    Epidemic failure detection and consensus for extreme parallelism

    Future extreme-scale high-performance computing systems will be required to work under frequent component failures. The MPI Forum’s User Level Failure Mitigation proposal has introduced an operation, MPI Comm shrink, to synchronize the alive processes on the list of failed processes, so that applications can continue to execute even in the presence of failures by adopting algorithm-based fault tolerance techniques. This MPI Comm shrink operation requires a failure detection and consensus algorithm. This paper presents three novel failure detection and consensus algorithms using Gossiping. Stochastic pinging is used to quickly detect failures during the execution of the algorithm, failures are then disseminated to all the fault-free processes in the system and consensus on the failures is detected using the three consensus techniques. The proposed algorithms were implemented and tested using the Extreme-scale Simulator. The results show that the stochastic pinging detects all the failures in the system. In all the algorithms, the number of Gossip cycles to achieve global consensus scales logarithmically with system size. The second algorithm also shows better scalability in terms of memory and network bandwidth usage and a perfect synchronization in achieving global consensus. The third approach is a three-phase distributed failure detection and consensus algorithm and provides consistency guarantees even in very large and extreme-scale systems while at the same time being memory and bandwidth efficient

    Resiliency in numerical algorithm design for extreme scale simulations

    This work is based on the seminar titled ‘Resiliency in Numerical Algorithm Design for Extreme Scale Simulations’ held March 1–6, 2020, at Schloss Dagstuhl, that was attended by all the authors. Advanced supercomputing is characterized by very high computation speeds at the cost of involving an enormous amount of resources and costs. A typical large-scale computation running for 48 h on a system consuming 20 MW, as predicted for exascale systems, would consume a million kWh, corresponding to about 100k Euro in energy cost for executing 1023 floating-point operations. It is clearly unacceptable to lose the whole computation if any of the several million parallel processes fails during the execution. Moreover, if a single operation suffers from a bit-flip error, should the whole computation be declared invalid? What about the notion of reproducibility itself: should this core paradigm of science be revised and refined for results that are obtained by large-scale simulation? Naive versions of conventional resilience techniques will not scale to the exascale regime: with a main memory footprint of tens of Petabytes, synchronously writing checkpoint data all the way to background storage at frequent intervals will create intolerable overheads in runtime and energy consumption. Forecasts show that the mean time between failures could be lower than the time to recover from such a checkpoint, so that large calculations at scale might not make any progress if robust alternatives are not investigated. More advanced resilience techniques must be devised. The key may lie in exploiting both advanced system features as well as specific application knowledge. Research will face two essential questions: (1) what are the reliability requirements for a particular computation and (2) how do we best design the algorithms and software to meet these requirements? While the analysis of use cases can help understand the particular reliability requirements, the construction of remedies is currently wide open. One avenue would be to refine and improve on system- or application-level checkpointing and rollback strategies in the case an error is detected. Developers might use fault notification interfaces and flexible runtime systems to respond to node failures in an application-dependent fashion. Novel numerical algorithms or more stochastic computational approaches may be required to meet accuracy requirements in the face of undetectable soft errors. These ideas constituted an essential topic of the seminar. The goal of this Dagstuhl Seminar was to bring together a diverse group of scientists with expertise in exascale computing to discuss novel ways to make applications resilient against detected and undetected faults. In particular, participants explored the role that algorithms and applications play in the holistic approach needed to tackle this challenge. This article gathers a broad range of perspectives on the role of algorithms, applications and systems in achieving resilience for extreme scale simulations.     Toward Reliable and Efficient Message Passing Software for HPC Systems: Fault Tolerance and Vector Extension

    As the scale of High-performance Computing (HPC) systems continues to grow, researchers are devoted themselves to achieve the best performance of running long computing jobs on these systems. My research focus on reliability and efficiency study for HPC software. First, as systems become larger, mean-time-to-failure (MTTF) of these HPC systems is negatively impacted and tends to decrease. Handling system failures becomes a prime challenge. My research aims to present a general design and implementation of an efficient runtime-level failure detection and propagation strategy targeting large-scale, dynamic systems that is able to detect both node and process failures. Using multiple overlapping topologies to optimize the detection and propagation, minimizing the incurred overhead sand guaranteeing the scalability of the entire framework. Results from different machines and benchmarks compared to related works shows that my design and implementation outperforms non-HPC solutions significantly, and is competitive with specialized HPC solutions that can manage only MPI applications. Second, I endeavor to implore instruction level parallelization to achieve optimal performance. Novel processors support long vector extensions, which enables researchers to exploit the potential peak performance of target architectures. Intel introduced Advanced Vector Extension (AVX512 and AVX2) instructions for x86 Instruction Set Architecture (ISA). Arm introduced Scalable Vector Extension (SVE) with a new set of A64 instructions. Both enable greater parallelisms. My research utilizes long vector reduction instructions to improve the performance of MPI reduction operations. Also, I use gather and scatter feature to speed up the packing and unpacking operation in MPI. The evaluation of the resulting software stack under different scenarios demonstrates that the approach is not only efficient but also generalizable to many vector architecture and efficient

    Design and Implementation of a Scalable Membership Service for Supercomputer Resiliency-Aware Runtime

    As HPC systems and applications get bigger and more complex, we are approaching an era in which resiliency and run-time elasticity concerns become paramount. We offer a building block for an alternative resiliency approach in which computations will be able to make progress while components fail, in addition to enabling a dynamic set of nodes throughout a computation lifetime. The core of our solution is a hierarchical scalable membership service providing eventual consistency semantics. An attribute replication service is used for hierarchy organization, and is exposed to external applications. Our solution is based on P2P technologies and provides resiliency and elastic runtime support at ultra large scales. Resulting middleware is general purpose while exploiting HPC platform unique features and architecture. We have implemented and tested this system on BlueGene/P with Linux, and using worst-case analysis, evaluated the service scalability as effective for up to 1M nodes

    Dynamic deadlock verification for general barrier synchronisation

    We present Armus, a dynamic verification tool for deadlock detection and avoidance specialised in barrier synchronisation. Barriers are used to coordinate the execution of groups of tasks, and serve as a building block of parallel computing. Our tool verifies more barrier synchronisation patterns than current state-of-the-art. To improve the scalability of verification, we introduce a novel eventbased representation of concurrency constraints, and a graph-based technique for deadlock analysis. The implementation is distributed and fault-tolerant, and can verify X10 and Java programs. To formalise the notion of barrier deadlock, we introduce a core language expressive enough to represent the three most widespread barrier synchronisation patterns: group, split-phase, and dynamic membership. We propose a graph analysis technique that selects from two alternative graph representations: the Wait-For Graph, that favours programs with more tasks than barriers; and the State Graph, optimised for programs with more barriers than tasks. We prove that finding a deadlock in either representation is equivalent, and that the verification algorithm is sound and complete with respect to the notion of deadlock in our core language. Armus is evaluated with three benchmark suites in local and distributed scenarios. The benchmarks show that graph analysis with automatic graph-representation selection can record a 7-fold execution increase versus the traditional fixed graph representation. The performance measurements for distributed deadlock detection between 64 processes show negligible overheads
