    Get PDF
This paper develops an energy management platform for intelligent buildings using a SCADA system (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition). This SCADA system integrates different types of information coming from the several technologies present in modern buildings (control of ventilation, temperature, illumination, etc.). The developed control strategy implements an hierarchical cascade controller where inner loops are performed by local PLCs (Programmable Logic Controller), and the outer loop is managed by a centralized SCADA system, which interacts with the entire local PLC network. In this paper a Predictive Controller is implemented above the centralized SCADA platform. Tests applied to the control of temperature and luminosity in huge-area rooms are presented. The developed Predictive Controller optimizes the satisfaction of user explicit preferences coming from several distributed user-interfaces, subjected to the overall constraints of energy waste minimization. In order to run the Predictive Controller with the SCADA platform a communication channel was developed to allow communication between the SCADA system and the MATLAB application where the Predictive Controller runs

Alarm systems play a vital role in maintaining the safe operation in process plant. Moreover, the safety and efficiency of a plant's operation is assured by the usage of a reliable and user friendly alarm system. In this project, the main objective is to introduce an alarm feature inside the SCADA system. Identification of suitable guidelines in designing a good alarm system display is also part of the project's objective. Introduction of alarm feature inside the SCADA system is done by putting the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to Assembly Cell-200 Trainer. Here, the SCADA system is equipped with an alarm system as the mean to monitor and control the trainer. The alarm design adopts the available alarm system guidelines as to figure out and judge the most suitable guidelines to be applied in this project. This exercise proves that general guidelines (e.g., use of an alarm philosophy) are essential in developing this projects. However, detailed guidelines (e.g., colour coding and symbol features) should be used more carefully and consistent to ensure the creation of understandable and recognizable display. From this project, a properly designed alarm system is developed, which provides the operators with enough information to prevent any abnormalities, fault conditions or undesired errors in the plant. This project also summarizes the principal guidelines to consider when designing and developing alarms in SCADA environment

SCADA System Maintenance: An Often Overlooked Necessity

The design and implementation of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system is typically undertaken by expert engineers and integration contractors. In order to provide a robust and reliable SCADA system, good design and installation practices are required. Preserving the initial SCADA system reliability requires good maintenance. Unfortunately, SCADA maintenance is often overlooked or underestimated. There are two potential providers for SCADA maintenance activities. Some SCADA maintenance activities are best provided by the developer or installer of the SCADA system, before closing out a project contract. Other SCADA maintenance requirements are best provided by the irrigation district or SCADA system owner. Because SCADA systems are typically custom assemblies of hardware and software, each one is unique. However, there exists an almost universal set of fundamental maintenance requirements that is not always a priority during the SCADA system installation and commissioning phases. When the most basic SCADA maintenance requirements are not possessed, there are two possible results: SCADA system performance deteriorates, and long-term maintenance becomes overly expensive. This paper introduces a set of fundamental items that are necessary for long-term SCADA system maintenance, in addition to the most basic necessity: an adequate maintenance budget

Towards a Layered Architectural View for Security Analysis in SCADA Systems

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems support and control the operation of many critical infrastructures that our society depend on, such as power grids. Since SCADA systems become a target for cyber attacks and the potential impact of a successful attack could lead to disastrous consequences in the physical world, ensuring the security of these systems is of vital importance. A fundamental prerequisite to securing a SCADA system is a clear understanding and a consistent view of its architecture. However, because of the complexity and scale of SCADA systems, this is challenging to acquire. In this paper, we propose a layered architectural view for SCADA systems, which aims at building a common ground among stakeholders and supporting the implementation of security analysis. In order to manage the complexity and scale, we define four interrelated architectural layers, and uses the concept of viewpoints to focus on a subset of the system. We indicate the applicability of our approach in the context of SCADA system security analysis.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Supervisory control and also information purchase (SCADA) systems, become part of commercial control system (ICS), have actually been playing vital duties in real-time commercial automation as well as controls. Via the development of 3rd generation, or networks based system, SCADA systems are linked to virtually kinds of networks such as wired, cordless, as well as mobile as well as satellite interaction, however safety and security is still a huge difficulty for SCADA system while interacting within. Web of points (IoT) is a common system, a brand-new breakthrough improvement, for reliable SCADA system, where billions of network tools, with wise picking up abilities, are networked online gain access to. Implementation of wise IoT system, SCADA system will substantially enhance system effectiveness, scalability, and also lower expense. Protection is still a significant concern for both-, as they were originally developed with no concern as well as demands of safety. This research study designed IoT-SCADA system as well as released a safety and security system, using of cryptography based formula, which supplied a protected transmission network while each time interaction happened, in between the area tools in the SCADA system

