What's the Situation with Intelligent Mesh Generation: A Survey and Perspectives
Intelligent Mesh Generation (IMG) represents a novel and promising field of
research, utilizing machine learning techniques to generate meshes. Despite its
relative infancy, IMG has significantly broadened the adaptability and
practicality of mesh generation techniques, delivering numerous breakthroughs
and unveiling potential future pathways. However, a noticeable void exists in
the contemporary literature concerning comprehensive surveys of IMG methods.
This paper endeavors to fill this gap by providing a systematic and thorough
survey of the current IMG landscape. With a focus on 113 preliminary IMG
methods, we undertake a meticulous analysis from various angles, encompassing
core algorithm techniques and their application scope, agent learning
objectives, data types, targeted challenges, as well as advantages and
limitations. We have curated and categorized the literature, proposing three
unique taxonomies based on key techniques, output mesh unit elements, and
relevant input data types. This paper also underscores several promising future
research directions and challenges in IMG. To augment reader accessibility, a

Minimally Interactive Segmentation with Application to Human Placenta in Fetal MR Images
Placenta segmentation from fetal Magnetic Resonance (MR) images is important for fetal surgical planning. However, accurate segmentation results are difficult to achieve for automatic methods, due to sparse acquisition, inter-slice motion, and the widely varying position and shape of the placenta among pregnant women. Interactive methods have been widely used to get more accurate and robust results. A good interactive segmentation method should achieve high accuracy, minimize user interactions with low variability among users, and be computationally fast. Exploiting recent advances in machine learning, I explore a family of new interactive methods for placenta segmentation from fetal MR images. I investigate the combination of user interactions with learning from a single image or a large set of images. For learning from a single image, I propose novel Online Random Forests to efficiently leverage user interactions for the segmentation of 2D and 3D fetal MR images. I also investigate co-segmentation of multiple volumes of the same patient with 4D Graph Cuts. For learning from a large set of images, I first propose a deep learning-based framework that combines user interactions with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) based on geodesic distance transforms to achieve accurate segmentation and good interactivity. I then propose image-specific fine-tuning to make CNNs adaptive to different individual images and able to segment previously unseen objects. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithms outperform traditional interactive segmentation methods in terms of accuracy and interactivity. Therefore, they might be suitable for segmentation of the placenta in planning systems for fetal and maternal surgery, and for rapid characterization of the placenta by MR images. I also demonstrate that they can be applied to the segmentation of other organs from 2D and 3D images

Surface modelling for 2D imagery
Vector graphics provides powerful tools for drawing scalable 2D imagery. With
the rise of mobile computers, of different types of displays and image resolutions,
vector graphics is receiving an increasing amount of attention. However, vector
graphics is not the leading framework for creating and manipulating 2D imagery.
The reason for this reluctance of employing vector graphical frameworks is that it
is difficult to handle complex behaviour of colour across the 2D domain.
A challenging problem within vector graphics is to define smooth colour functions
across the image. In previous work, two approaches exist. The first approach,
known as diffusion curves, diffuses colours from a set of input curves and points.
The second approach, known as gradient meshes, defines smooth colour functions
from control meshes. These two approaches are incompatible: diffusion curves do
not support the local behaviour provided by gradient meshes and gradient meshes
do not support freeform curves as input. My research aims to narrow the gap between
diffusion curves and gradient meshes.
With this aim in mind, I propose solutions to create control meshes from freeform
curves. I demonstrate that these control meshes can be used to render a vector
primitive similar to diffusion curves using subdivision surfaces. With the use of
subdivision surfaces, instead of a diffusion process, colour gradients can be locally
controlled using colour-gradient curves associated with the input curves.
The advantage of local control is further explored in the setting of vector-centric
image processing. I demonstrate that a certain contrast enhancement profile, known
as the Cornsweet profile, can be modelled via surfaces in images. This approach
does not produce saturation artefacts related with previous filter-based methods.
Additionally, I demonstrate various approaches to artistic filtering, where the artist
locally models given artistic effects.
