Fine-Grained Product Class Recognition for Assisted Shopping
Assistive solutions for a better shopping experience can improve the quality
of life of people, in particular also of visually impaired shoppers. We present
a system that visually recognizes the fine-grained product classes of items on
a shopping list, in shelves images taken with a smartphone in a grocery store.
Our system consists of three components: (a) We automatically recognize useful
text on product packaging, e.g., product name and brand, and build a mapping of
words to product classes based on the large-scale GroceryProducts dataset. When
the user populates the shopping list, we automatically infer the product class
of each entered word. (b) We perform fine-grained product class recognition
when the user is facing a shelf. We discover discriminative patches on product
packaging to differentiate between visually similar product classes and to
increase the robustness against continuous changes in product design. (c) We
continuously improve the recognition accuracy through active learning. Our
experiments show the robustness of the proposed method against cross-domain
challenges, and the scalability to an increasing number of products with
minimal re-training.Comment: Accepted at ICCV Workshop on Assistive Computer Vision and Robotics

From Codes to Patterns: Designing Interactive Decoration for Tableware
ABSTRACT
We explore the idea of making aesthetic decorative patterns that contain multiple visual codes. We chart an iterative collaboration with ceramic designers and a restaurant to refine a recognition technology to work reliably on ceramics, produce a pattern book of designs, and prototype sets of tableware and a mobile app to enhance a dining experience. We document how the designers learned to work with and creatively exploit the technology, enriching their patterns with embellishments and backgrounds and developing strategies for embedding codes into complex designs. We discuss the potential and challenges of interacting with such patterns. We argue for a transition from designing âcodes to patternsâ that reflects the skills of designers alongside the development of new technologies
Efficient storage and decoding of SURF feature points
Practical use of SURF feature points in large-scale indexing and retrieval engines requires an efficient means for storing and decoding these features. This paper investigates several methods for compression and storage of SURF feature points, considering both storage consumption and disk-read efficiency. We compare each scheme with a baseline plain-text encoding scheme as used by many existing SURF implementations. Our final proposed scheme significantly reduces both the time required to load and decode feature points, and the space required to store them on disk
