    Landscape of e-Learning during Covid-19: Case Study of Economic Disciplines in Croatia

    Background: The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the digitalisation level of education. Many institutions had some knowledge and practical background in delivering lectures online. Some countries apply a top-down digitalisation approach driven by policy or strategy and externally impacted by the government. Some other countries rather initiate digitalisation internally by teachers and universities. Objectives: The main goal is to investigate the digitalisation level of the higher education system in Croatia, exploring the digitalisation of economic disciplines compared to other scientific fields. Methods/Approach: We assess the digitalisation level of higher education based on the regulatory framework, applied approach of digitalisation, the agility of transition to online teaching and the existing number of courses and online study programs. Education digitalisation in different countries is compared with the Croatian experience. Results: Although the satisfactory level of higher education institutions’ agility to switch online exist, there hasn’t been a centralised project led by the government and supported by proper funds to increase digitalisation in Croatia. Even before the pandemic, many e-courses from economics and business had been offered to students, but online study programs were exceptions, covering mainly the economics and business field. Conclusions: The Covid-19 pandemic has improved the digitalisation process in the Croatian education system. A general framework for the digitalisation of education should be developed containing the detailed administrative processes and appropriate funds to be implemented

    Internationalization in Higher Education: an Analysis of Croatian Universities

    Around the globe, non-anglophone universities and higher education institutions (HEIs) are trying to internationalize providing students with opportunities to take non-language courses in a foreign language. The usual medium of instruction is English (EMI), which has become a global phenomenon. This paper aims to examine a macro-level university and HEIs’ policy on implementing non-language courses in four largest and oldest Croatian universities and their constituent units. Examining public records of the universities and HEIs, this study will research types and levels of study programs, operationalization of language medium instruction, policy implementation and curriculum evaluation. Since English/Language for Specific Purposes (ESP/LSP) courses can be perceived as preparatory courses for EMI/LMI, types, (non)obligatory nature and workload of ESP/LSP courses taught at the examined HEIs will be studied. The research showed that ESP courses are mostly taught as obligatory courses at the undergraduate level and occasionally as optional courses at the graduate study level. The highest workload of LSP courses is recorded at the HEIs from the Social Sciences fields and the lowest from the Natural Sciences fields, which consequently results in those HEIs (not) offering study programs in a foreign language

    Mishandled: Turnhill University’s Approach to Sexual Violence

    Sexual violence on college and university campuses in Canada and the United States has been an unsettling issue for several decades. However, the understanding that politicians, policy makers, and academic administrations can no longer ignore these violations is a more recent development. This thesis investigates the management and the potential mismanagement of sexual violence policy and practice with a specific focus on one Canadian University in Southern Ontario. Intersectional feminist theory provided the conceptual framework informing this research and institutional ethnography was the methodology engaged to explore a range of university policy and practices. This research illuminates the difficulties that policy makers and students identified in the development of accessible sexual violence policies and practices and provides recommendations to help post-secondary institutions implement sexual violence policies and protocols that are more useful for students and more socially just
