    A Secure and User Privacy-Preserving Searching Protocol for Peer-to-Peer Networks

    File sharing peer-to-peer networks have become quite popular of late as a new paradigm for information exchange among large number of users in the Internet. However, these networks suffer from several problems such as fake content distribution, free riding, whitewashing, poor search scalability, lack of a robust trust model and absence of user privacy protection mechanism. In this paper, a secure and efficient searching scheme for peer-to-peer networks has been proposed that utilizes topology adaptation by constructing an overlay of trusted peers where the neighbors are selected based on their trust ratings and content similarities. While increasing the search efficiency by intelligently exploiting the formation of semantic community structures among the trustworthy peers, the scheme provides a highly reliable module for protecting the privacy of the users and data in the network. Simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed scheme provides efficient searching to good peers while penalizing the malicious peers by increasing their search times

    A schema-based P2P network to enable publish-subscribe for multimedia content in open hypermedia systems

    Open Hypermedia Systems (OHS) aim to provide efficient dissemination, adaptation and integration of hyperlinked multimedia resources. Content available in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks could add significant value to OHS provided that challenges for efficient discovery and prompt delivery of rich and up-to-date content are successfully addressed. This paper proposes an architecture that enables the operation of OHS over a P2P overlay network of OHS servers based on semantic annotation of (a) peer OHS servers and of (b) multimedia resources that can be obtained through the link services of the OHS. The architecture provides efficient resource discovery. Semantic query-based subscriptions over this P2P network can enable access to up-to-date content, while caching at certain peers enables prompt delivery of multimedia content. Advanced query resolution techniques are employed to match different parts of subscription queries (subqueries). These subscriptions can be shared among different interested peers, thus increasing the efficiency of multimedia content dissemination

    Large scale homophily analysis in twitter using a twixonomy

    In this paper we perform a large-scale homophily analysis on Twitter using a hierarchical representation of users' interests which we call a Twixonomy. In order to build a population, community, or single-user Twixonomy we first associate "topical" friends in users' friendship lists (i.e. friends representing an interest rather than a social relation between peers) with Wikipedia categories. A wordsense disambiguation algorithm is used to select the appropriate wikipage for each topical friend. Starting from the set of wikipages representing "primitive" interests, we extract all paths connecting these pages with topmost Wikipedia category nodes, and we then prune the resulting graph G efficiently so as to induce a direct acyclic graph. This graph is the Twixonomy. Then, to analyze homophily, we compare different methods to detect communities in a peer friends Twitter network, and then for each community we compute the degree of homophily on the basis of a measure of pairwise semantic similarity. We show that the Twixonomy provides a means for describing users' interests in a compact and readable way and allows for a fine-grained homophily analysis. Furthermore, we show that midlow level categories in the Twixonomy represent the best balance between informativeness and compactness of the representation

    Peer - Mediated Distributed Knowledge Management

    Distributed Knowledge Management is an approach to knowledge management based on the principle that the multiplicity (and heterogeneity) of perspectives within complex organizations is not be viewed as an obstacle to knowledge exploitation, but rather as an opportunity that can foster innovation and creativity. Despite a wide agreement on this principle, most current KM systems are based on the idea that all perspectival aspects of knowledge should be eliminated in favor of an objective and general representation of knowledge. In this paper we propose a peer-to-peer architecture (called KEx), which embodies the principle above in a quite straightforward way: (i) each peer (called a K-peer) provides all the services needed to create and organize "local" knowledge from an individual's or a group's perspective, and (ii) social structures and protocols of meaning negotiation are introduced to achieve semantic coordination among autonomous peers (e.g., when searching documents from other K-peers). A first version of the system, called KEx, is imple-mented as a knowledge exchange level on top of JXTA

    The integration of grid and peer-to-peer to support scientific collaboration

    There have been a number of e-Science projects which address the issues of collaboration within and between scientific communities. Most effort to date focussed on the building of the Grid infrastructure to enable the sharing of huge volume of computational and data resources. The ‘portal’ approach has been used by some to bring the power of grid computing to the desk top of individual researchers. However, collaborative activities within a scientific community are not only confined to the sharing of data or computational intensive resources. There are other forms of sharing which can be better supported by other forms of architecture. In order to provide a more holistic support to a scientific community, this paper proposes a hybrid architecture, which integrates Grid and peer-to-peer technologies using Service Oriented Architecture. This platform will then be used for a semantic architecture which captures characteristics of the data, functional and process requirements for a range of collaborative activities. A combustion chemistry research community is being used as a case study
