    Document Distance for the Automated Expansion of Relevance Judgements for Information Retrieval Evaluation

    This paper reports the use of a document distance-based approach to automatically expand the number of available relevance judgements when these are limited and reduced to only positive judgements. This may happen, for example, when the only available judgements are extracted from a list of references in a published review paper. We compare the results on two document sets: OHSUMED, based on medical research publications, and TREC-8, based on news feeds. We show that evaluations based on these expanded relevance judgements are more reliable than those using only the initially available judgements, especially when the number of available judgements is very limited.Comment: SIGIR 2014 Workshop on Gathering Efficient Assessments of Relevanc

    Improving patient record search: A meta-data based approach

    The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is a type of meta-data found in many Electronic Patient Records. Research to explore the utility of these codes in medical Information Retrieval (IR) applications is new, and many areas of investigation remain, including the question of how reliable the assignment of the codes has been. This paper proposes two uses of the ICD codes in two different contexts of search: Pseudo-Relevance Judgments (PRJ) and Pseudo-Relevance Feedback (PRF). We find that our approach to evaluate the TREC challenge runs using simulated relevance judgments has a positive correlation with the TREC official results, and our proposed technique for performing PRF based on the ICD codes significantly outperforms a traditional PRF approach. The results are found to be consistent over the two years of queries from the TREC medical test collection

    Improving health search is a wide context which concerns the effectiveness of Information Retrieval (IR) systems (also called search engines) while providing grounds for the creation of reliable test collections. In this research we analyse IR and Text Processing methods to improve health search mainly that of Electronic Patient Records (EPR). We also propose a novel approach to evaluate IR systems, that unlike traditional IR evaluation does not rely on human relevance judgement. We find that our meta-data based method is more effective than query expansion using external knowledge sources, and that our simulated relevance judgments have a positive correlation with man-made relevance judgements

    Exploiting user signals and stochastic models to improve information retrieval systems and evaluation

    The leitmotiv throughout this thesis is represented by IR evaluation. We discuss different issues related to effectiveness measures and novel solutions that we propose to address these challenges. We start by providing a formal definition of utility-oriented measurement of retrieval effectiveness, based on the representational theory of measurement. The proposed theoretical framework contributes to a better understanding of the problem complexities, separating those due to the inherent problems in comparing systems, from those due to the expected numerical properties of measures. We then propose AWARE, a probabilistic framework for dealing with the noise and inconsistencies introduced when relevance labels are gathered with multiple crowd assessors. By modeling relevance judgements and crowd assessors as sources of uncertainty, we directly combine the performance measures computed on the ground-truth generated by each crowd assessor, instead of adopting a classification technique to merge the labels at pool level. Finally, we investigate evaluation measures able to account for user signals. We propose a new user model based on Markov chains, that allows the user to scan the result list with many degrees of freedom. We exploit this Markovian model in order to inject user models into precision, defining a new family of evaluation measures, and we embed this model as objective function of an LtR algorithm to improve system performances

    Information retrieval and text mining technologies for chemistry

    Efficient access to chemical information contained in scientific literature, patents, technical reports, or the web is a pressing need shared by researchers and patent attorneys from different chemical disciplines. Retrieval of important chemical information in most cases starts with finding relevant documents for a particular chemical compound or family. Targeted retrieval of chemical documents is closely connected to the automatic recognition of chemical entities in the text, which commonly involves the extraction of the entire list of chemicals mentioned in a document, including any associated information. In this Review, we provide a comprehensive and in-depth description of fundamental concepts, technical implementations, and current technologies for meeting these information demands. A strong focus is placed on community challenges addressing systems performance, more particularly CHEMDNER and CHEMDNER patents tasks of BioCreative IV and V, respectively. Considering the growing interest in the construction of automatically annotated chemical knowledge bases that integrate chemical information and biological data, cheminformatics approaches for mapping the extracted chemical names into chemical structures and their subsequent annotation together with text mining applications for linking chemistry with biological information are also presented.     A large volume of unstructured texts, containing valuable geographic information, is available online. This information – provided implicitly or explicitly – is useful not only for scientific studies (e.g., spatial humanities) but also for many practical applications (e.g., geographic information retrieval). Although large progress has been achieved in geographic information extraction from texts, there are still unsolved challenges and issues, ranging from methods, systems, and data, to applications and privacy. Therefore, this workshop will provide a timely opportunity to discuss the recent advances, new ideas, and concepts but also identify research gaps in geographic information extraction

    Facilitating Efficient Information Seeking in Social Media

    abstract: Online social media is popular due to its real-time nature, extensive connectivity and a large user base. This motivates users to employ social media for seeking information by reaching out to their large number of social connections. Information seeking can manifest in the form of requests for personal and time-critical information or gathering perspectives on important issues. Social media platforms are not designed for resource seeking and experience large volumes of messages, leading to requests not being fulfilled satisfactorily. Designing frameworks to facilitate efficient information seeking in social media will help users to obtain appropriate assistance for their needs and help platforms to increase user satisfaction. Several challenges exist in the way of facilitating information seeking in social media. First, the characteristics affecting the user’s response time for a question are not known, making it hard to identify prompt responders. Second, the social context in which the user has asked the question has to be determined to find personalized responders. Third, users employ rhetorical requests, which are statements having the syntax of questions, and systems assisting information seeking might be hindered from focusing on genuine questions. Fouth, social media advocates of political campaigns employ nuanced strategies to prevent users from obtaining balanced perspectives on issues of public importance. Sociological and linguistic studies on user behavior while making or responding to information seeking requests provides concepts drawing from which we can address these challenges. We propose methods to estimate the response time of the user for a given question to identify prompt responders. We compute the question specific social context an asker shares with his social connections to identify personalized responders. We draw from theories of political mobilization to model the behaviors arising from the strategies of people trying to skew perspectives.