Presented at SCADA and related technologies for irrigation district modernization: a USCID water management conference on October 26-29, 2005 in Vancouver, Washington. The Bureau of Reclamation's Western Colorado Area Office has been working on a canal modernization project on the Grand Valley Project for roughly 11 years. During that period we have built seven new check structures, a pumping plant, made several modifications to structures along the canal and, finally installed a SCADA system to accompany automation of check structures and pumps. The cast of characters in implementing our SCADA system was the water user organization, the Cal Poly Irrigation Training and Research Center (ITRC), the SCADA "integrator," and the Bureau of Reclamation. The concept of a turnkey SCADA system is that you outline what you want your SCADA system to be able to do, write technical specifications to achieve that objective, and then hire a SCADA integrator to make it happen. Is it plausible that the technical specifications can explain the existing system to the extent an integrator can accurately estimate the cost of the SCADA system? Did the person writing the technical specifications understand what SCADA can and cannot do? Did that person understand what the water users wanted the system to be able to do? There are many steps to implementing a SCADA system. The next step of often guided by what happened on the last step. We would like to share our experience for having this cast produce a final product and what steps we took along the way. Hopefully, your path to a final product will be more direct than ours. This paper will discuss the process used to implement a canal modernization program, which included a SCADA system, and more importantly some of the lessons learned. But before discussing "turnkey" SCADA it is important to provide a brief background

This paper develops an energy management system with integration of smart meters for electricity consumers in a smart grid context. The integration of two types of smart meters (SM) are developed: i) consumer owned SM and ii) distributor owned SM. The consumer owned SM runs over a wireless platform - ZigBee protocol and the distributor owned SM uses the wired environment - ModBus protocol. The SM are connected to a SCADA system (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) that supervises a network of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC). The SCADA system/ PLC network integrates different types of information coming from the several technologies present in modern buildings. The developed control strategy implements an hierarchical cascade controller where inner loops are performed by local PLCs, and the outer loop is managed by a centralized SCADA system, which interacts with the entire local PLC network. In order to implement advanced controllers, a communication channel was developed to allow the communication between the SCADA system and the MATLAB software

Kelulut honey is a unique Malaysian food that has beneficial components and high potential in many health aspects. In commercial processing plant, honey is usually subjected to thermal treatment, where its quality is compromised due to unstable and thermolabile components. Therefore, double boiling was chosen as it does not exert significant heat, thus minimizes damage done. The quality was determined after treated by double boiling technique at optimized condition. Three different sources of Kelulut honey based on the main types of foods consumed by the bees (Coconut, Multifloral and Wild Flowers) were tested. Kelulut honey samples were subjected to an optimized condition at 60 °C for 35 minutes. Thermal treatment at the same condition was conducted for comparison purpose. The results showed that double boiling treatment increased the total phenolic content of Kelulut-C honey significantly, from 2430.78 ± 12.24 to 2711.10 ± 23.00 mg GAE/100 g. The treatment also significantly increased the brown pigment for both Kelulut-C and Kelulut-W honey by 11.11 ± 0.00% and 27.27 ± 0.00%, respectively. Whereas, the pH and moisture content of all samples remain unchanged with no formation of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was observed. A preliminary four-week storage study showed that double boiling treatment improves physicochemical properties of Kelulut honey as compared to the untreated samples for all three types of Kelulut honey tested. Meanwhile, a room temperature (27 °C) condition leads to an improvement of antioxidant properties as compared to cold temperature (4 °C). In conclusion, double boiling treatment has established itself as a good alternative processing method for Kelulut honey, hence increasing the possibility to bring forward Kelulut honey as a unique source for the application in food and beverages industries
