    Mud crab (Scylla serrata) is a ten-legged crustacean animal from Brachura infraordo, known to have a very short tail (in Greek: brachy = short, ura = tail). Mangrove crab is one of the aquatic biota that has significant economic value and its life is strongly influenced by the existence of mangrove forest. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the relationship of weight and growth patterns of mangrove crab (Scylla serrata). Sampling is obtained by catching activities using fishing gear that is bubu (chang). Based on the results of research conducted in the area of Mangrove Forest around Wet Laboratory Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Likupang Timur in August - September 2017. Pengambilan sampel diperoleh dengan melakukan kegiatan penangkapan menggunakan alat tangkap yaitu bubu (chang). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang dilakukan di Daerah Hutan Mangrove sekitar Laboratorium Basah Fakultas Perikanan dan Ilmu Kelautan, Likupang Timur pada bulan Agustus – September 2017.     Penelitian tentang jenis dan intensitas ektoparasit pada kepiting bakau (Scylla serrata) stadia kepiting muda di pertambakan kepiting, Kecamatan Sedati, Kabupaten Sidoarjo. Penelitian ini telah dilakukan pada bulan Januari hingga Maret 2012 dengan tujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis ektoparasit dan penghitungan intensitas ektoparasit yang menyerang karapaks, kaki jalan, kaki renang dan insang Scylla serrata stadia kepiting muda di pertambakan kepiting, Kecamatan Sedati, Kabupaten Sidoarjo. Sampel Scylla serrata muda diambil di pertambakan kepiting, Kecamatan Sedati, Kabupaten Sidoarjo pada hari kesepuluh setelah tebar Scylla serrata muda. Sampel Scylla serrata muda yang diambil sebanyak 150 ekor. Hasil pengamatan diperoleh 4 spesies Protozoa yaitu Zoothamnium sp., Carchesium sp., Epistylis sp. dan Vorticella sp. serta 1 spesies Arthropoda yaitu Octolasmis sp. Intensitas serangan ektoparasit pada karapaks 12.066 %, kaki renang 11.534 %, kaki jalan 11.139 % dan insang 65.259 %. Intensitas total serangan Zoothamnium sp., Epistylis sp., Vorticella sp., Carchesium sp. dan Octolasmis sp. sebesar 72.654

    Taxonomic account of genus Scylla (de Haan, 1833) from Gujarat State, India with two new records of species

    The present study describes the taxonomic account of genus Scylla from Gujarat state, India. Specimens of crab were collected from 11 different marine sites/ habitats along the coastal region of the state. Of the several specimens examined on site, 30 morphologically distinct samples were selected for the study, and total 47 different morphological characters were measured. Three different species of genus Scylla were identified viz. Scylla serrata, Scylla tranquebarica and Scylla Olivacea. We report Scylla tranquebarica and Scylla Olivacea for the first time from the state. In general, S. serrata is reported as a dominant species with wide spread distribution while rest of the species show patchy distribution

    Transesterification of Tropical Edible Oils to Biodiesel Using Catalyst From Scylla serrata

