Crossing Generative Adversarial Networks for Cross-View Person Re-identification
Person re-identification (\textit{re-id}) refers to matching pedestrians
across disjoint yet non-overlapping camera views. The most effective way to
match these pedestrians undertaking significant visual variations is to seek
reliably invariant features that can describe the person of interest
faithfully. Most of existing methods are presented in a supervised manner to
produce discriminative features by relying on labeled paired images in
correspondence. However, annotating pair-wise images is prohibitively expensive
in labors, and thus not practical in large-scale networked cameras. Moreover,
seeking comparable representations across camera views demands a flexible model
to address the complex distributions of images. In this work, we study the
co-occurrence statistic patterns between pairs of images, and propose to
crossing Generative Adversarial Network (Cross-GAN) for learning a joint
distribution for cross-image representations in a unsupervised manner. Given a
pair of person images, the proposed model consists of the variational
auto-encoder to encode the pair into respective latent variables, a proposed
cross-view alignment to reduce the view disparity, and an adversarial layer to
seek the joint distribution of latent representations. The learned latent
representations are well-aligned to reflect the co-occurrence patterns of
paired images. We empirically evaluate the proposed model against challenging
datasets, and our results show the importance of joint invariant features in
improving matching rates of person re-id with comparison to semi/unsupervised

Gaussian processes for modeling of facial expressions
Automated analysis of facial expressions has been gaining significant attention over the past years. This stems from the fact that it constitutes the primal step toward developing some of the next-generation computer technologies that can make an impact in many domains, ranging from medical imaging and health assessment to marketing and education. No matter the target application, the need to deploy systems under demanding, real-world conditions that can generalize well across the population is urgent. Hence, careful consideration of numerous factors has to be taken prior to designing such a system. The work presented in this thesis focuses on tackling two important problems in automated analysis of facial expressions: (i) view-invariant facial expression analysis; (ii) modeling of the structural patterns in the face, in terms of well coordinated facial muscle movements. Driven by the necessity for efficient and accurate inference mechanisms we explore machine learning techniques based on the probabilistic framework of Gaussian processes (GPs). Our ultimate goal is to design powerful models that can efficiently handle imagery with spontaneously displayed facial expressions, and explain in detail the complex configurations behind the human face in real-world situations. To effectively decouple the head pose and expression in the presence of large out-of-plane head rotations we introduce a manifold learning approach based on multi-view learning strategies. Contrary to the majority of existing methods that typically treat the numerous poses as individual problems, in this model we first learn a discriminative manifold shared by multiple views of a facial expression. Subsequently, we perform facial expression classification in the expression manifold. Hence, the pose normalization problem is solved by aligning the facial expressions from different poses in a common latent space. We demonstrate that the recovered manifold can efficiently generalize to various poses and expressions even from a small amount of training data, while also being largely robust to corrupted image features due to illumination variations. State-of-the-art performance is achieved in the task of facial expression classification of basic emotions.
The methods that we propose for learning the structure in the configuration of the muscle movements represent some of the first attempts in the field of analysis and intensity estimation of facial expressions. In these models, we extend our multi-view approach to exploit relationships not only in the input features but also in the multi-output labels. The structure of the outputs is imposed into the recovered manifold either from heuristically defined hard constraints, or in an auto-encoded manner, where the structure is learned automatically from the input data. The resulting models are proven to be robust to data with imbalanced expression categories, due to our proposed Bayesian learning of the target manifold. We also propose a novel regression approach based on product of GP experts where we take into account people's individual expressiveness in order to adapt the learned models on each subject. We demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed models on the task of facial expression recognition and intensity estimation.Open Acces
A Cross-Season Correspondence Dataset for Robust Semantic Segmentation
In this paper, we present a method to utilize 2D-2D point matches between
images taken during different image conditions to train a convolutional neural
network for semantic segmentation. Enforcing label consistency across the
matches makes the final segmentation algorithm robust to seasonal changes. We
describe how these 2D-2D matches can be generated with little human interaction
by geometrically matching points from 3D models built from images. Two
cross-season correspondence datasets are created providing 2D-2D matches across
seasonal changes as well as from day to night. The datasets are made publicly
available to facilitate further research. We show that adding the
correspondences as extra supervision during training improves the segmentation
performance of the convolutional neural network, making it more robust to

ECO: Egocentric Cognitive Mapping
We present a new method to localize a camera within a previously unseen
environment perceived from an egocentric point of view. Although this is, in
general, an ill-posed problem, humans can effortlessly and efficiently
determine their relative location and orientation and navigate into a
previously unseen environments, e.g., finding a specific item in a new grocery
store. To enable such a capability, we design a new egocentric representation,
which we call ECO (Egocentric COgnitive map). ECO is biologically inspired, by
the cognitive map that allows human navigation, and it encodes the surrounding
visual semantics with respect to both distance and orientation. ECO possesses
three main properties: (1) reconfigurability: complex semantics and geometry is
captured via the synthesis of atomic visual representations (e.g., image
patch); (2) robustness: the visual semantics are registered in a geometrically
consistent way (e.g., aligning with respect to the gravity vector,
frontalizing, and rescaling to canonical depth), thus enabling us to learn
meaningful atomic representations; (3) adaptability: a domain adaptation
framework is designed to generalize the learned representation without manual
calibration. As a proof-of-concept, we use ECO to localize a camera within
real-world scenes---various grocery stores---and demonstrate performance
improvements when compared to existing semantic localization approaches
Subspace Representations and Learning for Visual Recognition
Pervasive and affordable sensor and storage technology enables the acquisition of an ever-rising amount of visual data. The ability to extract semantic information by interpreting, indexing and searching visual data is impacting domains such as surveillance, robotics, intelligence, human- computer interaction, navigation, healthcare, and several others. This further stimulates the investigation of automated extraction techniques that are more efficient, and robust against the many sources of noise affecting the already complex visual data, which is carrying the semantic information of interest. We address the problem by designing novel visual data representations, based on learning data subspace decompositions that are invariant against noise, while being informative for the task at hand. We use this guiding principle to tackle several visual recognition problems, including detection and recognition of human interactions from surveillance video, face recognition in unconstrained environments, and domain generalization for object recognition.;By interpreting visual data with a simple additive noise model, we consider the subspaces spanned by the model portion (model subspace) and the noise portion (variation subspace). We observe that decomposing the variation subspace against the model subspace gives rise to the so-called parity subspace. Decomposing the model subspace against the variation subspace instead gives rise to what we name invariant subspace. We extend the use of kernel techniques for the parity subspace. This enables modeling the highly non-linear temporal trajectories describing human behavior, and performing detection and recognition of human interactions. In addition, we introduce supervised low-rank matrix decomposition techniques for learning the invariant subspace for two other tasks. We learn invariant representations for face recognition from grossly corrupted images, and we learn object recognition classifiers that are invariant to the so-called domain bias.;Extensive experiments using the benchmark datasets publicly available for each of the three tasks, show that learning representations based on subspace decompositions invariant to the sources of noise lead to results comparable or better than the state-of-the-art
