ELICA: An Automated Tool for Dynamic Extraction of Requirements Relevant Information
Requirements elicitation requires extensive knowledge and deep understanding
of the problem domain where the final system will be situated. However, in many
software development projects, analysts are required to elicit the requirements
from an unfamiliar domain, which often causes communication barriers between
analysts and stakeholders. In this paper, we propose a requirements ELICitation
Aid tool (ELICA) to help analysts better understand the target application
domain by dynamic extraction and labeling of requirements-relevant knowledge.
To extract the relevant terms, we leverage the flexibility and power of
Weighted Finite State Transducers (WFSTs) in dynamic modeling of natural
language processing tasks. In addition to the information conveyed through
text, ELICA captures and processes non-linguistic information about the
intention of speakers such as their confidence level, analytical tone, and
emotions. The extracted information is made available to the analysts as a set
of labeled snippets with highlighted relevant terms which can also be exported
as an artifact of the Requirements Engineering (RE) process. The application
and usefulness of ELICA are demonstrated through a case study. This study shows
how pre-existing relevant information about the application domain and the
information captured during an elicitation meeting, such as the conversation
and stakeholders' intentions, can be captured and used to support analysts

A risk management framework for user-generated content on public display systems
Digital public displays can represent a powerful medium for personal expression and situated communication. However, before they can actually serve as an effective communication medium, they need to move towards more open models, in which user-generated content can play a more prominent role in their relevance and value proposition. The key challenge, however, is how to share control with users while being able to guarantee that published content matches the social expectations of a place and the goals of the display owner. In this study, we explore a risk management methodology as a comprehensive approach to this issue. We propose a framework that supports the systematic elicitation of the risks involved, their prioritisation, and the selection of the specific combination of moderation techniques that is able to reduce risk to a level that is deemed acceptable, while minimising the moderation effort and the impact on the willingness of users to publish their content. With this overall framework, we expect to help display owners to reason about the moderation needs of their displays and the best mapping between those needs and various moderation techniques.This work has been supported by FCT-Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia-within the Project Scope: UID/CEC/00319/2019
A diversity-based approach to requirements tracing in new product development.
Production models emerged in recent times have stressed the need to face complex production contexts, characterized in particular by the rise in internal and environmental variability. In this work, a stylization of some elements concerning analysis and design of new products is given, and in particular those that involve definition and transfer phases in the development of innovative goods, where change and variability in requirements along development process are often high. This analysis has a twofold goal: first, to supply a conceptual frame for the close examination of some dynamics of requirement's integration into an artifact's design, in order to give account of their variability along development cycle; on the other side, to propose an approach based on simple similarity metrics, to be applied to linguistic descriptions of artifacts in the early phases of development process, in order to identify components in an artifact that undergo larger variability and therefore are to be paid more attention in the subsequent phases of life cycle.
AI as a Methodology for Supporting Educational Praxis and Teacher Metacognition
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is of critical importance in education where emphasis is placed on the need to equip educators with an ability to independently generate and reflect on evidence of their practices in situ – a process also known as praxis. This paper examines existing research related to teachers’ metacognitive skills and, using two exemplar projects, it discusses the utility and relevance of AI methods of knowledge representation and knowledge elicitation as methodologies for supporting EBP. Research related to technology-enhanced communities of practice as a means for teachers to share and compare their knowledge with others is also examined. Suggestions for the key considerations in supporting teachers’ metacognition in praxis are made based on the review of literature and discussion of the specific projects, with the aim to highlight potential future research directions for AIEd. A proposal is made that a crucial part of AIEd’s future resides in its curating the role of AI as a methodology for supporting teacher training and continuous professional development, especially as relates to their developing metacognitive skills in relation to their practices
Culture-based artefacts to inform ICT design: foundations and practice
