Extension agents doing livestock work and selected animal science disciplines. Curriculum disciplines included: (1) livestock management, (2) nutrition, (3) marketing, (4) breeding and physiology, and (5) meat technology. An analysis of agent cognitive ability established the agent\u27s educational requirements. Thirty-two concepts in the animal science disciplines were identified and rated by specialists according to their relevance to animal science work. Agents rated the same concepts in terms of clientele need and desirabilty for self-improvement. All concepts were highly rated and included in the curriculum. The present cognitive ability of Extension agents doing animal science work was measured as mean percentage scores attained on test items associated with each discipline concept. The average overall score was 48.1 percent. The highest score was achieved in the discipline of breeding and physiology and the lowest in meat technology. The nutrition, livestock management, and marketing mean scores were equal and fell into an intermediate level between breeding and physiology and meat technology. Agent cognitive ability was measured at the knowledge level and at a higher-than-knowledge level. Mean scores were generally higher for the knowledge level of cognition, as anticipated. Analysis of variance of cognitive ability of agents by discipline, cognitive level, and educational background revealed significant mean score differences within these variables. There was also a highly significant discipline and cognitive level interaction which implied that mean score differences occurred between cognitive levels within disciplines. Extension specialists estimated the level of cognitive ability expected of agents doing animal science work. The discrepancy between expected and present agent cognitive ability emphasized educational needs and suggested discipline and concept priorities in the curriculum. The curriculum reported in the study is extensive and comprehensive of the major animal science content areas. It represents a source of educational objectives, discipline concepts, learning experiences and evalution procedures for devising and implementing an in-service training program for Extension agents doing animal science work

    Service management for multi-domain Active Networks

    The Internet is an example of a multi-agent system. In our context, an agent is synonymous with network operators, Internet service providers (ISPs) and content providers. ISPs mutually interact for connectivity's sake, but the fact remains that two peering agents are inevitably self-interested. Egoistic behaviour manifests itself in two ways. Firstly, the ISPs are able to act in an environment where different ISPs would have different spheres of influence, in the sense that they will have control and management responsibilities over different parts of the environment. On the other hand, contention occurs when an ISP intends to sell resources to another, which gives rise to at least two of its customers sharing (hence contending for) a common transport medium. The multi-agent interaction was analysed by simulating a game theoretic approach and the alignment of dominant strategies adopted by agents with evolving traits were abstracted. In particular, the contention for network resources is arbitrated such that a self-policing environment may emerge from a congested bottleneck. Over the past 5 years, larger ISPs have simply peddled as fast as they could to meet the growing demand for bandwidth by throwing bandwidth at congestion problems. Today, the dire financial positions of Worldcom and Global Crossing illustrate, to a certain degree, the fallacies of over-provisioning network resources. The proposed framework in this thesis enables subscribers of an ISP to monitor and police each other's traffic in order to establish a well-behaved norm in utilising limited resources. This framework can be expanded to other inter-domain bottlenecks within the Internet. One of the main objectives of this thesis is also to investigate the impact on multi-domain service management in the future Internet, where active nodes could potentially be located amongst traditional passive routers. The advent of Active Networking technology necessitates node-level computational resource allocations, in addition to prevailing resource reservation approaches for communication bandwidth. Our motivation is to ensure that a service negotiation protocol takes account of these resources so that the response to a specific service deployment request from the end-user is consistent and predictable. To promote the acceleration of service deployment by means of Active Networking technology, a pricing model is also evaluated for computational resources (e.g., CPU time and memory). Previous work in these areas of research only concentrate on bandwidth (i.e., communication) - related resources. Our pricing approach takes account of both guaranteed and best-effort service by adapting the arbitrage theorem from financial theory. The central tenet for our approach is to synthesise insights from different disciplines to address problems in data networks. The greater parts of research experience have been obtained during direct and indirect participation in the 1ST-10561 project known as FAIN (Future Active IP Networks) and ACTS-AC338 project called MIAMI (Mobile Intelligent Agent for Managing the Information Infrastructure). The Inter-domain Manager (IDM) component was integrated as an integral part of the FAIN policy-based network management systems (PBNM). Its monitoring component (developed during the MIAMI project) learns about routing changes that occur within a domain so that the management system and the managed nodes have the same topological view of the network. This enabled our reservation mechanism to reserve resources along the existing route set up by whichever underlying routing protocol is in place

In addition, the lack of interactivity with customers has resulted in high churn rate and improper security measures have contributed into considerable business loss. These issues are the main cause of high operational costs and subscription fees in the Pay-TV systems. As a result, this paper presents the Mobile Conditional Access System (MICAS) as an end-to-end access control solution for Pay-TV systems. It incorporates the mobile and broadcasting systems and provides a platform whereby service providers can effectively interact with their customers, personalize their services and adopt appropriate security measurements. This would result in the decrease of operating expenses and increase of customers' satisfaction in the system.
