The Green New Deal and Evolution of Institutional Environments for Multifunctionality: the case of Certified Organic Agriculture in Brazil and China

The Global Green New Deal (GGND) aim to green the global economy across a range of sectors including agriculture, to pursue future prosperity and job creation, while at the same time addressing social and environmental challenges. Taking its point of departure in some of the institutional changes envisioned in GGND publications, the paper proceeds to present results of the authors’ current research, within a research programme on institutional dimensions of the current globalization of certified organic agriculture. Case study results from Brazil and China are used to illustrate how institutional environments for organic agriculture differ between nations and to provide a basis for discussing the potential of organic certification to transform global agriculture towards higher overall levels of sustainability. The paper concludes linking the institutional analysis of the GGND and the findings of the presented cases to a broader analysis and discussion on the state of art of institutional environments for multifunctional agriculture

Secure Cloud-Edge Deployments, with Trust

Assessing the security level of IoT applications to be deployed to heterogeneous Cloud-Edge infrastructures operated by different providers is a non-trivial task. In this article, we present a methodology that permits to express security requirements for IoT applications, as well as infrastructure security capabilities, in a simple and declarative manner, and to automatically obtain an explainable assessment of the security level of the possible application deployments. The methodology also considers the impact of trust relations among different stakeholders using or managing Cloud-Edge infrastructures. A lifelike example is used to showcase the prototyped implementation of the methodology

Expanding the UK Secure by Design proposal for a usable consumer-focused IoT security label

No person whom has any knowledge of security in the Internet of Things (IoT) would claim the current landscape is desirable, as exceedingly poor security of devices is routinely exhibited in an ecosystem experiencing exponential growth of devices. If these devices follow past trends in Cyber Security, it is not unreasonable to assume that without intervention another decade of exponentially growing costs attributed to Cyber Crime may lay ahead. After the failure of the voluntary approach to IoT Security, works are now being taken to legislate a minimum security standard.Building from existing proposals, this paper outlines real improvements that could be made to current ongoing works, with the intention of providing incentive for manufacturers to improve device security in the IoT sector and reduce the timeline for routine deployment of secured devices.Incorporating strategies developed in other industries, as well as security requirements from across international borders, a point-of-sale user focused label is proposed, which can be easily interpreted by non-technical users. Intending to provoke curiosity and fully reassure the end-user, a two-layer system is chosen which allows the conveyance of more detailed information than could fit on a physical label

In the overall negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), the digital chapter appears to be growing in importance. This is due to several factors, including the recent Datagate scandal that undermined trust between the negotiating parties and led to calls to suspend the US-EU Safe Harbour agreement as well as the furious debate currently ongoing in both legal systems on key issues such as policies to encourage broadband infrastructure deployment, network neutrality policies and the application of competition policy in cyberspace. This paper explores the current divergences between the two legal systems on these key issues and discusses possible scenarios for the ultimate agreement to be reached in the TTIP: from a basic, minimal agreement (which would essentially include e-labelling and e-accessibility measures) to more ambitious scenarios on network neutrality, competition rules, privacy and interoperability measures
