    Bibliometrics and scientometrics in India: An overview of studies during 1995-2014Part II: Contents of the articles in terms of disciplines and their bibliometric aspects

    This part of the study highlights the contents of the published articles in terms of various disciplines or sub-disciplines and the bibliometric aspects discussed in these articles. The analysis of 902 papers published by Indian scholars during1995-2014 indicates that the main focus of bibliometrics/scientometrics is on assessment of science and technology in India in different sub-disciplines including contributions by Indian states and other individual countries followed by bibliometric analysis of individual journals. Papers dealing with bibliometric laws received a low priority as compared to other subdisciplines of bibliometrics/scientometrics. The analysis of data indicates that the share of theoretical studies using mathematical and statistical techniques which were missing in the earlier period (1970-1994) has increased during 1995-2014. The field of medicine as a discipline received the highest attention as compared to other disciplines

    The role of handbooks in knowledge creation and diffusion: A case of science and technology studies

    Genre is considered to be an important element in scholarly communication and in the practice of scientific disciplines. However, scientometric studies have typically focused on a single genre, the journal article. The goal of this study is to understand the role that handbooks play in knowledge creation and diffusion and their relationship with the genre of journal articles, particularly in highly interdisciplinary and emergent social science and humanities disciplines. To shed light on these questions we focused on handbooks and journal articles published over the last four decades belonging to the research area of Science and Technology Studies (STS), broadly defined. To get a detailed picture we used the full-text of five handbooks (500,000 words) and a well-defined set of 11,700 STS articles. We confirmed the methodological split of STS into qualitative and quantitative (scientometric) approaches. Even when the two traditions explore similar topics (e.g., science and gender) they approach them from different starting points. The change in cognitive foci in both handbooks and articles partially reflects the changing trends in STS research, often driven by technology. Using text similarity measures we found that, in the case of STS, handbooks play no special role in either focusing the research efforts or marking their decline. In general, they do not represent the summaries of research directions that have emerged since the previous edition of the handbook.Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Informetric

    Research Productivity of the scientists of Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) Kalpakkam (Chennai): A Scientometric Analysis

    The present study evaluates the research publication trend among scientists of Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research during the period 1989-2013. Data were analyzed based on type of publication, year of publication, language, source, country, institutions, most preferred journals and most prolific authors among other variables. The study revealed that majority (96.26%) of the researchers preferred to publish their research papers in joint authorship only and the degree of author collaboration ranges from 0.84 to 0.99 and its mean value is 0.95. It also revealed that IGCAR scientists preferred to publish their work in the Journal of Nuclear Materials and Transactions of the Indian Institute of Metals. The top three collaborative institutions with IGCAR are Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai and Anna University, Chennai

    Research Productivity and Research Trends in the Library and Information Science Subject: A Study with reference to SCOPUS

    The current study attempts to find out the research productivity and trends in Library and Information Science (LIS)subject in India during 1944 to 2017 by using bibliometric and content analysis methods. The publication data for the study was extracted from the Scopus database which consists of 1944 publications published by Indian authors.Thebibliographic data were analyzedby different bibliometric indicators which include most preferred journals, most prolific author, author collaboration trends, most prolific institutions and highly cited papers. The study reveals many important facets of LIS research in India. Gupta, B. M. the as recognized as the most prolific author with57papers; whereina context toa totalnumber of citations received Garg, K. C. topped in term of 406 citations. DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technolgy was identified as the most preferred journal with highest publications followed by Scientometrics Journal. The content analysis of the publications shows three major clusters in LIS research includes “Use and User study,”“Bibliometric/Scientometrics” and “Digital Library Research.

    Science Research Output pattern of University of Delhi (2015-2019)

    The current research has been conducted to tress out the science research output of University of Delhi (DU) in the last five years (2015-2019) after using Web of Science (WOS) database. The present study has used Web of Science databases to collect the science research output of University of Delhi for the specified period. The retrieved data were analyzed using specific parameters. This study investigates the most productive institutes, countries, authors the impact of their output in terms of Relative Citation Impact (RCI) and Citation per Paper (CPP). For visualizing purposes, VOS Viewer has been used. We retrieved 6500 papers from Web of Science, consisting of 87.6% journal articles, 6.29% proceeding papers, and 6.15% review articles. The analysis of data indicates that consistent growth with increasing multi-authorship is the general trend of research. Multiauthored papers with international collaboration have more research impact (CPP, RCI) compared to others. USA, Germany, Korea topped the list of collaborating countries in science research. However, Canada made the very best effect in phrases of CPP and RCI. The University of Delhi has a major collaboration with BHU, JNU, IIT, and CSIR in terms of domestic collaboration. The study can be better used for further identification of research areas in sciences where attention can be given

    Collaboration of Authorship and Co-Citation Pattern in Annals of Library and Information Studies (ALIS) during 2011-2020: An Evaluation

    The Annals of Library and Information Studies (ALIS) is probably the most well-known journal in the library and information science discipline. This paper examines the collaboration and authorship pattern of ALIS within the study period from 2011-2020. Total 312 articles were published within 2011-2020, and a single author wrote 105 no of articles, two writers wrote 150 articles, 44 articles were written by three writers, and 13 articles were written by multiple writers. From the examination, it is Shaw that the single authorship pattern is most important in ALIS. Based on this investigation, it found that the average CC (Collaboration Coefficient) is 0.37, and mean DC (Degree of Collaboration) is 0.33, and mean MCC is 0.38, CAI (Co-authorship Index) is decreased from 115.56 to 66.032, and mean RGR decreasing from 0.44 to 0.09, mean DT increasing from 3.33 to 7.8 in this study period. According to the statistics, the highest activity index was recorded in 2015 for India (109.75), and the lowest AI (Activity index) is recorded in 2013(76.86). In 2013 the highest activity index was recorded for the world (281.89), and the lowest activity index was recorded for the world(23.31) in 2015and B.K Sen is the highest co-cited author between DK.     Analysis of heterogeneous collaboration in the German research system with a focus on nanotechnology

    The German research system is functionally differentiated into various institutional pillars, most importantly the university system and the extra-university sector including institutes of the Helmholtz Association, the Max Planck Society, the Leibniz Association and the Fraunhofer Society. While the research organisations heterogeneous institutional profiles are widely regarded as a key strength of the German research landscape, tendencies towards segmentation and institutional self-interests have increasingly impeded inter-institutional collaboration. Yet, in young and highly dynamic fields, many research breakthroughs are stimulated at the intersection of established scientific disciplines and across fundamental and applied technological research. Therefore, inter-institutional collaboration is an important dimension of the performance of the German research system. There is tension between the need for effective inter-institutional collaboration on the one hand, and the governance structures in the public research sector on the other hand. The paper presents preliminary results of an ongoing DFG project on collaborations between the various research institutions in Germany, particularly in the field of nano S&T. It introduces key facts of the German research system including institutional dynamics between 1990 and 2002. It discusses rationales for cooperative research relationships and elaborates on institutional factors that either facilitate or interfere with the transfer of knowledge and expertise between research organizations. For this purpose, the paper refers to a governance cube as a heuristic tool that captures three institutional dimensions which are important in facilitating heterogeneous research cooperation. --
