Using Google Analytics Data to Expand Discovery and Use of Digital Archival Content
This article presents opportunities for the use of Google Analytics, a popular and freely available web analytics tool, to inform decision making for digital archivists managing online digital archives content. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of Google Analytics data to increase the visibility and discoverability of content. The article describes the use of Google Analytics to support fruitful digital outreach programs, to guide metadata creation for enhancing access, and to measure user demand to aid selection for digitization. Valuable reports, features, and tools in Google Analytics are identified and the use of these tools to gather meaningful data is explained
Preserving Social Media: the Problem of Access
As the applications and services made possible through Web 2.0 continue to proliferate and influence the way individuals exchange information, the landscape of social science research, as well as research in the humanities and the arts, has the potential to change dramatically and to be enriched by a wealth of new, user-generated data. In response to this phenomenon, the UK Data Service have commissioned the Digital Preservation Coalition to undertake a 12-month study into the preservation of social media as part of the ‘Big Data Network’ programme funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The larger study focuses on the potential uses and accompanying challenges of data generated by social networking applications.
This paper, ‘Preserving Social Media: the Problem of Access’, comprises an excerpt of that longer study, allowing the authors a space to explore in closer detail the issue of making social media archives accessible to researchers and students now and in the future. To do this, the paper addresses use cases that demonstrate the potential value of social media to academic social science. Furthermore, it examines how researchers and collecting institutions acquire and preserve social media data within a context of curatorial and legislative restrictions that may prove an even greater obstacle to access than any technical restrictions. Based on analysis of these obstacles, it will examine existing methods of curating and preserving social media archives, and second, make some recommendations for how collecting institutions might approach the long-term preservation of social media in a way that protects the individuals represented in the data and complies with the conditions of third party platforms. With the understanding that web-based communication technologies will continue to evolve, this paper will focus on the overarching properties of social media, analysing and comparing current methods of curation and preservation that provide sustainable solutions

Tracking the History and Evolution of Entities: Entity-centric Temporal Analysis of Large Social Media Archives
How did the popularity of the Greek Prime Minister evolve in 2015? How did
the predominant sentiment about him vary during that period? Were there any
controversial sub-periods? What other entities were related to him during these
periods? To answer these questions, one needs to analyze archived documents and
data about the query entities, such as old news articles or social media
archives. In particular, user-generated content posted in social networks, like
Twitter and Facebook, can be seen as a comprehensive documentation of our
society, and thus meaningful analysis methods over such archived data are of
immense value for sociologists, historians and other interested parties who
want to study the history and evolution of entities and events. To this end, in
this paper we propose an entity-centric approach to analyze social media
archives and we define measures that allow studying how entities were reflected
in social media in different time periods and under different aspects, like
popularity, attitude, controversiality, and connectedness with other entities.
A case study using a large Twitter archive of four years illustrates the
insights that can be gained by such an entity-centric and multi-aspect

New ADS Functionality for the Curator
In this paper we provide an update concerning the operations of the NASA
Astrophysics Data System (ADS), its services and user interface, and the
content currently indexed in its database. As the primary information system
used by researchers in Astronomy, the ADS aims to provide a comprehensive index
of all scholarly resources appearing in the literature. With the current effort
in our community to support data and software citations, we discuss what steps
the ADS is taking to provide the needed infrastructure in collaboration with
publishers and data providers. A new API provides access to the ADS search
interface, metrics, and libraries allowing users to programmatically automate
discovery and curation tasks. The new ADS interface supports a greater
integration of content and services with a variety of partners, including ORCID
claiming, indexing of SIMBAD objects, and article graphics from a variety of
publishers. Finally, we highlight how librarians can facilitate the ingest of

When resources are finite, people strive to manage resources jointly (if they do not rudely take possession of them). Organizing helps achieve—and even amplify—common purpose but often succumbs in time to organizational silos, teaming for the sake of teaming, and the obstacle course of organizational learning. The result is that organizations, be they in the form of hierarchies, markets, or networks (or, gradually more, hybrids of these), fail to create the right value for the right people at the right time. In the 21st century, most organizations are in any event lopsided and should be redesigned to serve a harmonious mix of economic, human, and social functions. In libraries as elsewhere, the three Ss of Strategy—Structure—Systems must give way to the three Ps of Purpose—Processes—People. Thence, with entrepreneurship and knowledge behaviors, data and web specialists can synergize in mutually supportive relationships of shared destiny