Gradient meshes are restricted to rectangular topology of the control meshes. I
argue that this restriction hinders the applicability of the approach and its potential
to be used with control meshes extracted from freeform curves. To this end, I
propose a mesh-based vector primitive that supports arbitrary manifold topology of
the mesh
Towards Data-Driven Large Scale Scientific Visualization and Exploration
Technological advances have enabled us to acquire extremely large
datasets but it remains a challenge to store, process, and extract
information from them. This dissertation builds upon recent advances
in machine learning, visualization, and user interactions to
facilitate exploration of large-scale scientific datasets. First, we
use data-driven approaches to computationally identify regions of
interest in the datasets. Second, we use visual presentation for
effective user comprehension. Third, we provide interactions for
human users to integrate domain knowledge and semantic information
into this exploration process.
Our research shows how to extract, visualize, and explore informative
regions on very large 2D landscape images, 3D volumetric datasets,
high-dimensional volumetric mouse brain datasets with thousands of
spatially-mapped gene expression profiles, and geospatial trajectories
that evolve over time. The contribution of this dissertation include:
(1) We introduce a sliding-window saliency model that discovers
regions of user interest in very large images; (2) We develop visual
segmentation of intensity-gradient histograms to identify meaningful
components from volumetric datasets; (3) We extract boundary surfaces
from a wealth of volumetric gene expression mouse brain profiles to
personalize the reference brain atlas; (4) We show how to efficiently
cluster geospatial trajectories by mapping each sequence of locations
to a high-dimensional point with the kernel distance framework.
We aim to discover patterns, relationships, and anomalies that would
lead to new scientific, engineering, and medical advances. This work
represents one of the first steps toward better visual understanding
of large-scale scientific data by combining machine learning and human
intelligence
Designing Polymer Materials for Improved Additive Manufacturing
Currently, two of the most used additive manufacturing methods for polymers are selective laser sintering (SLS) and fused filament fabrication (FFF). Although at high market size, they both have imperfections. The materials for SLS are limited and the objects manufactured by FFF existing anisotropic behavior. Targeting on these drawbacks, this thesis has proposed a novel method to prepare polypropylene (PP) microsphere which is suitable for SLS with low cost and scalable potential; and a novel material with polycarbonate as matrix that has shown a decrease in anisotropy after FFF printing.
The PP microsphere in this thesis was prepared via liquid-liquid phase separation, by changing the processing condition such as temperature, solution concentration and molecular wight, we have the capability to control the size of microsphere. The size of resulting particles was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and analyzed by ImageJ. The relationship between processing condition and particle size has been correlated to phase diagram, in which a higher equilibrium polymer-rich phase concentration will result in a larger particle size. We have also shown the versatility of this method by successfully prepared SLS suitable PP powders from a recycled pill bottle.
The polycarbonate matrix has been blended with photoinitiator and crosslinker by a single screw extruder. We have applied a customized UV-LED functionalized 3D printer to print our blend. Tensile strength has been used as an indicator of anisotropy. Although decrease in anisotropy for some samples, the result indicates a competition between interlayer crosslink and in-bulk crosslink. For interlayer crosslink, it will decrease anisotropy by the crosslink on the interface with adjacent layers of the oxidation product of polycarbonate. The in-bulk crosslink, on the other hand, will increase anisotropy by crosslink in the filament and constraint the flow of polymer melts during FFF
Interactive Medical Image Registration With Multigrid Methods and Bounded Biharmonic Functions
Interactive image registration is important in some medical applications since automatic image registration is often slow and sometimes error-prone. We consider interactive registration methods that incorporate user-specified local transforms around control handles. The deformation between handles is interpolated by some smooth functions, minimizing some variational energies. Besides smoothness, we expect the impact of a control handle to be local. Therefore we choose bounded biharmonic weight functions to blend local transforms, a cutting-edge technique in computer graphics. However, medical images are usually huge, and this technique takes a lot of time that makes itself impracticable for interactive image registration.
To expedite this process, we use a multigrid active set method to solve bounded biharmonic functions (BBF). The multigrid approach is for two scenarios, refining the active set from coarse to fine resolutions, and solving the linear systems constrained by working active sets. We\u27ve implemented both weighted Jacobi method and successive over-relaxation (SOR) in the multigrid solver. Since the problem has box constraints, we cannot directly use regular updates in Jacobi and SOR methods. Instead, we choose a descent step size and clamp the update to satisfy the box constraints. We explore the ways to choose step sizes and discuss their relation to the spectral radii of the iteration matrices. The relaxation factors, which are closely related to step sizes, are estimated by analyzing the eigenvalues of the bilaplacian matrices. We give a proof about the termination of our algorithm and provide some theoretical error bounds.
