    The Smart Home Services Diffusion Process: A System Dynamics Model

    The application of smart technologies for domestic environment has been around for a while. But the market diffusion of such products and services has not seen yet a significant growth. This paper seeks to provide an overview of the most important factors that influence the diffusion process of smart home services via literature and a case study. These factors compose a System Dynamics model showing the diffusion dynamics of three main smart home services (Heating, Monitoring, Assisted Living)

    Home delivery services: innovations and emerging needs

    The increasing amount of small-sized shipments and their frequency variation, due to the growth of e-commerce, pose a great challenge to logistics service providers. At the same time, new technologies and innovations are being developed with the aim of increasing the efficiency of logistics service provider, as much as foster the creation of new enterprises and business models in the home delivery sector. The aim of this paper is to provide an exploratory analysis of the fit between existing home delivery innovative services, requirements, and issues that users might have. To do so, we review the main features of innovative services and we compare them with the findings from an online survey. For each service, we identify the value propositions, and the issues the service aims to address. In particular, four innovative services are reviewed. Through the online survey, we identify user’s habits, requirements and perceptions regarding the effectiveness and features of the innovative services

    SmartBike: an IoT Crowd Sensing Platform for Monitoring City Air Pollution

    In recent years, the Smart City concept is emerging as a way to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve the overall quality of citizen life. The rise of Smart City solutions is encouraged by the increasing availability of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and crowd sensing technologies. This paper presents an IoT Crowd Sensing platform that offers a set of services to citizens by exploiting a network of bicycles as IoT probes. Based on a survey conducted to identify the most interesting bike-enabled services, the SmartBike platform provides: real time remote geo-location of users’ bikes, anti-theft service, information about traveled route, and air pollution monitoring. The proposed SmartBike platform is composed of three main components: the SmartBike mobile sensors for data collection installed on the bicycle; the end-user devices implementing the user interface for geo-location and anti-theft; and the SmartBike central servers for storing and processing detected data and providing a web interface for data visualization. The suitability of the platform was evaluated through the implementation of an initial prototype. Results demonstrate that the proposed SmartBike platform is able to provide the stated services, and, in addition, that the accuracy of the acquired air quality measurements is compatible with the one provided by the official environmental monitoring system of the city of Turin. The described platform will be adopted within a project promoted by the city of Turin, that aims at helping people making their mobility behavior more sustainable

    Towards Environmental Inclusion: Fostering inclusive mobility behaviours through Internet of Things

    This poster describes our project about design for sustainable mobility behaviour, facilitated by the Internet of Things. In particular we have based our research on Schultz's integrated cognitive representation of self and other that confirms sustainable behaviours are the consequences of the ecological thinking. In order to foster ecological thinking in the home environment, we have designed a smart key hook that has three essential connected parts with which users interact: digital interface, touch bottoms and key hooks. The digital interface displays the transformations within the ecosystem based on the data and the related metrics, which are accessed from credible sources and are [near] real-time data. The device offers educational value by presenting the effect of the user's decisions in choosing different modes of transportation

    A Distributed Multi-Model Platform to Cosimulate Multi-Energy Systems in Smart Buildings

    Nowadays, buildings are responsible for large consumption of energy in our cities. Moreover, buildings can be seen as the smallest entity of urban energy systems. On these premises, in this paper, we present a flexible and distributed co-simulation platform that exploits a multi-modelling approach to simulate and evaluate energy performance in smart buildings. The developed platform exploits the Mosaik co-simulation framework and implements the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI) standard in order to couple and synchronise heterogeneous simulators and models. The platform combines in a shared simulation environment: i) the thermal performance of the building simulated with EnergyPlus; ii) a heat pump integrated with a PID control strategy modelled in Modelica to satisfy the heating demand of the building; iii) an electrical energy storage system modelled in MATLAB Simulink; and iv) different Python models used to simulate household occupancy, electrical loads, photovoltaic production and smart meters, respectively. The platform guarantees a plug-and-play integration of models and simulators, in which one or more models can be easily replaced without affecting the whole simulation engine. Finally, we present a demonstration example to test the functionalities, capability and usability of the developed platform and discuss future developments of our framework

