    Admission Control and Scheduling for High-Performance WWW Servers

    In this paper we examine a number of admission control and scheduling protocols for high-performance web servers based on a 2-phase policy for serving HTTP requests. The first "registration" phase involves establishing the TCP connection for the HTTP request and parsing/interpreting its arguments, whereas the second "service" phase involves the service/transmission of data in response to the HTTP request. By introducing a delay between these two phases, we show that the performance of a web server could be potentially improved through the adoption of a number of scheduling policies that optimize the utilization of various system components (e.g. memory cache and I/O). In addition, to its premise for improving the performance of a single web server, the delineation between the registration and service phases of an HTTP request may be useful for load balancing purposes on clusters of web servers. We are investigating the use of such a mechanism as part of the Commonwealth testbed being developed at Boston University

    National Space Science Data Center data archive and distribution service (NDADS) automated retrieval mail system user's guide

    The National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) has developed an automated data retrieval request service utilizing our Data Archive and Distribution Service (NDADS) computer system. NDADS currently has selected project data written to optical disk platters with the disks residing in a robotic 'jukebox' near-line environment. This allows for rapid and automated access to the data with no staff intervention required. There are also automated help information and user services available that can be accessed. The request system permits an average-size data request to be completed within minutes of the request being sent to NSSDC. A mail message, in the format described in this document, retrieves the data and can send it to a remote site. Also listed in this document are the data currently available

    There\u27s a fly in my soup : the influence of service guarantees and personal requests on customer voice

    Anecdotal evidence suggests that service guarantees and personal requests by service workers encourage customers to voice following failure. However, empirical support for these tactics in facilitating complaints to the organisation is limited. To address this deficiency, a 3 (guarantee treatment: none, unconditional or combined) x 2 (personal request to voice: yes or no) x 2 (failure severity: minor or major) full factorial, between subjects experiment was conducted in a restaurant context. Findings suggest that offering a service guarantee, regardless of whether it is unconditional or combined, can encourage voice. Severity of the failure was also found to be associated with voice. Surprisingly, however, a personal request to voice was not related to customers&rsquo; voice intentions. Implications of the findings are discussed.<br /

    Planning and monitoring the execution of web service requests

    Interaction with web services enabled marketplaces would be greatly facilitated if users were given a high level service request language to express their goals in complex business domains. This could be achieved by using a planning framework which monitors the execution of planned goals against predefined standard business processes and interacts with the user to achieve goal satisfaction. We present a planning architecture that accepts high level requests, expressed in XSRL (Xml Service Request Language). The planning framework is based on the principle of interleaving planning and execution. This is accomplished on the basis of refinement and revision as new service-related information is gathered from UDDI and web services instances, and as execution circumstances necessitate change.
