Attacks, vulnerabilities and security requirements in smart metering networks
A smart meter is one of the core components in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) that is responsible for providing effective control and monitor of electrical energy consumptions. The multifunction tasks that a smart meter carries out such as facilitating two-way communication between utility providers and consumers, managing metering data, delivering anomalies reports, analyzing fault and power quality, simply show that there are huge amount of data exchange in smart metering networks (SMNs). These data are prone to security threats due to high dependability of SMNs on Internet-based communication, which is highly insecure. Therefore, there is a need to identify all possible security threats over this network and propose suitable countermeasures for securing the communication between smart meters and utility provider office. This paper studies the architecture of the smart grid communication networks, focuses on smart metering networks and discusses how such networks can be vulnerable to security attacks. This paper also presents current mechanisms that have been used to secure the smart metering networks from specific type of attacks in SMNs. Moreover, we highlight several open issues related to the security and privacy of SMNs which we anticipate could serve as baseline for future research directions

Toward unified security and privacy protection for smart meter networks
The management of security and privacy protection mechanisms is one fundamental issue of future smart grid and metering networks. Designing effective and economic measures is a non-trivial task due to a) the large number of system requirements and b) the uncertainty over how the system functionalities are going to be specified and evolve. The paper explores a unified approach for addressing security and privacy of smart metering systems. In the process, we present a unified framework that entails the analysis and synthesis of security solutions associated with closely interrelated components of a typical smart metering system. Ultimately, the proposed framework can be used as a guideline for embedding cross-domain security and privacy solutions into smart grid communication systems
Evaluation of Cybersecurity Threats on Smart Metering System
Smart metering has emerged as the next-generation of energy distribution, consumption, and monitoring systems via the convergence of power engineering and information and communication technology (ICT) integration otherwise known as smart grid systems. While the innovation is advancing the future power generation, distribution, consumption monitoring and information delivery, the success of the platform is positively correlated to the thriving integration of technologies upon which the system is built. Nonetheless, the rising trend of cybersecurity attacks on cyber infrastructure and its dependent systems coupled with the system’s inherent vulnerabilities present a source of concern not only to the vendors but also the consumers. These security concerns need to be addressed in order to increase consumer confidence so as to ensure greatest adoption and success of smart metering. In this paper, we present a functional communication architecture of the smart metering system. Following that, we demonstrate and discuss the taxonomy of smart metering common vulnerabilities exposure, upon which sophisticated threats can capitalize. We then introduce countermeasure techniques, whose integration is considered pivotal for achieving security protection against existing and future sophisticated attacks on smart metering systems
Smart Metering Communication Protocols and Performance Under Cyber Security Vulnerabilities
The communication process is the key that characterizes the modern concept of smart grid, a new technology that introduced a “two-way communication” in energy measurement systems and can be best represented through the smart meters. Hence, the goal of smart metering communication is to ensure a secure and reliable transmission of information that can only be accessed by end users and energy supplying companies. With the goal of improving the information security in smart energy grids, the research presented in this work focused on studying different advanced metering infrastructure communication protocols and, it showcases a series of experiments performed on smart meters to evaluate their defenses against a set of cybersecurity attacks. A small-scale simulation of a smart metering system was performed in the cybersecurity laboratory in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley; and specialized software applications were developed to retrieve data in real time. Our experimental results demonstrated that security attacks have a considerable impact on the communication aspect of smart meters. This could help making smart meter manufacturing companies aware of the dangers caused by cyber-attacks and develop robust defenses against security attacks and enhance overall efficiency and reliability of the smart grid power delivery
Smart meter security: Vulnerabilities, threat impacts, and countermeasures
© Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is the aggregation of smart meters, communications networks, and data management systems that are tailored to meet the efficient integration of renewable energy resources. The more complex features and soundless functionalities the AMI is enhanced with, the more cyber security concerns are raised and must be taken into consideration. It is imperative to assure consumer’s privacy and security to guarantee the proliferation of rolling out smart metering infrastructure. This research paper analyzes AMI from security perspectives; it discusses the possible vulnerabilities associated with different attack surfaces in the smart meter, their security and threat implications, and finally it recommends proper security controls and countermeasures. The research findings draw the foundation upon which robust security by design approach is geared for the deployment of the AMI in the future
Security Challenges in Smart-Grid Metering and Control Systems
The smart grid is a next-generation power system that is increasingly attracting the attention of government, industry, and academia. It is an upgraded electricity network that depends on two-way digital communications between supplier and consumer that in turn give support to intelligent metering and monitoring systems. Considering that energy utilities play an increasingly important role in our daily life, smart-grid technology introduces new security challenges that must be addressed. Deploying a smart grid without adequate security might result in serious consequences such as grid instability, utility fraud, and loss of user information and energy-consumption data. Due to the heterogeneous communication architecture of smart grids, it is quite a challenge to design sophisticated and robust security mechanisms that can be easily deployed to protect communications among different layers of the smart grid-infrastructure. In this article, we focus on the communication-security aspect of a smart-grid metering and control system from the perspective of cryptographic techniques, and we discuss different mechanisms to enhance cybersecurity of the emerging smart grid. We aim to provide a comprehensive vulnerability analysis as well as novel insights on the cybersecurity of a smart grid
Key Management Systems for Smart Grid Advanced Metering Infrastructure: A Survey
Smart Grids are evolving as the next generation power systems that involve
changes in the traditional ways of generation, transmission and distribution of
power. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is one of the key components in
smart grids. An AMI comprises of systems and networks, that collects and
analyzes data received from smart meters. In addition, AMI also provides
intelligent management of various power-related applications and services based
on the data collected from smart meters. Thus, AMI plays a significant role in
the smooth functioning of smart grids.
AMI is a privileged target for security attacks as it is made up of systems
that are highly vulnerable to such attacks. Providing security to AMI is
necessary as adversaries can cause potential damage against infrastructures and
privacy in smart grid. One of the most effective and challenging topic's
identified, is the Key Management System (KMS), for sustaining the security
concerns in AMI. Therefore, KMS seeks to be a promising research area for
future development of AMI. This survey work highlights the key security issues
of advanced metering infrastructures and focuses on how key management
techniques can be utilized for safeguarding AMI. First of all, we explore the
main features of advanced metering infrastructures and identify the
relationship between smart grid and AMI. Then, we introduce the security issues
and challenges of AMI. We also provide a classification of the existing works
in literature that deal with secure key management system in AMI. Finally, we
identify possible future research directions of KMS in AMI