Another minor problem we address is to register big images on GPU with limited memory. We\u27ve implemented an image registration algorithm with virtual image slices on GPU. An image slice is treated similarly to a page in virtual memory. We execute a wavefront of subtasks together to reduce the number of data transfers.
Our main contribution is a fast multigrid method for interactive medical image registration that uses bounded biharmonic functions to blend local transforms. We report a novel multigrid approach to refine active set quickly and use clamped updates based on weighted Jacobi and SOR. This multigrid method can be used to efficiently solve other quadratic programs that have active sets distributed over continuous regions
Neural radiance fields in the industrial and robotics domain: applications, research opportunities and use cases
The proliferation of technologies, such as extended reality (XR), has
increased the demand for high-quality three-dimensional (3D) graphical
representations. Industrial 3D applications encompass computer-aided design
(CAD), finite element analysis (FEA), scanning, and robotics. However, current
methods employed for industrial 3D representations suffer from high
implementation costs and reliance on manual human input for accurate 3D
modeling. To address these challenges, neural radiance fields (NeRFs) have
emerged as a promising approach for learning 3D scene representations based on
provided training 2D images. Despite a growing interest in NeRFs, their
potential applications in various industrial subdomains are still unexplored.
In this paper, we deliver a comprehensive examination of NeRF industrial
applications while also providing direction for future research endeavors. We
also present a series of proof-of-concept experiments that demonstrate the
potential of NeRFs in the industrial domain. These experiments include
NeRF-based video compression techniques and using NeRFs for 3D motion
estimation in the context of collision avoidance. In the video compression
experiment, our results show compression savings up to 48\% and 74\% for
resolutions of 1920x1080 and 300x168, respectively. The motion estimation
experiment used a 3D animation of a robotic arm to train Dynamic-NeRF (D-NeRF)
and achieved an average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of disparity map with
the value of 23 dB and an structural similarity index measure (SSIM) 0.97
Non-isometric 3D shape registration.
3D shape registration is an important task in computer graphics and computer vision. It has been widely used in the area of film industry, 3D animation, video games and AR/VR assets creation. Manually creating the 3D model of a character from scratch is tedious and time consuming, and it can only be completed by professional trained artists. With the development of 3D geometry acquisition technology, it becomes easier and cheaper to capture high-resolution and highly detailed 3D geometries. However, the scanned data are often incomplete or noisy and therefore cannot be employed directly. To deal with the above two problems, one typical and efficient solution is to deform an existing high-quality model (template) to fit the scanned data (target). Shape registration as an essential technique to do so has been arousing intensive attention. In last decades, various shape registration approaches have been proposed for accurate template fitting. However, there are still some remaining challenges. It is well known that the template can be largely different with the target in respect of size and pose. With the large (usually non-isometric) deformation between them, the shear distortion can easily occur, which may lead to poor results, such as degenerated triangles, fold-overs. Before deforming the template towards the target, reliable correspondences between them should be found first. Incorrect correspondences give the wrong deformation guidance, which can also easily produce fold-overs. As mentioned before, the target always comes with noise. This is the part we want to filter out and try not to fit the template on it. Hence, non-isometric shape registration robust to noise is highly desirable in the scene of geometry modelling from the scanned data. In this PhD research, we address existing challenges in shape registration, including how to prevent the deformation distortion, how to reduce the foldover occurrence and how to deal with the noise in the target. Novel methods including consistent as-similar as-possible surface deformation and robust Huber-L1 surface registration are proposed, which are validated through experimental comparison with state-of-the-arts. The deformation technique plays an important role in shape registration. In this research, a consistent as similar-as-possible (CASAP) surface deformation approach is proposed. Starting from investigating the continuous deformation energy, we analyse the existing term to make the discrete energy converge to the continuous one, whose property we called as energy consistency. Based on the deformation method, a novel CASAP non-isometric surface registration method is proposed. The proposed registration method well preserves the angles of triangles in the template surface so that least distortion is introduced during the surface deformation and thus reduce the risk of fold-over and self-intersection. To reduce the noise influence, a Huber-L1 based non-isometric surface registration is proposed, where a Huber-L1 regularized model constrained on the transformation variation and position difference. The proposed method is robust to noise and produces piecewise smooth results while still preserving fine details on the target. We evaluate and validate our methods through extensive experiments, whose results have demonstrated that the proposed methods in this thesis are more accurate and robust to noise in comparison of the state-of-the arts and enable us to produce high quality models with little efforts
