The Design and Implementation of the RPC Device Drivers
The RPC project group is investigating high performance communication network interface structures which are compatible with existing operating systems, in this instance SunOS 4.1 Unix. The use of parallel processing in the marshalling and unmarshalling of RPC arguments together with direct I/O to and from the user's data area and early scheduling of user processes, are expected to give a higher throughput than more traditional implementations. The network front end comprises PC based TRAM's. The Unix machine is a Sun SPARC1+ running SunOS 4.1.3. The interconnection between the two systems is by the SCSI bus. To implement this structure requires a kernel device driver to act as a bridge between the Unix environment on the SPARC station and the TRAM's in the PC. This report describes the structure and implementation of this device driver, showing the design adopted to provide multiple rpc interfaces over a single SCSI bus

The resulting streams will congest the host CPU bus, reducing access to the system's main memory, which degrades CPU performance. The purpose of this paper is to investigate ways of improving I/O subsystems of continuous media sewers. Several improved I/O subsystem architectures are presented and their performances evaluated. The proposed architectures use an existing device, namely the Intel i960RP processor. The objective of using an I/O processor is to move the stream and its control from the host processor and the main memory. The ultimate aim is to identify the requirements for an integrated I/O subsystem for a high performance scalable media-on-demand server
Securing Internet Protocol (IP) Storage: A Case Study
Storage networking technology has enjoyed strong growth in recent years, but
security concerns and threats facing networked data have grown equally fast.
Today, there are many potential threats that are targeted at storage networks,
including data modification, destruction and theft, DoS attacks, malware,
hardware theft and unauthorized access, among others. In order for a Storage
Area Network (SAN) to be secure, each of these threats must be individually
addressed. In this paper, we present a comparative study by implementing

Performance comparison between iSCSI and other hardware and software solutions
We report on our investigations on some technologies that can be used to
build disk servers and networks of disk servers using commodity hardware and
software solutions. It focuses on the performance that can be achieved by these
systems and gives measured figures for different configurations.
It is divided into two parts : iSCSI and other technologies and hardware and
software RAID solutions.
The first part studies different technologies that can be used by clients to
access disk servers using a gigabit ethernet network. It covers block access
technologies (iSCSI, hyperSCSI, ENBD). Experimental figures are given for
different numbers of clients and servers.
The second part compares a system based on 3ware hardware RAID controllers, a
system using linux software RAID and IDE cards and a system mixing both
hardware RAID and software RAID. Performance measurements for reading and

Designing behaviourally informed policies for land stewardship: A new paradigm
This paper argues the case for a new approach to the stewardship of land resources that uses behavioural science theory to support the design and application of policies that facilitate changes in behaviour by those who develop policy and the farmers who implement it. Current approaches have: focused on legally-based expert system; and have been devised by national and international bureaucracies with little or no knowledge of how land owners and managers are motivated, and how they think, behave and operate as stewards of their natural resources. A review of current approaches from the social scientific literature is provided, with a particular focus on principles from social psychology. This is followed by an examination of how these principles can be applied to influence behaviour related to land restoration and soil conservation. Examples of the problems with traditional approaches and the evolution of new approaches with full engagement of farmers as the delivery agents are provided from within the European Union, Iceland and Scotland. In the light of these examples and emerging thinking in other parts of the world, the paper sets out the basis for a new approach based on behavioural science theory and application, reinforcing the arguments already made in the literature for a social license for farming