    Revisione internazionale- relazione a invito- chair sessione S8T The paper aims to develop some thoughts on the upgrade implemented in the disciplines of drawing from the latest forms of digital representation, commenting on the experiences under way in some university courses included in the learning curriculum provided to engineering students with regard to the course of study in Ingegneria Edile (Building Engineering, also known as Architectural or Construction Engineering) at the Politecnico di Torino. It's a matter of reasoning on what and how to suggest knowledge and practises in the experience of teaching that result as an improvement of skills and abilities appropriate for future commitments required by the job world. Method: Methodological reasons, subject contents and experiences positively carried out during the activities of the course of Representation Techniques and Data Management (in the post graduate "Laurea Magistrale") are treated, focusing on all the resources needed to conduct profitable operations training and first clarifying the specific skills and experience required for the teaching staff, essential qualities to ensure good results: all the activities organized to achieve the training objectives are based on the belief that early training is needed to trigger virtuous review processes for engineering practice and that opportunities to practice through simulations in the academic curriculum for future engineers can produce effects of greater permanence and enable an enhancement of learning outcomes. Result: The analysis, which is addressed primarily to illustrate the result of some of the outcomes of exercise activities leaded by students, brings attention to a solicitation that seems to be constraining and that concerns the system of relations required between operators of the design and construction process, which are requested to enter into shared aims while operating in the specificity of the various technical fields; in this sense, the tricks of the CAD, which is at the service of a geometric knowledge, measured and fulfilled by its attributes, the attention demanded by BIM, which builds a widespread and open network of relationship, the cunnings of the GIS, which has to gather dynamic information and alternative choices, appear to address areas of operational testing following a single purpose directed towards a better characterization of the process of conceptual development and a more advantageous control of the working method. Discussion & Conclusion: So, with the design and over the usual representations, we speak of computer tricks to say that to be understood as the necessary infrastructure to solicit and investigate the reasons of doing and how to solve the complexity of operating on the field, upon which students must impractical themselves to identify qualities and limits, whether they are exploring the reasons of the survey or the reasons bound with the design; certainly a renewal for the most usual ways of designing useful to produce different levels of knowledge and a new shared place for the exchange and discussion of the hypotheses, with what results

    HYBRID GIS-BIM APPROACH FOR THE TORINO DIGITAL-TWIN: THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A FLOOR-LEVEL 3D CITY GEODATABASE

    The research tries to present a preliminary work into geo-spatial management of public administration assets thanks to interoperability of BIM-GIS models, related to urban scale scenarios. The strategy proposed tries to deepen the management, conversion and integration of databases related to public assets and particularly schools building, and related them into city-related geo-databases. The methodology, based on the real scenario of Torino Municipality and their needs addressed in recent studies in collaboration with FULL – Future Urban Legacy Lab from Politecnico di Torino, take advantage from the availability of two test dataset at different scale, with different potential and bottlenecks. The idea of developing a 3D digital twin of Torino actually stop long before the 3D city modelling only, but rather we have to deal with the integration and harmonization of existing databases. These data collections are often coming from different updating and based on non-homogeneous languages and data models. The data are often in table format and managed by different offices and as many management systems. Moreover, recently public administrations as the one of Torino, have increase availability of BIM models, especially for public assets, which need to be known, archived, and localized in a geographic dimension in order to benefit from the real strategic potential of a spatial-enabled facility management platform as Digital Twin. Combining the use of parametric modeler software (Revit) and visual programming language (Dynamo), the proposed methodology tries to elaborate rules on a set of shared language parameters (characterizing the buildings as attributes in both datasets: ID; address; construction; floors; rooms dimensions, use, floor; height; glass surfaces). This is tested as conversion workflow between the Municipality DB and the BIM model. This solution firstly allows the interaction and query between models, and then it proposes open issues once the enriched BIM model is imported into the geographical dimension of the Torino 3D city model Digital Twin (ArcGIS Pro platform), according to LOD standards, and enriched with semantic components from municipality D
