    Study, optimization and silicon implementation of a smart high-voltage conditioning circuit for electrostatic vibration energy harvesting system

    La récupération de l'énergie des vibrations est un concept relativement nouveau qui peut être utilisé dans l'alimentation des dispositifs embarqués de puissance à micro-échelle avec l'énergie des vibrations omniprésentes dans l environnement. Cette thèse contribue à une étude générale des récupérateurs de l'énergie des vibrations (REV) employant des transducteurs électrostatiques. Un REV électrostatique typique se compose d'un transducteur capacitif, de l'électronique de conditionnement et d un élément de stockage. Ce travail se concentre sur l'examen du circuit de conditionnement auto-synchrone proposé en 2006 par le MIT, qui combine la pompe de charge à base de diodes et le convertisseur DC-DC inductif de type de flyback qui est entraîné par le commutateur. Cette architecture est très prometteuse car elle élimine la commande de grille précise des transistors utilisés dans les architectures synchrones, tandis qu'un commutateur unique se met en marche rarement. Cette thèse propose une analyse théorique du circuit de conditionnement. Nous avons développé un algorithme qui par commutation appropriée de flyback implémente la stratégie de conversion d'énergie optimale en tenant compte des pertes liées à la commutation. En ajoutant une fonction de calibration, le système devient adaptatif pour les fluctuations de l'environnement. Cette étude a été validée par la modélisation comportementale.Une autre contribution consiste en la réalisation de l'algorithme proposé au niveau du circuit CMOS. Les difficultés majeures de conception étaient liées à l'exigence de haute tension et à la priorité de la conception faible puissance. Nous avons conçu un contrôleur du commutateur haute tension de faible puissance en utilisant la technologie AMS035HV. Sa consommation varie entre quelques centaines de nanowatts et quelques microwatts, en fonction de nombreux facteurs - paramètres de vibrations externes, niveaux de tension de la pompe de charge, la fréquence de la commutation de commutateur, la fréquence de la fonction de calibration, etc.Nous avons également réalisé en silicium, fabriqué et testé un commutateur à haute tension avec une nouvelle architecture de l'élévateur de tension de faible puissance. En montant sur des composants discrets de la pompe de charge et du circuit de retour et en utilisant l'interrupteur conçu, nous avons caractérisé le fonctionnement large bande haute-tension du prototype de transducteur MEMS fabriqué à côté de cette thèse à l'ESIEE Paris. Lorsque le capteur est excité par des vibrations stochastiques ayant un niveau d'accélération de 0,8 g rms distribué dans la bande 110-170 Hz, jusqu'à 0,75 W de la puissance nette a été récupérée.Vibration energy harvesting is a relatively new concept that can be used in powering micro-scale power embedded devices with the energy of vibrations omnipresent in the surrounding. This thesis contributes to a general study of vibration energy harvesters (VEHs) employing electrostatic transducers. A typical electrostatic VEH consists of a capacitive transducer, conditioning electronics and a storage element. This work is focused on investigations of the reported by MIT in 2006 auto-synchronous conditioning circuit, which combines the diode-based charge pump and the inductive flyback energy return driven by the switch. This architecture is very promising since it eliminates precise gate control of transistors employed in synchronous architectures, while a unique switch turns on rarely. This thesis addresses the theoretical analysis of the conditioning circuit. We developed an algorithm that by proper switching of the flyback allows the optimal energy conversion strategy taking into account the losses associated with the switching. By adding the calibration function, the system became adaptive to the fluctuations in the environment. This study was validated by the behavioral modeling. Another contribution consists in realization of the proposed algorithm on the circuit level. The major design difficulties were related to the high-voltage requirement and the low-power design priority. We designed a high-voltage analog controller of the switch using AMS035HV technology. Its power consumption varies between several hundred nanowatts and a few microwatts, depending on numerous factors - parameters of external vibrations, voltage levels of the charge pump, frequency of the flyback switching, frequency of calibration function, etc. We also implemented on silicon, fabricated and tested a high-voltage switch with a novel low power level-shifting driver. By mounting on discrete components the charge pump and flyback circuit and employing the proposed switch, we characterized the wideband high-voltage operation of the MEMS transducer prototype fabricated alongside this thesis in ESIEE Paris.     Energy harvesting; that is, harvesting small amounts of energy from environmental sources such as solar, air flow or vibrations using small-scale (≈1cm 3 ) devices, offers the prospect of powering portable electronic devices such as GPS receivers and mobile phones, and sensing devices used in remote applications: wireless sensor nodes, without the use of batteries. Numerous studies have shown that power densities of energy harvesting devices can be hundreds of µW; however the literature also reveals that power requirements of many electronic devices are in the mW range. Therefore, a key challenge for the successful deployment of energy harvesting technology remains, in many cases, the provision of adequate power.     Miniaturized Power Electronic Interfaces for Ultra-compact Electromechanical Systems

