Toxins are the poisonous products of organisms. Toxins serve vital defensive and offensive functions for those that harbor them: stinging scorpions, pesticidal plants, sanguinary snakes, fearless frogs, sliming snails, noxious newts, and smarting spiders. For physiologists, toxins are integral chemical tools that hijack life's fundamental processes with remarkable molecular specificity. Our understanding of electrophysiological phenomena has been transformed time and time again with the help of some terrifying toxins. For this reason, studies of toxin mechanism are an important and enduring facet of The Journal of General Physiology (JGP). This Milestone in Physiology reflects on toxins studied in JGP over its first 100 years, what they have taught us, and what they have yet to reveal

In the course of a herpetological survey of the summit of the Cumbres Calchaquíes Mountains, on a rocky outcrop facing south east, near Provincial Road352 (26º22'45.7”S, 65º43'54.7”W, 3612 m),38.3 km W Hualinchay, Trancas Department, Tucumán Province, on 16 December 2009 at ca. 1500, we found an adult male scorpion (Brachistosternus intermedius) under a rock holding with the chelae and eating the remains of a neonate lizard (posterior midbody, missing tip of tail).Fil: Perez, Cristian Hernan Fulvio. Design and Control of a Flight-Style AUV with Hovering Capability
The small flight-style Delphin AUV is designed to evaluate the performance of a long range survey AUV with the additional capability to hover and manoeuvre at slow speed. Delphin’s hull form is based on a scaled version of Autosub6000, and in addition to the main thruster and control surfaces at the rear of the vehicle, Delphin is equipped with four rim driven tunnel thrusters. In order to reduce the development cycle time, Delphin was designed to use commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) sensors and thrusters interfaced to a standard PC motherboard running the control software within the MS Windows environment. To further simplify the development, the autonomy system uses the State-Flow Toolbox within the Matlab/Simulink environment. While the autonomy software is running, image processing routines are used for obstacle avoidance and target tracking, within the commercial Scorpion Vision software. This runs as a parallel thread and passes results to Matlab via the TCP/IP communication protocol. The COTS based development approach has proved effective. However, a powerful PC is required to effectively run Matlab and Simulink, and, due to the nature of the Windows environment, it is impossible to run the control in hard real-time. The autonomy system will be recoded to run under the Matlab Windows Real-Time Windows Target in the near future. Experimental results are used to demonstrating the performance and current capabilities of the vehicle are presented
The pMSSM10 after LHC Run 1
We present a frequentist analysis of the parameter space of the pMSSM10, in
which the following 10 soft SUSY-breaking parameters are specified
independently at the mean scalar top mass scale Msusy = Sqrt[M_stop1 M_stop2]:
the gaugino masses M_{1,2,3}, the 1st-and 2nd-generation squark masses M_squ1 =
M_squ2, the third-generation squark mass M_squ3, a common slepton mass M_slep
and a common trilinear mixing parameter A, the Higgs mixing parameter mu, the
pseudoscalar Higgs mass M_A and tan beta. We use the MultiNest sampling
algorithm with 1.2 x 10^9 points to sample the pMSSM10 parameter space. A
dedicated study shows that the sensitivities to strongly-interacting SUSY
masses of ATLAS and CMS searches for jets, leptons + MET signals depend only
weakly on many of the other pMSSM10 parameters. With the aid of the Atom and
Scorpion codes, we also implement the LHC searches for EW-interacting
sparticles and light stops, so as to confront the pMSSM10 parameter space with
all relevant SUSY searches. In addition, our analysis includes Higgs mass and
rate measurements using the HiggsSignals code, SUSY Higgs exclusion bounds, the
measurements B-physics observables, EW precision observables, the CDM density
and searches for spin-independent DM scattering. We show that the pMSSM10 is
able to provide a SUSY interpretation of (g-2)_mu, unlike the CMSSM, NUHM1 and
NUHM2. As a result, we find (omitting Higgs rates) that the minimum chi^2/dof =
20.5/18 in the pMSSM10, corresponding to a chi^2 probability of 30.8 %, to be
compared with chi^2/dof = 32.8/24 (31.1/23) (30.3/22) in the CMSSM (NUHM1)
(NUHM2). We display 1-dimensional likelihood functions for SUSY masses, and
show that they may be significantly lighter in the pMSSM10 than in the CMSSM,
NUHM1 and NUHM2. We discuss the discovery potential of future LHC runs, e+e-
colliders and direct detection experiments.Comment: 47 pages, 29 figure
Bounded Coordinate-Descent for Biological Sequence Classification in High Dimensional Predictor Space
We present a framework for discriminative sequence classification where the
learner works directly in the high dimensional predictor space of all
subsequences in the training set. This is possible by employing a new
coordinate-descent algorithm coupled with bounding the magnitude of the
gradient for selecting discriminative subsequences fast. We characterize the
loss functions for which our generic learning algorithm can be applied and
present concrete implementations for logistic regression (binomial
log-likelihood loss) and support vector machines (squared hinge loss).
Application of our algorithm to protein remote homology detection and remote
fold recognition results in performance comparable to that of state-of-the-art
methods (e.g., kernel support vector machines). Unlike state-of-the-art
classifiers, the resulting classification models are simply lists of weighted
discriminative subsequences and can thus be interpreted and related to the
biological problem
Distribution of the Water Scorpion \u3ci\u3eNepa Apiculata\u3c/i\u3e (Hemiptera: Nepidae) in Wisconsin
The water scorpion Nepa apiculata Uhler was considered rare in Wiscon- sin by Hilsenhoff (1984), who collected only 11 individuals during a 25-year period. All of his collections were from overwintering sites, especially debris in streams, during early spring or autumn (Hilsenhoff, pers. comm.). He concluded that the species was restricted to southern Wisconsin. Recent collections indicate that N. apiculata is more widely distributed. These records, summarized below, are documented with specimens in the University of Wisconsin-Madison insect collection