    Abstract: Scylla serata shell was decomposed at various temperatures ranging from 700-1100 oC to obtain calcium oxide. Calcium oxide from decomposed Scylla serrata shell was characterized through X-Ray analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, and morphology analysis. Furthermore, decomposed Scylla serrata shell was used as catalyst for transesterification of tropical edible oils to form biodiesel. Biodiesel was characterized through density, viscosity, fatty acid value, and iodine number. The results showed that decomposed Scylla serrata shell at 900 oC could produce calcium oxide similar with standard, which was indicated from X-ray powder diffraction pattern of decomposed shell with JCPDS data. FTIR spectrum showed that main vibration of calcium oxide was observed at 393 cm-1. Morphology analysis using SEM indicated that uniform calcium oxide was obtained after decomposition. The use of decomposed shell as base catalyst for transesterification of tropical edible oils resulted biodiesel with density, viscosity, fatty acid value, and iodine number appropriated with SNI standard.Keywords: transesterification, edible oils, biodiesel, Scylla serrataAbstrak (Indonesian): Scyalla serrata telah didekomposisi pada berbagai suhu dari 700-1100 oC untuk diperoleh kalsium oksida. Kalsium oksida hasil dekomposisi dari cangkang Scylla serrata dikarakterisasi melalui pengukuran sinar X, analisis FTIR, dan analisis morfologi. Lebih lanjut, dekomposisi cangkang Scylla serrata digunakan sebagai katalis transesterifikasi minyak yang dimakan dari daerah tropis menjadi biodisel. Biodiesel dikarakterisasi melalui penentuan densitas, viskositas, nilai asam lemak, dan bilangan iod. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dekomposisi cangkang Scylla serrata pada 900 oC dapat menghasilkan kalsium oksida mirip kalsium oksida standar yang diindikasikan dari pola difraksi XRD yang mirip data JCPDS. Spektrum FTIR menunjukkan vibrasi utama kalsium oksida teramati pada bilangan gelombang 393 cm-1. Analisis morfologi menggunakan SEM menunjukkan bahwa bentuk yang lebih seragam diperoleh setelah proses dekomposisi. Penggunaan cangkang hasil dekomposisi sebagai katalis basa untuk transesterifikasi minyak yang dimakan dari daerah tropis menghasilkan biodisel dengan densitas, viskositas, nilai asam lemak, dan bilangan iod yang sesuai dengan standar SNI.Kata kunci: transesterifikasi, minyak yang dimakan dari daerah tropis, biodiesel, Scylla serrat

    The taxonomy of the mud crab, Scylla serrata has become a topic of interest. Alcock (1899) described this species from Indian waters. It was considered that under the genus Scylla, only one species, namely, Scylla serrata was valid. But Estampador (1949) revised the genus and reported the occurrence of four sorts, Scylla serrata, S. tranquebarica, S. oceanica and a variety S. serrata, var paramarnosain in Philippine waters. He established his claim based on the morphology such as colouration, relative length of chelae and also on the cytological events during gametogenesis. Serene (1952) pointed out that two distinct categories under this genus were demonstrable on the basis of colouration. But Stephenson & Campbell (1960) concluded them as only synonyms, but pointed out the need for further investigations

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis ektoparasit serta prevalensi serangan ektoparasit pada kepiting bakau (Scylla serrata) dari hasil tangkapan nelayan di perairan Alue Naga Kota Banda Aceh. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan 10 sampel kepiting bakau (Scylla serrata) dalam keadaan hidup yang diambil di perairan Alue Naga. Kemudian kepiting bakau (Scylla serrata) diperiksa di Laboratorium Parasitologi Fakultas Kedokteran Hewan Universitas Syiah Kuala untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis ektoparasit yang menginfeksinya. Pemeriksaan ektoparasit dilakukan pada hasil pengerokan lendir dari bagian karapas, kaki jalan, kaki renang dan insang. Kerokan lendir diperiksa secara mikroskopis untuk menemukan genus-genus ektoparasit, selanjutnya jenis ektoparasit yang telah ditemukan dibandingkan pada kunci identifikasi. Dari hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa ektoparasit yang menginfeksi kepiting bakau (Scylla serrata) di perairan Alue Naga Kota Banda Aceh yaitu dari genus Chilodonella sp. yang berpredileksi diinsang dengan tingkat prevalensi 10%

    Mud crab (Scylla serrata) have potency commercial market in this country and the other country. That thing because mud crab (Scylla serrata) flesh has a delicious taste and high nutrition. People haven't knowed about cholesterol content in both male or female mud crab (Scylla serrata), whereas the knowledge about cholesterol content is important to consider nutrition intake to keep in good health. This research aim to determine cholesterol content in Scylla serrata by observing male and female crab in Pemalang and Demak. This research used descriptive method and sampling used purposive random sampling method. Determination of sampling position used purposive sampling method. This research has done in October 30th – November 25th 2011. This research used 30 male and 30 female with mean body weigh 60 - 100 g. Analysis of cholesterol content used method by Lieberman–Burchad. Result from this research indicates that S. serrata from Pemalang has cholesterol content more large than S. serrata from Demak, while the male crab from both place has higher cholesterol content than female crab (66,67 mg/100g and 61,67 mg/100g in male crab, and 64,67 mg/100g and 58,33 mg/100g in female crab)