    Advanced and ultra-compact electromechanical (EM) systems, such as kinetic energy harvesting and microrobotic systems are deemed as enabling solutions to provide efficient energy conversion. One of the most critical challenges in such systems is to develop tiny power electronic interfaces (PEIs) capable of addressing power conditioning between EM devices and energy storage units. This dissertation presents technologies and topological solutions toward fabricating miniaturized PEIs to efficiently regulate erratic power/voltage for kinetic energy harvesting and drive high-voltage actuators for microrobotic systems. High-frequency resonant-switching topologies are introduced as power stages of PEIs that allow small footprint of the circuit without suffering from switching losses. Two types of bridgeless resonant ac-dc converters are first introduced and developed to efficiently convert arbitrary input voltages into a regulated dc output voltage. The proposed topologies provide direct ac-dc power conversion with less number of components, in comparison to other resonant topologies. A 5-mm×6-mm, 100-mg, 2-MHz and 650-mW prototype is fabricated for validation of capability of converting very-low ac voltages into a relatively higher voltage. A resonant gate drive circuit is designed and utilized to further reduce gating losses under high-frequency switching and light-load condition. The closed-loop efficiency reaches higher than 70% across wide range of input voltages and output powers. In a multi-channel energy harvesting system, a multi-input bridgeless resonant ac-dc converter is developed to achieve ac-dc conversion, step up voltage and match optimal impedance. Alternating voltage of each energy harvesting channel is stepped up through the switching LC network and then rectified by a freewheeling diode. The optimal electrical impedance can be adjusted through resonance impedance matching and pulse-frequency-modulation (PFM) control. In addition, a six-input standalone prototype is fabricated to address power conditioning for a six-channel wind panel. Furthermore, the concepts of miniaturization are incorporated in the context of microrobots. In a mobile microrobotic system, conventional bulky power supplies and electronics used to drive electroactive polymer (EAP) actuators are not practical as on-board energy sources for microrobots. A bidirectional single-stage resonant dc-dc step-up converter is introduced and developed to efficiently drive high-voltage EAP actuators. The converter utilizes resonant capacitors and a coupled-inductor as a soft-switched LC network to step up low input voltages. The circuit is capable of generating explicit high-voltage actuation signals, with capability of recovering unused energy from EAP actuators. A 4-mm × 8-mm, 100-mg and 600-mW prototype has been designed and fabricated to drive an in-plane gap-closing electrostatic inchworm motor. Experimental validations have been carried out to verify the circuit’s ability to step up voltage from 2 V to 100 V and generate two 1-kHz, 100-V driving voltages at 2-nF capacitive loads

    Microgenerators are electro-mechanical devices which harvest energy from local environmental from such sources as light, heat and vibrations. These devices are used to extend the life-time of wireless sensor network nodes. Vibration-based microgenerators for biomedical applications are investigated in this thesis. In order to optimise the microgenerator system design, a combined electro-mechanical system simulation model of the complete system is required. In this work, a simulation toolkit (known as ICES) has been developed utilising SPICE. The objective is to accurately model end-to-end microgenerator systems. Case-study simulations of electromagnetic and electrostatic microgenerator systems are presented to verify the operation of the toolkit models. Custom semiconductor devices, previously designed for microgenerator use, have also been modelled so that system design and optimisation of complete microgenerator can be accomplished. An analytical framework has been developed to estimate the maximum system effectiveness of an electrostatic microgenerator operating in constant-charge and constant-voltage modes. The calculated system effectiveness values are plotted with respect to microgenerator sizes for different input excitations. Trends in effectiveness are identified and discussed in detail. It was found that when the electrostatic transducer is interfaced with power processing circuit, the parasitic elements of the circuit are reducing the energy generation ability of the transducer by sharing the charge during separation of the capacitor plates. Also, found that in constant-voltage mode the electrostatic microgenerator has a better effectiveness over a large operating range than constant-charge devices. The ICES toolkit was used to perform time-domain simulation of a range of operating points and the simulation results provide verification of the analytical results

    Energy harvesting technologies and devices from vehicular transit and natural sources on roads for a sustainable transport: state-of-the-art analysis and commercial solutions

    The roads we travel daily are exposed to several energy sources (mechanical load, solar radiation, heat, air movement, etc.), which can be exploited to make common systems and apparatus for roadways (i.e., lighting, video surveillance, and traffic monitoring systems) energetically autonomous. For decades, research groups have developed many technologies able to scavenge energy from the said sources related to roadways: electromagnetism, piezoelectric and triboelectric harvesters for the cars’ stress and vibrations, photovoltaic modules for sunlight, thermoelectric solutions and pyroelectric materials for heat and wind turbines optimized for low-speed winds, such as the ones produced by moving vehicles. Thus, this paper explores the existing technologies for scavenging energy from sources available on roadways, both natural and related to vehicular transit. At first, to contextualize them within the application scenario, the available energy sources and transduction mechanisms were identified and described, arguing the main requirements that must be considered for developing harvesters applicable on roadways. Afterward, an overview of energy harvesting solutions presented in the scientific literature to recover energy from roadways is introduced, classifying them according to the transduction method (i.e., piezoelectric, triboelectric, electromagnetic, photovoltaic, etc.) and proposed system architecture. Later, a survey of commercial systems available on the market for scavenging energy from roadways is introduced, focusing on their architecture, performance, and installation methods. Lastly, comparative analyses are offered for each device category (i.e., scientific works and commercial products), providing insights to identify the most promising solutions and technologies for developing future self-sustainable smart roads
