    Applying engineering feedback analysis tools to climate dynamics

    The application of feedback analysis tools from engineering control theory to problems in climate dynamics is discussed through two examples. First, the feedback coupling between the thermohaline circulation and wind-driven circulation in the North Atlantic Ocean is analyzed with a relatively simple model, in order to better understand the coupled system dynamics. The simulation behavior is compared with analysis using root locus (in the linear regime) and describing functions (to predict limit cycle amplitude). The second example does not directly involve feedback, but rather uses simulation-based identification of low-order dynamics to understand parameter sensitivity in a model of El Nino/Southern Oscillation dynamics. The eigenvalue and eigenvector sensitivity can be used both to better understand physics and to tune more complex models. Finally, additional applications are discussed where control tools may be relevant to understand existing feedbacks in the climate system, or even to introduce new ones

    Mapping customer needs to engineering characteristics: an aerospace perspective for conceptual design

    Designing complex engineering systems, such as an aircraft or an aero-engine, is immensely challenging. Formal Systems Engineering (SE) practices are widely used in the aerospace industry throughout the overall design process to minimise the overall design effort, corrective re-work, and ultimately overall development and manufacturing costs. Incorporating the needs and requirements from customers and other stakeholders into the conceptual and early design process is vital for the success and viability of any development programme. This paper presents a formal methodology, the Value-Driven Design (VDD) methodology that has been developed for collaborative and iterative use in the Extended Enterprise (EE) within the aerospace industry, and that has been applied using the Concept Design Analysis (CODA) method to map captured Customer Needs (CNs) into Engineering Characteristics (ECs) and to model an overall ‘design merit’ metric to be used in design assessments, sensitivity analyses, and engineering design optimisation studies.     Use of Evolutionary Polynomial Regression (EPR) for Prediction of Total Sediment Load of Malaysian Rivers

    This study investigates the use of Evolutionary Polynomial Regression (EPR) for predicting the total sediment load of Malaysian rivers. EPR is a data-driven modelling hybrid technique, based on evolutionary computing, that has been recently used successfully in solving many problems in civil engineering. In order to apply the method for modelling the total sediment of Malaysian rivers, an extensive database obtained from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID),Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment, Malaysia was sought, and unrestricted access was granted. A robustness study was performed in order to confirm the generalisation ability of the developed EPR model, and a sensitivity analysis was also conducted to determine the relative importance of model inputs. The results obtained from the EPR model were compared with those obtained from six other available sediment load prediction models. The performance of the EPR model demonstrates its predictive capability and generalisation ability to solve highly nonlinear problems of river engineering applications, such as sediment. Moreover, the EPR model produced reasonably improved results compared to those obtained from the other available sediment load methods

    The economic-driven evaluation of information technology (IT) has become an important instrument in the management of IT projects. Numerous approaches have been developed to quantify the costs of an IT investment and its assumed profit, to evaluate its impact on business process performance, and to analyze the role of IT regarding the achievement of enterprise objectives. This paper discusses approaches for evaluating IT from an economic-driven perspective. Our comparison is based on a framework distinguishing between classification criteria and evaluation criteria. The former allow for the categorization of evaluation approaches based on their similarities and differences. The latter, by contrast, represent attributes that allow to evaluate the discussed approaches. Finally, we give an example of a typical economic-driven IT evaluation

    Data-driven online temperature compensation for robust field-oriented torque-controlled induction machines

    Squirrel-cage induction machines (IMs) with indirect field-oriented control are widely used in industry and are frequently chosen for their accurate and dynamic torque control. During operation, however, temperature rises leading to changes in machine parameters. The rotor resistance, in particular, alters, affecting the accuracy of the torque control. The authors investigated the effect of a rotor resistance parameter mismatch in the control algorithm on the angular rotor flux misalignment and the subsequent deviation of stator currents and motor torque from their setpoints. Hence, an online, data-driven torque compensation to eliminate the temperature effect is proposed to enable robust torque-controlled IMs. A model-based analysis and experimental mapping of the temperature effect on motor torque is presented. A temperature-torque lookup-table is subsequently implemented within the control algorithm demonstrating the ability to reduce the detrimental effect of temperature on torque control. Experimental results on a 5.5 kW squirrel-cage induction motor show that the proposed data-driven online temperature compensation method is able to reduce torque mismatch when compared to having no temperature compensation. Up to 17% torque mismatch is reduced at nominal torque and even up to 23% at torque setpoints that are lower than 20% of the nominal torque. A limited torque error of <1% remains in a broad operating range