    Potentiality of Diethylamine as Agent of Deproteination and Deacetylation in the Extraction of Chitosan from Scylla serrata Shell

    The potentiality of diethylamine as deproteination and deacetylation agent in the extraction of chitosan from Scylla serrata (giant mud crab) shell was investigated. The aim was to find an alternative agent to inorganic alkalis as possible replacement for use in the production of high quality chitosan with the right stability. Pretreatment of the shell was carried out and followed by demineralization using hydrochloric acid. Diethylamine was used for deproteination and deacetylation by modifying some published protocols. Moisture, ash, fat and protein contents of the extracts were determined using their respective standard methods. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) technique was used for spectroscopic analysis. Scylla serrata shell was composed of 14.25% protein, 32.84% mineral (CaCO3), 31.52% chitin and 21.39% chitosan. Moisture, ash, fat and protein contents of chitin extracted from Scylla serrata shell were 2.35%, 3.03%, 1.79% and 3.85% respectively while those of chitosan were 1.65%, 3.84%, 0.53% and 2.80% respectively. Degree of deacetylation (DDA) and carbon to nitrogen ratio were 69.24% and 5.67 respectively. FTIR spectra of the extracted chitin and chitosan from Scylla serrata showed the presence of some active compounds of carbonyl, amide, amine and hydroxyl groups. However, CH3 waging along chain (952 cm-1), CO stretching at 1026 cm-1 and 1073 cm-1, and amide II band (1563 cm-1) were not found in the extracted chitin while HPO42- and amide III were also not found in the extracted chitosan. These moieties were present in the standard chitin and chitosan respectively. This study has shown that diethylamine (organic base) has great potential as agent of deproteination and deacetylation in the extraction of chitosan from Scylla serrata. Consequently, academic activity in the area of investigation of the stability of the extracted chitosan from Scylla serrata using diethylamine as deproteination and deacetylation agent is strongly recommended.     Jenis Kepiting Bakau (Scylla SP.) Yang Tertangkap Di Perairan Labuhan Bahari Belawan Medan

    Labuhan Bahari Belawan Medan merupakan sebuah pulau yang terletak di Selat Malaka, Sumatera Utara. Salah satu sumberdaya perikanan di perairan tersebut adalah kepiting bakau, namun informasi mengenai kepiting bakau pada daerah ini masih kurang terutama jenis spesiesnya. Tujuan dari penelitian yang dilaksanakan pada bulan Januari-Februari 2012 ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis dan morfologi kepiting bakau, kelimpahan yang mendominasi, dan mengetahui ekonomi kepiting bakau di perairan Labuhan Bahari Belawan Medan. Kepiting yang diteliti adalah kepiting bakau yang tertangkap di wilayah mangrove dan sekitar tambak yang ditumbuhi mangrove. Sampling dilakukan dengan alat tangkap bubu oleh masyarakat sekitar dinamakan bubu planet. Kepiting yang tertangkap diidentifikasi dan dilakukan pengukuran morfometrik kemudian menganalisa data yang didapatkan, dan wawancara nelayan untuk mengetahui nilai ekonomi kepiting bakau tersebut. Jumlah spesies kepiting bakau yang ditemukan adalah 3 spesies yaitu Scylla tranquebarica, Scylla serrata dan Scylla paramamosain, dengan kelimpahan yang mendominasi adalah Scylla tranquebarica sebesar 54,72%, Scylla paramamosain sebesar 33,96%, dan Scylla serrata sebesar 11,32% di stasiun I (di kawasan mangrove), sedangkan di stasiun II (di luar kawasan mangrove) Scylla serrata 45,76%, Scylla tranquebarica sebesar 33,98%, dan Scylla paramamosain sebesar 15,25%.
