Using Tags for Measuring the Semantic Similarity of Users to Enhance Collaborative Filtering Recommender Systems
Recent years have seen a significant growth in social tagging systems, which allow users to use their own generated tags to organize, categorize, describe and search digital content on social media. The growing popularity of tagging systems is leading to an increasing need for automatic generation of recommended items for users. Much previous research focuses on incorporating recommender techniques in social tagging systems to support the suggestion of suitable tags for annotating related items. Collaborative filtering is one such technique. The most critical task in collaborative filtering is finding related users with similar preferences, i.e., “liked-minded” users. Despite the popularity of collaborative filtering, it still suffers from certain limitations in relation to “cold-start” users, for example, where often there are insufficient preferences to make recommendations. Moreover, there is the data-sparsity problem, where there is limited user feedback data to identify similarities in users’ interests because there is no intersection between users’ transactional data a situation which also results in degraded recommendation quality. For this reason, in this paper we present a new collaborative filtering approach based on users’ semantic tags, which calculates the similarity between users by discovering the semantic spaces in their posted tags. We believe that this approach better reflects the semantic similarity between users according to their tagging perspectives and consequently improves recommendations through the identification of semantically related items for each user. Our experiment on a real-life dataset shows that the proposed approach outperforms the traditional user-based collaborative filtering approach in terms of improving the quality of recommendations

Statistical Semantic Classification of Crisis Information
The rise of social media as an information channel during crisis has become key to community response. However, existing crisis awareness applications, often struggle to identify relevant information among the high volume of data that is generated over social platforms. A wide range of statistical features and machine learning methods have been researched in recent years to automatically classify this information. In this paper we aim to complement previous studies by exploring the use of semantics as additional features to identify relevant crisis in- formation. Our assumption is that entities and concepts tend to have a more consistent correlation with relevant and irrelevant information, and therefore can enhance the discrimination power of classifiers. Our results, so far, show that some classification improvements can be obtained when using semantic features, reaching +2.51% when the classifier is applied to a new crisis event (i.e., not in training set)
Semantic modelling of user interests based on cross-folksonomy analysis
The continued increase in Web usage, in particular participation in folksonomies, reveals a trend towards a more dynamic and interactive Web where individuals can organise and share resources. Tagging has emerged as the de-facto standard for the organisation of such resources, providing a versatile and reactive knowledge management mechanism that users find easy to use and understand. It is common nowadays for users to have multiple profiles in various folksonomies, thus distributing their tagging activities. In this paper, we present a method for the automatic consolidation of user profiles across two popular social networking sites, and subsequent semantic modelling of their interests utilising Wikipedia as a multi-domain model. We evaluate how much can be learned from such sites, and in which domains the knowledge acquired is focussed. Discovering the Impact of Knowledge in Recommender Systems: A Comparative Study
Recommender systems engage user profiles and appropriate filtering techniques
to assist users in finding more relevant information over the large volume of
information. User profiles play an important role in the success of
recommendation process since they model and represent the actual user needs.
However, a comprehensive literature review of recommender systems has
demonstrated no concrete study on the role and impact of knowledge in user
profiling and filtering approache. In this paper, we review the most prominent
recommender systems in the literature and examine the impression of knowledge
extracted from different sources. We then come up with this finding that
semantic information from the user context has substantial impact on the
performance of knowledge based recommender systems. Finally, some new clues for

Enriching ontological user profiles with tagging history for multi-domain recommendations
Many advanced recommendation frameworks employ ontologies of various complexities to model individuals and items, providing a mechanism for the expression of user interests and the representation of item attributes. As a result, complex matching techniques can be applied to support individuals in the discovery of items according to explicit and implicit user preferences. Recently, the rapid adoption of Web2.0, and the proliferation of social networking sites, has resulted in more and more users providing an increasing amount of information about themselves that could be exploited for recommendation purposes. However, the unification of personal information with ontologies using the contemporary knowledge representation methods often associated with Web2.0 applications, such as community tagging, is a non-trivial task. In this paper, we propose a method for the unification of tags with ontologies by grounding tags to a shared representation in the form of Wordnet and Wikipedia. We incorporate individuals' tagging history into their ontological profiles by matching tags with ontology concepts. This approach is preliminary evaluated by extending an existing news recommendation system with user tagging histories harvested from popular social networking sites
Enhancing Twitter Data Analysis with Simple Semantic Filtering: Example in Tracking Influenza-Like Illnesses
Systems that exploit publicly available user generated content such as
Twitter messages have been successful in tracking seasonal influenza. We
developed a novel filtering method for Influenza-Like-Illnesses (ILI)-related
messages using 587 million messages from Twitter micro-blogs. We first filtered
messages based on syndrome keywords from the BioCaster Ontology, an extant
knowledge model of laymen's terms. We then filtered the messages according to
semantic features such as negation, hashtags, emoticons, humor and geography.
The data covered 36 weeks for the US 2009 influenza season from 30th August
2009 to 8th May 2010. Results showed that our system achieved the highest
Pearson correlation coefficient of 98.46% (p-value<2.2e-16), an improvement of
3.98% over the previous state-of-the-art method. The results indicate that
simple NLP-based enhancements to existing approaches to mine Twitter data can

Computing word-of-mouth trust relationships in social networks from Semantic Web and Web 2.0 data sources
Social networks can serve as both a rich source of new information and as a filter to identify the information most relevant to our specific needs. In this paper we present a methodology and algorithms that, by exploiting existing Semantic Web and Web2.0 data sources, help individuals identify who in their social network knows what, and who is the most trustworthy source of information on that topic. Our approach improves upon previous work in a number of ways, such as incorporating topic-specific rather than global trust metrics. This is achieved by generating topic experience profiles for each network member, based on data from Revyu and del.icio.us, to indicate who knows what. Identification of the most trustworthy sources is enabled by a rich trust model of information and recommendation seeking in social networks. Reviews and ratings created on Revyu provide source data for algorithms that generate topic expertise and person to person affinity metrics. Combining these metrics, we are implementing a user-oriented application for searching and automated ranking of information sources within social networks
Ranking News-Quality Multimedia
News editors need to find the photos that best illustrate a news piece and
fulfill news-media quality standards, while being pressed to also find the most
recent photos of live events. Recently, it became common to use social-media
content in the context of news media for its unique value in terms of immediacy
and quality. Consequently, the amount of images to be considered and filtered
through is now too much to be handled by a person. To aid the news editor in
this process, we propose a framework designed to deliver high-quality,
news-press type photos to the user. The framework, composed of two parts, is
based on a ranking algorithm tuned to rank professional media highly and a
visual SPAM detection module designed to filter-out low-quality media. The core
ranking algorithm is leveraged by aesthetic, social and deep-learning semantic
features. Evaluation showed that the proposed framework is effective at finding
high-quality photos (true-positive rate) achieving a retrieval MAP of 64.5% and
