    Staring into the abyss: An evaluation of concurrency control with one thousand cores

    Computer architectures are moving towards an era dominated by many-core machines with dozens or even hundreds of cores on a single chip. This unprecedented level of on-chip parallelism introduces a new dimension to scalability that current database management systems (DBMSs) were not designed for. In particular, as the number of cores increases, the problem of concurrency control becomes extremely challenging. With hundreds of threads running in parallel, the complexity of coordinating competing accesses to data will likely diminish the gains from increased core counts. To better understand just how unprepared current DBMSs are for future CPU architectures, we performed an evaluation of concurrency control for on-line transaction processing (OLTP) workloads on many-core chips. We implemented seven concurrency control algorithms on a main-memory DBMS and using computer simulations scaled our system to 1024 cores. Our analysis shows that all algorithms fail to scale to this magnitude but for different reasons. In each case, we identify fundamental bottlenecks that are independent of the particular database implementation and argue that even state-of-the-art DBMSs suffer from these limitations. We conclude that rather than pursuing incremental solutions, many-core chips may require a completely redesigned DBMS architecture that is built from ground up and is tightly coupled with the hardware.Intel Corporation (Science and Technology Center for Big Data

    Adaptive Resource Management Techniques for High Performance Multi-Core Architectures

    Reducing the average memory access time is crucial for improving the performance of applications executing on multi-core architectures. With workload consolidation this becomes increasingly challenging due to shared resource contention. Previous works has proposed techniques for partitioning of shared resources (e.g. cache and bandwidth) and prefetch throttling with the goal of mitigating contention and reducing or hiding average memory access time.Cache partitioning in multi-core architectures is challenging due to the need to determine cache allocations with low computational overhead and the need to place the partitions in a locality-aware manner. The requirement for low computational overhead is important in order to have the capability to scale to large core counts. Previous work within multi-resource management has proposed coordinately managing a subset of the techniques: cache partitioning, bandwidth partitioning and prefetch throttling. However, coordinated management of all three techniques opens up new possible trade-offs and interactions which can be leveraged to gain better performance. This thesis contributes with two different resource management techniques: One resource manger for scalable cache partitioning and a multi-resource management technique for coordinated management of cache partitioning, bandwidth partitioning and prefetching. The scalable resource management technique for cache partitioning uses a distributed and asynchronous cache partitioning algorithm that works together with a flexible NUCA enforcement mechanism in order to give locality-aware placement of data and support fine-grained partitions. The algorithm adapts quickly to application phase changes. The distributed nature of the algorithm together with the low computational complexity, enables the solution to be implemented in hardware and scale to large core counts. The multi-resource management technique for coordinated management of cache partitioning bandwidth partitioning and prefetching is designed using the results from our in-depth characterisation from the entire SPEC CPU2006 suite. The solution consists of three local resource management techniques that together with a coordination mechanism provides allocations which takes the inter-resource interactions and trade-offs into account.Our evaluation shows that the distributed cache partitioning solution performs within 1% from the best known centralized solution, which cannot scale to large core counts. The solution improves performance by 9% and 16%, on average, on a 16 and 64-core multi-core architecture, respectively, compared to a shared last-level cache. The multi-resource management technique gives a performance increase of 11%, on average, over state-of-the-art and improves performance by 50% compared to the baseline 16-core multi-core without cache partitioning, bandwidth partitioning and prefetch throttling

    Data Resource Management in Throughput Processors

    Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are becoming common in data centers for tasks like neural network training and image processing due to their high performance and efficiency. GPUs maintain high throughput by running thousands of threads simultaneously, issuing instructions from ready threads to hide latency in others that are stalled. While this is effective for keeping the arithmetic units busy, the challenge in GPU design is moving the data for computation at the same high rate. Any inefficiency in data movement and storage will compromise the throughput and energy efficiency of the system. Since energy consumption and cooling make up a large part of the cost of provisioning and running and a data center, making GPUs more suitable for this environment requires removing the bottlenecks and overheads that limit their efficiency. The performance of GPU workloads is often limited by the throughput of the memory resources inside each GPU core, and though many of the power-hungry structures in CPUs are not found in GPU designs, there is overhead for storing each thread's state. When sharing a GPU between workloads, contention for resources also causes interference and slowdown. This thesis develops techniques to manage and streamline the data movement and storage resources in GPUs in each of these places. The first part of this thesis resolves data movement restrictions inside each GPU core. The GPU memory system is optimized for sequential accesses, but many workloads load data in irregular or transposed patterns that cause a throughput bottleneck even when all loads are cache hits. This work identifies and leverages opportunities to merge requests across threads before sending them to the cache. While requests are waiting for merges, they can be reordered to achieve a higher cache hit rate. These methods yielded a 38% speedup for memory throughput limited workloads. Another opportunity for optimization is found in the register file. Since it must store the registers for thousands of active threads, it is the largest on-chip data storage structure on a GPU. The second work in this thesis replaces the register file with a smaller, more energy-efficient register buffer. Compiler directives allow the GPU to know ahead of time which registers will be accessed, allowing the hardware to store only the registers that will be imminently accessed in the buffer, with the rest moved to main memory. This technique reduced total GPU energy by 11%. Finally, in a data center, many different applications will be launching GPU jobs, and just as multiple processes can share the same CPU to increase its utilization, running multiple workloads on the same GPU can increase its overall throughput. However, co-runners interfere with each other in unpredictable ways, especially when sharing memory resources. The final part of this thesis controls this interference, allowing a GPU to be shared between two tiers of workloads: one tier with a high performance target and another suitable for batch jobs without deadlines. At a 90% performance target, this technique increased GPU throughput by 9.3%. GPUs' high efficiency and performance makes them a valuable accelerator in the data center. The contributions in this thesis further increase their efficiency by removing data movement and storage overheads and unlock additional performance by enabling resources to be shared between workloads while controlling interference.PHDComputer Science & EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     dissertationWith the explosion of chip transistor counts, the semiconductor industry has struggled with ways to continue scaling computing performance in line with historical trends. In recent years, the de facto solution to utilize excess transistors has been to increase the size of the on-chip data cache, allowing fast access to an increased portion of main memory. These large caches allowed the continued scaling of single thread performance, which had not yet reached the limit of instruction level parallelism (ILP). As we approach the potential limits of parallelism within a single threaded application, new approaches such as chip multiprocessors (CMP) have become popular for scaling performance utilizing thread level parallelism (TLP). This dissertation identifies the operating system as a ubiquitous area where single threaded performance and multithreaded performance have often been ignored by computer architects. We propose that novel hardware and OS co-design has the potential to significantly improve current chip multiprocessor designs, enabling increased performance and improved power efficiency. We show that the operating system contributes a nontrivial overhead to even the most computationally intense workloads and that this OS contribution grows to a significant fraction of total instructions when executing several common applications found in the datacenter. We demonstrate that architectural improvements have had little to no effect on the performance of the OS over the last 15 years, leaving ample room for improvements. We specifically consider three potential solutions to improve OS execution on modern processors. First, we consider the potential of a separate operating system processor (OSP) operating concurrently with general purpose processors (GPP) in a chip multiprocessor organization, with several specialized structures acting as efficient conduits between these processors. Second, we consider the potential of segregating existing caching structures to decrease cache interference between the OS and application. Third, we propose that there are components within the OS itself that should be refactored to be both multithreaded and cache topology aware, which in turn, improves the performance and scalability of many-threaded applications
