Deep Tree Transductions - A Short Survey
The paper surveys recent extensions of the Long-Short Term Memory networks to
handle tree structures from the perspective of learning non-trivial forms of
isomorph structured transductions. It provides a discussion of modern TreeLSTM
models, showing the effect of the bias induced by the direction of tree
processing. An empirical analysis is performed on real-world benchmarks,
highlighting how there is no single model adequate to effectively approach all
transduction problems.Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of the 2019 INNS Big Data and Deep

Generating Natural Language from Linked Data:Unsupervised template extraction
We propose an architecture for generating natural language from Linked Data that automatically learns sentence templates and statistical document planning from parallel RDF datasets and text. We have built a proof-of-concept system (LOD-DEF) trained on un-annotated text from the Simple English Wikipedia and RDF triples from DBpedia, focusing exclusively on factual, non-temporal information. The goal of the system is to generate short descriptions, equivalent to Wikipedia stubs, of entities found in Linked Datasets. We have evaluated the LOD-DEF system against a simple generate-from-triples baseline and human-generated output. In evaluation by humans, LOD-DEF significantly outperforms the baseline on two of three measures: non-redundancy and structure and coherence.
MedTxting: learning based and knowledge rich SMS-style medical text contraction
In mobile health (M-health), Short Message Service (SMS) has shown to improve disease related self-management and health service outcomes, leading to enhanced patient care. However, the hard limit on character size for each message limits the full value of exploring SMS communication in health care practices. To overcome this problem and improve the efficiency of clinical workflow, we developed an innovative system, MedTxting (available at http://medtxting.askhermes.org), which is a learning-based but knowledge-rich system that compresses medical texts in a SMS style. Evaluations on clinical questions and discharge summary narratives show that MedTxting can effectively compress medical texts with reasonable readability and noticeable size reduction. Findings in this work reveal potentials of MedTxting to the clinical settings, allowing for real-time and cost-effective communication, such as patient condition reporting, medication consulting, physicians connecting to share expertise to improve point of care
Lexico-syntactic Text Simplification And Compression With Typed Dependencies
We describe two systems for text simplification using typed dependency structures, one that performs lexical and syntactic simplification, and another that performs sentence compression optimised to satisfy global text constraints such as lexical density, the ratio of difficult words, and text length. We report a substantial evaluation that demonstrates the superiority of our systems, individually and in combination, over the state of the art, and also report a comprehension based evaluation of contemporary automatic text simplification systems with target non-native readers
Semantics-based Question Generation and Implementation
This paper presents a question generation system based on the approach of semantic rewriting. The state-of-the-art deep linguistic parsing and generation tools are employed to convert (back and forth) between the natural language sentences and their meaning representations in the form of Minimal Recursion Semantics (MRS). By carefully operating on the semantic structures, we show a principled way of generating questions without ad-hoc manipulation of the syntactic structures. Based on the (partial) understanding of the sentence meaning, the system generates questions which are semantically grounded and purposeful. And with the support of deep linguistic grammars, the grammaticality of the generation results is warranted. Further, with a specialized ranking model, the linguistic realizations from the general purpose generation model are further refined for our the question generation task. The evaluation results from QGSTEC2010 show promising prospects of the proposed approach