Cultural aspects frame our perception of the world and direct the many different ways people interact with things in it. For this reason, these aspects should be considered when designing technology with the purpose to positively impact people in a community. In this paper, we revisit the foundations of culture aiming to bring this concept in dialogue with design. To inform design with cultural aspects, we model reality in three levels of formality: informal, formal, and technical, and subscribe to a systemic vision that considers the technical solution as part of a more complex social system in which people live and interact. In this paper, we instantiate this theoretical and methodological view by presenting two case studies of technology design in which culture-based artefacts were employed to inform the design process. We claim that as important as including issues related to culture in the ICT design agenda—from the conception to the development, evaluation, and adoption of a technology—is the need to support the design process with adequate artefacts that help identifying cultural aspects within communities and translating them into sociotechnical requirements. We argue that a culturally informed perspective on design can go beyond an informative analysis, and can be integrated with the theoretical and methodological framework used to support design, throughout the entire design process
Design Ltd.: Renovated Myths for the Development of Socially Embedded Technologies
This paper argues that traditional and mainstream mythologies, which have
been continually told within the Information Technology domain among designers
and advocators of conceptual modelling since the 1960s in different fields of
computing sciences, could now be renovated or substituted in the mould of more
recent discourses about performativity, complexity and end-user creativity that
have been constructed across different fields in the meanwhile. In the paper,
it is submitted that these discourses could motivate IT professionals in
undertaking alternative approaches toward the co-construction of
socio-technical systems, i.e., social settings where humans cooperate to reach
common goals by means of mediating computational tools. The authors advocate
further discussion about and consolidation of some concepts in design research,
design practice and more generally Information Technology (IT) development,
like those of: task-artifact entanglement, universatility (sic) of End-User
Development (EUD) environments, bricolant/bricoleur end-user, logic of
bricolage, maieuta-designers (sic), and laissez-faire method to socio-technical
construction. Points backing these and similar concepts are made to promote
further discussion on the need to rethink the main assumptions underlying IT
design and development some fifty years later the coming of age of software and

Knowledge Elicitation Methods for Affect Modelling in Education
Research on the relationship between affect and cognition in Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIEd) brings an important dimension to our understanding of how learning occurs and how it can be facilitated. Emotions are crucial to learning, but their nature, the conditions under which they occur, and their exact impact on learning for different learners in diverse contexts still needs to be mapped out. The study of affect during learning can be challenging, because emotions are subjective, fleeting phenomena that are often difficult for learners to report accurately and for observers to perceive reliably. Context forms an integral part of learners’ affect and the study thereof. This review provides a synthesis of the current knowledge elicitation methods that are used to aid the study of learners’ affect and to inform the design of intelligent technologies for learning. Advantages and disadvantages of the specific methods are discussed along with their respective potential for enhancing research in this area, and issues related to the interpretation of data that emerges as the result of their use. References to related research are also provided together with illustrative examples of where the individual methods have been used in the past. Therefore, this review is intended as a resource for methodological decision making for those who want to study emotions and their antecedents in AIEd contexts, i.e. where the aim is to inform the design and implementation of an intelligent learning environment or to evaluate its use and educational efficacy
Improving knowledge about the risks of inappropriate uses of geospatial data by introducing a collaborative approach in the design of geospatial databases
La disponibilité accrue de l’information géospatiale est, de nos jours, une réalité que plusieurs organisations, et même le grand public, tentent de rentabiliser; la possibilité de réutilisation des jeux de données est désormais une alternative envisageable par les organisations compte tenu des économies de coûts qui en résulteraient. La qualité de données de ces jeux de données peut être variable et discutable selon le contexte d’utilisation. L’enjeu d’inadéquation à l’utilisation de ces données devient d’autant plus important lorsqu’il y a disparité entre les nombreuses expertises des utilisateurs finaux de la donnée géospatiale. La gestion des risques d’usages inappropriés de l’information géospatiale a fait l’objet de plusieurs recherches au cours des quinze dernières années. Dans ce contexte, plusieurs approches ont été proposées pour traiter ces risques : parmi ces approches, certaines sont préventives et d’autres sont plutôt palliatives et gèrent le risque après l'occurrence de ses conséquences; néanmoins, ces approches sont souvent basées sur des initiatives ad-hoc non systémiques. Ainsi, pendant le processus de conception de la base de données géospatiale, l’analyse de risque n’est pas toujours effectuée conformément aux principes d’ingénierie des exigences (Requirements Engineering) ni aux orientations et recommandations des normes et standards ISO. Dans cette thèse, nous émettons l'hypothèse qu’il est possible