Research on virtual worlds and environments has increased tremendously in the last decade, giving birth to a variety of applications spanning over several areas such as virtual reality, human-computer interaction, psychology and sociology, among others. In this paper we elaborate on one issue affecting the areas of virtual worlds and robotics: the lack of standard mechanisms for communication and interaction between virtual worlds and robots. We contribute to the scientific community our thoughts on the possibility of creating a standard platform that enable the seamless interaction between these heterogeneous, distributed devices and systems. Hopefully, these ideas will turn, in the future, into applications that not only address the challenges in communication, control and interoperability of such systems (robots and virtual worlds), but also help to improve the standard of life of people through tangible products and services

Collaborative remote laboratory in virtual wolrd

International audiencewe present in this paper a remote lab that is generic, i.e independent to the controlled device thanks to a semantic web approach. The graphical user interface and functionalities are described thanks to ontology. The proposed remote lab is also collaborative since it is prove that the collaboration takes an important place in the learning process. The collaboration is made in a virtual world called wonderland allowing sharing of information and audio channels between users' avatars

The focus of this doctoral dissertation is on exploring the potentials of virtual worlds, for applications in research and education. Regarding this, there are two central aspects that are explored in the dissertation. The first one considers the concept of autonomous agents, and agent theory in general, in the context of virtual worlds. The second aspect is related to the educational applications of virtual worlds, while especially focusing on the concept of virtual laboratories. An introduction to basic terminology related to the subject is given at the start of the dissertation. After that, a thorough analysis of the role of agents in virtual worlds is presented. This, among others, includes the analysis of the techniques that shape the agent’s behavior. The development of the virtual gamified educational system, specially dedicated to agents is then presented in the dissertation, along with a thorough description. While, in the end, analysis of the concept of virtual laboratories in STE (Science, Technology, and Engineering) disciplines is performed, and existing solutions are evaluated according to the criteria defined in the dissertation.

    Robotics in Second Life

Virtual worlds are quickly growing; both in interactivity and realism, users can experience through their avatars, and the number of actual users is continuously growing as well. Among the virtual worlds, Second Life (SL) is perhaps one of the most famous. This article presents a project whose aim is to use SL as a means to spread robotics culture as well as to investigate possible paradigms of social interaction in heterogeneous communities of robots and humans. As a first step, a point of presence has been established in SL through the development of a building to represent and host the activities of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS). In addition, simplified models and behaviors of some robots have been reproduced and used for demonstrations both within and around the building itself
