THE USE OF COHESIVE DEVICES IN RELATION TO THE QUALITY OF THE STUDENTSâ ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING
The ability to compose an argumentative text is important for ESL and EFL learners.
In terms of the communicative nature of writing, cohesion is regarded as an essential textual
component, not only to create organized text but also to the comprehensiveness of the text.
Therefore, the use of cohesive devices is really important. Based on Halliday and Hasan
Cohesion theory (1976)this study is intended to investigate the use of cohesive devices and
also the relationship between the frequency of cohesive devices using and the quality of
argumentative writing. An analysis of 30 studentsâ argumentative writing showed that the
students were familiar with various cohesive devices and used them in their writing. Among
the cohesive devices, reference had the largest percentage of the total number cohesive
devices, followed by lexical devices and conjunction devices. Furthermore, it was found that
there was no significant relationship between the number of cohesive devi ces used and the
quality of writing. The findings of the study have some important implications for EFL writing
teachers and learners
The impact on language teachers of trends in the literature on language teaching and learning: A questionnaire-based study involving teachers of English as an additional language
I report here on specific aspects of a survey of a sample of 93 teachers of English as an additional language from five different countries who completed a questionnaire that included questions relating to objectives specification and the inclusion of coherence, cohesion and genre in their teaching. The data collected suggest that although literature on language teaching and learning appears to have had some impact on the beliefs and practices of these language teachers, that impact has, in general, been a superficial one
Knowledge society arguments revisited in the semantic technologies era
In the light of high profile governmental and international efforts to realise the knowledge society, I review the arguments made for and against it from a technology standpoint. I focus on advanced knowledge technologies with applications on a large scale and in open- ended environments like the World Wide Web and its ambitious extension, the Semantic Web. I argue for a greater role of social networks in a knowledge society and I explore the recent developments in mechanised trust, knowledge certification, and speculate on their blending with traditional societal institutions. These form the basis of a sketched roadmap for enabling technologies for a knowledge society