de définir une nouvelle approche préventive pour l’identification et l’analyse des risques liés à des usages inappropriés de la donnée géospatiale. Nous pensons que l’expertise et la connaissance détenues par les experts (i.e. experts en geoTI), ainsi que par les utilisateurs professionnels de la donnée géospatiale dans le cadre institutionnel de leurs fonctions (i.e. experts du domaine d'application), constituent un élément clé dans l’évaluation des risques liés aux usages inadéquats de ladite donnée, d’où l’importance d’enrichir cette connaissance. Ainsi, nous passons en revue le processus de conception des bases de données géospatiales et proposons une approche collaborative d’analyse des exigences axée sur l’utilisateur. Dans le cadre de cette approche, l’utilisateur expert et professionnel est impliqué dans un processus collaboratif favorisant l’identification a priori des cas d’usages inappropriés. Ensuite, en passant en revue la recherche en analyse de risques, nous proposons une intégration systémique du processus d’analyse de risque au processus de la conception de bases de données géospatiales et ce, via la technique Delphi. Finalement, toujours dans le cadre d’une approche collaborative, un référentiel ontologique de risque est proposé pour enrichir les connaissances sur les risques et pour diffuser cette connaissance aux concepteurs et utilisateurs finaux. L’approche est implantée sous une plateforme web pour mettre en œuvre les concepts et montrer sa faisabilité.Nowadays, the increased availability of geospatial information is a reality that many organizations, and even the general public, are trying to transform to a financial benefit. The reusability of datasets is now a viable alternative that may help organizations to achieve cost savings. The quality of these datasets may vary depending on the usage context. The issue of geospatial data misuse becomes even more important because of the disparity between the different expertises of the geospatial data end-users. Managing the risks of geospatial data misuse has been the subject of several studies over the past fifteen years. In this context, several approaches have been proposed to address these risks, namely preventive approaches and palliative approaches. However, these approaches are often based on ad-hoc initiatives. Thus, during the design process of the geospatial database, risk analysis is not always carried out in accordance neither with the principles/guidelines of requirements engineering nor with the recommendations of ISO standards. In this thesis, we suppose that it is possible to define a preventive approach for the identification and analysis of risks associated to inappropriate use of geospatial data. We believe that the expertise and knowledge held by experts and users of geospatial data are key elements for the assessment of risks of geospatial data misuse of this data. Hence, it becomes important to enrich that knowledge. Thus, we review the geospatial data design process and propose a collaborative and user-centric approach for requirements analysis. Under this approach, the user is involved in a collaborative process that helps provide an a priori identification of inappropriate use of the underlying data. Then, by reviewing research in the domain of risk analysis, we propose to systematically integrate risk analysis – using the Delphi technique – through the design of geospatial databases. Finally, still in the context of a collaborative approach, an ontological risk repository is proposed to enrich the knowledge about the risks of data misuse and to disseminate this knowledge to the design team, developers and end-users. The approach is then implemented using a web platform in order to demonstrate its feasibility and to get the concepts working within a concrete prototype

Human-Centered Approaches in Geovisualization Design: Investigating Multiple Methods Through a Long-Term Case Study
Working with three domain specialists we investigate human-centered approaches to geovisualization following an
ISO13407 taxonomy covering context of use, requirements and early stages of design. Our case study, undertaken over three years, draws attention to repeating trends: that generic approaches fail to elicit adequate requirements for geovis application design; that the use of real data is key to understanding needs and possibilities; that trust and knowledge must be built and developed with collaborators. These processes take time but modified human-centred approaches can be effective. A scenario developed through contextual inquiry but supplemented with domain data and graphics is useful to geovis designers. Wireframe, paper and digital prototypes enable successful communication between specialist and geovis domains when incorporating real and interesting data, prompting exploratory behaviour and eliciting previously unconsidered requirements. Paper prototypes are particularly successful at eliciting suggestions, especially for novel visualization. Enabling specialists to explore their data freely with a digital prototype is as effective as using a structured task protocol and is easier to administer. Autoethnography has potential for framing the design process. We conclude that a common understanding of context of use, domain data and visualization possibilities are essential to successful geovis design and develop as this progresses. HC approaches can make a significant contribution here. However, modified approaches, applied with flexibility, are most promising. We advise early, collaborative engagement with data – through simple, transient visual artefacts supported by data sketches and existing designs – before moving to successively more sophisticated data wireframes and data prototypes
