Robust Temporally Coherent Laplacian Protrusion Segmentation of 3D Articulated Bodies
In motion analysis and understanding it is important to be able to fit a
suitable model or structure to the temporal series of observed data, in order
to describe motion patterns in a compact way, and to discriminate between them.
In an unsupervised context, i.e., no prior model of the moving object(s) is
available, such a structure has to be learned from the data in a bottom-up
fashion. In recent times, volumetric approaches in which the motion is captured
from a number of cameras and a voxel-set representation of the body is built
from the camera views, have gained ground due to attractive features such as
inherent view-invariance and robustness to occlusions. Automatic, unsupervised
segmentation of moving bodies along entire sequences, in a temporally-coherent
and robust way, has the potential to provide a means of constructing a
bottom-up model of the moving body, and track motion cues that may be later
exploited for motion classification. Spectral methods such as locally linear
embedding (LLE) can be useful in this context, as they preserve "protrusions",
i.e., high-curvature regions of the 3D volume, of articulated shapes, while
improving their separation in a lower dimensional space, making them in this
way easier to cluster. In this paper we therefore propose a spectral approach
to unsupervised and temporally-coherent body-protrusion segmentation along time
sequences. Volumetric shapes are clustered in an embedding space, clusters are
propagated in time to ensure coherence, and merged or split to accommodate
changes in the body's topology. Experiments on both synthetic and real
sequences of dense voxel-set data are shown. This supports the ability of the
proposed method to cluster body-parts consistently over time in a totally
unsupervised fashion, its robustness to sampling density and shape quality, and

Randomized hybrid linear modeling by local best-fit flats
The hybrid linear modeling problem is to identify a set of d-dimensional
affine sets in a D-dimensional Euclidean space. It arises, for example, in
object tracking and structure from motion. The hybrid linear model can be
considered as the second simplest (behind linear) manifold model of data. In
this paper we will present a very simple geometric method for hybrid linear
modeling based on selecting a set of local best fit flats that minimize a
global l1 error measure. The size of the local neighborhoods is determined
automatically by the Jones' l2 beta numbers; it is proven under certain
geometric conditions that good local neighborhoods exist and are found by our
method. We also demonstrate how to use this algorithm for fast determination of
the number of affine subspaces. We give extensive experimental evidence
demonstrating the state of the art accuracy and speed of the algorithm on

Median K-flats for hybrid linear modeling with many outliers
We describe the Median K-Flats (MKF) algorithm, a simple online method for
hybrid linear modeling, i.e., for approximating data by a mixture of flats.
This algorithm simultaneously partitions the data into clusters while finding
their corresponding best approximating l1 d-flats, so that the cumulative l1
error is minimized. The current implementation restricts d-flats to be
d-dimensional linear subspaces. It requires a negligible amount of storage, and
its complexity, when modeling data consisting of N points in D-dimensional
Euclidean space with K d-dimensional linear subspaces, is of order O(n K d D+n
d^2 D), where n is the number of iterations required for convergence
(empirically on the order of 10^4). Since it is an online algorithm, data can
be supplied to it incrementally and it can incrementally produce the
corresponding output. The performance of the algorithm is carefully evaluated
using synthetic and real data
Global and local sparse subspace optimization for motion segmentation
In this paper, we propose a new framework for segmenting feature-based moving objects under affine subspace model. Since the feature trajectories in practice are high-dimensional and contain a lot of noise, we firstly apply the sparse PCA to represent the original trajectories with a low-dimensional global subspace, which consists of the orthogonal sparse principal vectors. Subsequently, the local subspace separation will be achieved via automatically searching the sparse representation of the nearest neighbors for each projected data. In order to refine the local subspace estimation result, we propose an error estimation to encourage the projected data that span a same local subspace to be clustered together. In the end, the segmentation of different motions is achieved through the spectral clustering on an affinity matrix, which is constructed with both the error estimation and sparse neighbors optimization. We test our method extensively and compare it with state-of-the-art methods on the Hopkins 155 dataset. The results show that our method is comparable with the other motion segmentation methods, and in many cases exceed them in terms of precision and computation time
