Hybrid Transceiver Optimization for Multi-Hop Communications
Multi-hop communication with the aid of large-scale antenna arrays will play
a vital role in future emergence communication systems. In this paper, we
investigate amplify-and-forward based and multiple-input multiple-output
assisted multi-hop communication, in which all nodes employ hybrid
transceivers. Moreover, channel errors are taken into account in our hybrid
transceiver design. Based on the matrix-monotonic optimization framework, the
optimal structures of the robust hybrid transceivers are derived. By utilizing
these optimal structures, the optimizations of analog transceivers and digital
transceivers can be separated without loss of optimality. This fact greatly
simplifies the joint optimization of analog and digital transceivers. Since the
optimization of analog transceivers under unit-modulus constraints is
non-convex, a projection type algorithm is proposed for analog transceiver
optimization to overcome this difficulty. Based on the derived analog
transceivers, the optimal digital transceivers can then be derived using
matrix-monotonic optimization. Numeral results obtained demonstrate the
performance advantages of the proposed hybrid transceiver designs over other

Cavity-enhanced second harmonic generation via nonlinear-overlap optimization
We describe an approach based on topology optimization that enables automatic
discovery of wavelength-scale photonic structures for achieving high-efficiency
second-harmonic generation (SHG). A key distinction from previous formulation
and designs that seek to maximize Purcell factors at individual frequencies is
that our method not only aims to achieve frequency matching (across an entire
octave) and large radiative lifetimes, but also optimizes the equally important
nonlinear--coupling figure of merit , involving a complicated
spatial overlap-integral between modes. We apply this method to the particular
problem of optimizing micropost and grating-slab cavities (one-dimensional
multilayered structures) and demonstrate that a variety of material platforms
can support modes with the requisite frequencies, large lifetimes ,
small modal volumes , and extremely large , leading to orders of magnitude enhancements in SHG efficiency
compared to state of the art photonic designs. Such giant
alleviate the need for ultra-narrow linewidths and thus pave the way for
wavelength-scale SHG devices with faster operating timescales and higher
tolerance to fabrication imperfections
Simultaneous Optimal Uncertainty Apportionment and Robust Design Optimization of Systems Governed by Ordinary Differential Equations
The inclusion of uncertainty in design is of paramount practical importance because all real-life systems are affected by it. Designs that ignore uncertainty often lead to poor robustness, suboptimal performance, and higher build costs. Treatment of small geometric uncertainty in the context of manufacturing tolerances is a well studied topic. Traditional sequential design methodologies have recently been replaced by concurrent optimal design methodologies where optimal system parameters are simultaneously determined along with optimally allocated tolerances; this allows to reduce manufacturing costs while increasing performance. However, the state of the art approaches remain limited in that they can only treat geometric related uncertainties restricted to be small in magnitude.
This work proposes a novel framework to perform robust design optimization concurrently with optimal uncertainty apportionment for dynamical systems governed by ordinary differential equations. The proposed framework considerably expands the capabilities of contemporary methods by enabling the treatment of both geometric and non-geometric uncertainties in a unified manner. Additionally, uncertainties are allowed to be large in magnitude and the governing constitutive relations may be highly nonlinear.
In the proposed framework, uncertainties are modeled using Generalized Polynomial Chaos and are solved quantitatively using a least-square collocation method. The computational efficiency of this approach allows statistical moments of the uncertain system to be explicitly included in the optimization-based design process. The framework formulates design problems as constrained multi-objective optimization problems, thus enabling the characterization of a Pareto optimal trade-off curve that is off-set from the traditional deterministic optimal trade-off curve. The Pareto off-set is shown to be a result of the additional statistical moment information formulated in the objective and constraint relations that account for the system uncertainties. Therefore, the Pareto trade-off curve from the new framework characterizes the entire family of systems within the probability space; consequently, designers are able to produce robust and optimally performing systems at an optimal manufacturing cost.
A kinematic tolerance analysis case-study is presented first to illustrate how the proposed methodology can be applied to treat geometric tolerances. A nonlinear vehicle suspension design problem, subject to parametric uncertainty, illustrates the capability of the new framework to produce an optimal design at an optimal manufacturing cost, accounting for the entire family of systems within the associated probability space. This case-study highlights the general nature of the new framework which is capable of optimally allocating uncertainties of multiple types and with large magnitudes in a single calculation

d-QPSO: A Quantum-Behaved Particle Swarm Technique for Finding D-Optimal Designs With Discrete and Continuous Factors and a Binary Response
Identifying optimal designs for generalized linear models with a binary response can be a challengingtask, especially when there are both discrete and continuous independent factors in the model. Theoreticalresults rarely exist for such models, and for the handful that do, they usually come with restrictive assumptions.In this article, we propose the d-QPSO algorithm, a modified version of quantum-behaved particleswarm optimization, to find a variety of D-optimal approximate and exact designs for experiments withdiscrete and continuous factors and a binary response. We show that the d-QPSO algorithm can efficientlyfind locally D-optimal designs even for experiments with a large number of factors and robust pseudo-Bayesian designs when nominal values for the model parameters are not available. Additionally, we investigaterobustness properties of the d-QPSO algorithm-generated designs to variousmodel assumptions andprovide real applications to design a bio-plastics odor removal experiment, an electronic static experiment,and a 10-factor car refueling experiment.
