    Supporting professional learning in a massive open online course

    Professional learning, combining formal and on the job learning, is important for the development and maintenance of expertise in the modern workplace. To integrate formal and informal learning, professionals have to have good self-regulatory ability. Formal learning opportunities are opening up through massive open online courses (MOOCs), providing free and flexible access to formal education for millions of learners worldwide. MOOCs present a potentially useful mechanism for supporting and enabling professional learning, allowing opportunities to link formal and informal learning. However, there is limited understanding of their effectiveness as professional learning environments. Using self-regulated learning as a theoretical base, this study investigated the learning behaviours of health professionals within Fundamentals of Clinical Trials, a MOOC offered by edX. Thirty-five semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed to explore how the design of this MOOC supported professional learning to occur. The study highlights a mismatch between learning intentions and learning behaviour of professional learners in this course. While the learners are motivated to participate by specific role challenges, their learning effort is ultimately focused on completing course tasks and assignments. The study found little evidence of professional learners routinely relating the course content to their job role or work tasks, and little impact of the course on practice. This study adds to the overall understanding of learning in MOOCs and provides additional empirical data to a nascent research field.     Predicting Learners' Success in a Self-paced MOOC Through Sequence Patterns of Self-regulated Learning

    Proceeding of: 13th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning, EC-TEL 2018, Leeds, UK, September 3-5, 2018.In the past years, predictive models in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have focused on forecasting learners' success through their grades. The prediction of these grades is useful to identify problems that might lead to dropouts. However, most models in prior work predict categorical and continuous variables using low-level data. This paper contributes to extend current predictive models in the literature by considering coarse-grained variables related to Self-Regulated Learning (SRL). That is, using learners' self-reported SRL strategies and MOOC activity sequence patterns as predictors. Lineal and logistic regression modelling were used as a first approach of prediction with data collected from N = 2,035 learners who took a self-paced MOOC in Coursera. We identified two groups of learners: (1) Comprehensive, who follow the course path designed by the teacher; and (2) Targeting, who seek for the information required to pass assessments. For both type of learners, we found a group of variables as the most predictive: (1) the self-reported SRL strategies 'goal setting', 'strategic planning', 'elaboration' and 'help seeking'; (2) the activity sequences patterns 'only assessment', 'complete a video-lecture and try an assessment', 'explore the content' and 'try an assessment followed by a video-lecture'; and (3) learners' prior experience, together with the self-reported interest in course assessments, and the number of active days and time spent in the platform.     Metaliteracy as Pedagogical Framework for Learner-Centered Design in Three MOOC Platforms: Connectivist, Coursera and Canvas

    This article examines metaliteracy as a pedagogical model that leverages the assets of MOOC platforms to enhance self-regulated and self-empowered learning. Between 2013 and 2015, a collaborative teaching team within the State University of New York (SUNY) developed three MOOCs on three different platforms—connectivist, Coursera and Canvas—to engage with learners about metaliteracy. As a reframing of information literacy, metaliteracy envisions the learner as an active and metacognitive producer of digital information in online communities and social media environments (Mackey & Jacobson, 2011; 2014). This team of educators, which constitutes the core of the Metaliteracy Learning Collaborative, used metaliteracy as a lens for applied teaching and learning strategies in the development of a cMOOC and two xMOOCs. The metaliteracy MOOCs pushed against the dominant trends of lecture-based, automated MOOC design towards a more learner-centered pedagogy that aligns with key components of metaliteracy

    Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have taken higher educational establishments of the western world by storm with large amounts of funding diverted into developing and delivering a wide variety of online, massparticipation courses. Many claims have been made relating to their potential for providing free, high quality education to everyone, no matter what their situation or geographical position. In practice however, there is little evidence as yet of the desired democratisation of education, with lack of support for students, an absence of pedagogy and very high drop out rates. This project is concerned with MOOC evaluation. It aims to understand the reasons why students drop out and to implement and assess the effectiveness of measures to address specific areas relating to attrition. The theoretical framework of this study is applying design science research methodology (DSRM) in creating and developing a learning tool as an instrument for the research investigation. My research goal is on designing, implementing and evaluating solutions to mitigate these problems. Enabled by developing network and Cloud technologies, MOOCs are credited with the potential to provide free, open, high quality (yet low cost) education for large classes. However, current efforts are lacking in the necessary pedagogy and framework necessary to provide suitable materials for different learners and supporting individuals in their different learning paths. This is one of the major contributory factors to the extremely high drop out rates currently observed.     MOOCs or Massive Online Open Courses based on Open Educational Resources (OER) might be one of the most versatile ways to offer access to quality education, especially for those residing in far or disadvantaged areas. This article analyzes the state of the art on MOOCs, exploring open research questions and setting interesting topics and goals for further research.     Engaged learning in MOOCs: a study using the UK Engagement Survey

    This study sets out to answer the question: how can we know what learning is taking place in MOOCs? From this starting point, the study then looks to identify MOOCs’ potential for future use in HE? Using a specially-adapted version of the HEA’s UK Engagement Survey (UKES) 2014, the research team at the University of Southampton asked participants who had completed one of two MOOCs delivered through the FutureLearn platform and designed and run at the university about their experiences as learners and their engagement with their respective MOOC. The results also show that both of the MOOCs were successful in enabling many participants to feel engaged in intellectual endeavours such as forming new understandings, making connections with previous knowledge and experience, and exploring knowledge actively, creatively and critically. In response to the open access approach – in which no one taking part in a MOOC is required to have a minimum level of previous educational achievement - the report shows that persistent learners engaged, regardless of prior educational attainment
